In all seriousness, both deals are head scratchers to me. Miles Austin now makes more money than Randy Moss and Vernon Davis now makes more money than Antonio Gates. Personally, I'll take Moss and Gates at their current salaries over Austin and Davis at their new salaries all day long regardless of age.

I guess we can chalk it up to being an uncapped year...
Randy Moss's deal was signed a few years ago and was below market if i recall because he wanted to win the Pats.

I thought Gates' deal was a few years ago as well. The NFL has contracts go all over very quickly

Re: Vernon Davis highest paid TE in History?

To be fair on him being a "bust", he was suffering some injury problems, and San Fran was in a TERRIBLE state for a few years after he was drafted, mainly due to the Alex Smith fiasco. He wasn't exactly placed in a situation to excel, considering he's a TE. How often is it "The TE carried the team"?

That said, I don't know if I buy him being the highest paid player at his position.

True enough, but I really can't see Moss making more money than Austin in his next contract. He deserves it, but he probably won't get it, especially if he stays in New England.

I see Moss retiring before he signs another big contract, he might sign a smaller deal, 1-2 years, but his days are getting shorter.

Gates actually got a contract extension over the summer.
5 years, $36.175 million. $20.4 million guaranteed.

He keeps becoming the highest-paid tight end in the NFL. Vernon Davis getting doesn't bother me alone, but to see the money that Vernon Davis makes in relation to the money that Tony Gonzalez, one of the best tight ends in NFL history, has made over his career doesn't sit well with me.
