That would be a happy compromise.

I'm just saying that if a contract is a contract then I should be able to walk when it's fulfilled. We always complain about players who hold out for money while in a contract but in some cases they can complete the contract and still not get to be an unrestricted free agent because of the Franchise tag. what if a guy doesn't want to play there? Or wants that huge guarantee?

I totally agree that it should only be used once per player. It's kind of stupid how the league pays these guys so much money and now the lockout is most likely going to go through.

It's the same in the NBA aswell with guys like LeBron getting 120m a season. It's ridiculous and the players themselves should take pay cuts in the spirit of the game. Oh well, I guess you don't know what you've got until it's gone.

It's all relative my man. Just like any work force, it's supply and demand. Professional athletes (for the most part) have an ultra rare skill set that demands an ultra premium salary. If anyone could do it then they wouldn't make so much. That's why fry cooks (no offense to fry cooks) make minimum wage. Anyone can do their job. More supply than demand.

I agree, but 120 million a season is too much for me. Australian athletes playing Australian sports (mainly AFL - afl.com.au) get around 1 million a season - and that's for the best players in the competition. Aside from that, the skill-set of these 'AFL' players are much more demanding than that of an NFL player.

I know what you're saying in that it's a very demanding sport/business, but there's no doubt that they are well overpaid.

Re: Franchise Tag

Franchise tag is a contract too, it's part of the labor agreement collectively bargained by the union representing the players with the NFL.

I don't really see a problem with paying someone guaranteeing top 5 for their position if it's used over and over. It's very expensive and hurts the team to do so repeatedly as then it's not available to be used on other players. Also the tag pays the player the average of the top 5 players in their position, or 120% of their previous year's salary, whichever is greater. Repeatedly applying it has sufficient financial consequences IMO.
