That's how you stop any QB in the league. I've seen it happen to Rodgers too.

All things equal, Brady is still far ahead of #2 Rodgers IMO. Rodgers still misses a few passes here and there. Brady is a quarterback robot.

Tackling was piss poor for a lot of teams. Too many guys trying to blow up someone with their shoulder. Just glad the Bears still how to wrap someone up properly! They were very strong in this regard all game.

i think its the no huddle, NFL teams really arent accustomed to that and i saw a lot of teams running it most of the game and great results when they do use it. The defense are better on shorter prep time this season is just an anomaly, though plenty of defenses did come out strong.

Tackling, or the lack thereof, has always been my biggest pet peeve. But what I read in Sports Illustrated in their NFL preview issue made things a bit clearer. Coaches, notably the late Jim Johnson of the Philadelphia Eagles, taught their players to run through players instead of breaking down and making the tackle. They spotlighted Sheldon Brown's big hit on Reggie Bush a few years back, then back to the present day when Brown decided to break down to tackle Braylon Edwards and got run over. He says if he was still under Johnson, and with the rules more stringent towards leading with your helmet these days, he went for the wrap-up but obviously was unsuccessful.

So some of the poor tackling can be due to teams preaching to blow up guys and create a turnover instead of just getting them down. Still, I think tackling is still pretty weak overall, even with offensive players becoming more and more dynamic. I've always felt if you can take the proper angle and at least slow down the ballcarrier, you should have some help coming even if you by yourself could not get the ballcarrier down.

A discussion on tackling deserves its own thread, in my opinion. It's such a simple and integral part of the game, but it's so often overlooked that the art of the wrap-up tackling is quickly becoming extinct to the point where if we see a good form tackle, it's like a highlight in itself.

I can't count how many times I saw a safety come up and take the wrong angle on the ball carrier and get beat for a big gain. In most cases, the guy didn't even get to attempt a tackle because of the terrible angle.

Re: Week 1 QB Performances

Week 1 Total QB Rating leaders:

1 Ryan Fitzpatrick - 91.2
2 Aaron Rodgers - 91.1
3 Tom Brady - 88.6
4 Matthew Stafford - 87.4
5 Joe Flacco - 79.6
6 Cam Newton - 75.7
7 Rex Grossman - 75.0
8 Drew Brees - 71.6
9 Matt Schaub - 71.0
10 Chad Henne - 70.7
11 Michael Vick - 68.4
12 Alex Smith - 66.2
13 Tony Romo - 62.9
14 Matt Hasselbeck - 62.1
15 Jay Cutler - 60.4
16 Eli Manning - 53.6
17 Philip Rivers - 52.8
18 Kevin Kolb - 44.0
19 Luke McCown - 43.0
20 Josh Freeman - 34.7
21 Kyle Orton - 33.0
22 Bruce Gradkowski - 32.7
23 Sam Bradford - 28.7
24 Matt Ryan - 27.7
25 Andy Dalton - 27.0
26 Jason Campbell - 22.8
27 Tarvaris Jackson - 21.1
28 Donovan McNabb - 20.7
29 Colt McCoy - 17.6
30 Mark Sanchez - 17.6
31 Matt Cassel - 11.2
32 Ben Roethlisberger - 10.8
33 Kerry Collins - 2.3

Seeing Romo at #13 kinda makes me wonder just how useful this new rating system is.

Re: Week 1 QB Performances

It's as stupid as regular QBR. There's no context in the stats.

I bet his fumble and pick late in the game killed his numbers. From what I remember, this formula puts more emphasis on late/important plays than plays earlier in the game.

But I agree, this seems just like the Passer Rating stat where it's really tough to understand what the numbers mean.

But supposedly that's what this new rating is about: taking context into consideration, among other things.

Seems to me like they need to weigh things a bit differently. I mean, a Dallas victory wasn't guaranteed before that Romo fumble, but it would've put them that much closer.
