I have complete confidence that Manning and the other players in the offense are expected to make those reads, and that that's why it takes long for newcomers to learn everything.
A concept is basically another word for a play. If Peyton is given 3 options at the line, they may consist of a Cover 2/Cover 3 beater (with routes adjusting based on the actual coverage), a Man beater, and a running play. Those are 3 different concepts, or plays.

At the line, it's basically like gambling, you play the odds. When the D shows "x" they're in Cover 2 60% of the time. Ok, let's pull up our Cover 2 beater.

Now Manning deserves a TON of credit for what he does, but let's not overblow it either. Every team uses route adjustments. The thing that separates Peyton is that they only run a few basic plays but they all have perfect complements, and he knows when to run them. Peyton and his WRs are always able to run the route the defense isn't prepared to defend.

Yeah I don't mean to overblow it. I'm just saying. When you have a guy like Phil Simms saying "Peyton plays a position I am unfamiliar with", that's pretty incredible, considering Simms was a pretty good QB in his own right. But at the end of the day it still comes down to performance. I don't care what he does or doesn't do as long as he plays well.
