Seattle trades LB Aaron Curry to Oakland

Seattle trades former #4 overall pick LB Aaron Curry to Oakland for two undisclosed picks, one in 2012 and one in 2013.

The Seattle Times Seahawks blog is reporting, via Chris Mortensen, that it's a 7th round pick in 2012 and a conditional mid-round pick in 2013.

I personally don't like the deal, but understand it. The writing has been on the wall for at least a few weeks now.

CBS Sports notes that his exit highlights the misses of the 2009 draft.

I'm curious to know what Raider fans think of this deal, and how Curry will fit into their plans.

Hmm, I would say that's a minimal risk for the Raiders, but the reward could be huge if they could coax out the potential that made him a first round pick.

I think it's a pretty good trade. We're not giving up much but the potential there is high. Groves is decent at best so we could use another OLB. If all of our former first round pickups play to their potential we could have a real good defense. I'm curious tho. What happened with Curry? I remember his rookie season he was getting all kinds of praise.

He had a few games his rookie year where it looked like he might make an impact, but basically he's been a guy who overruns plays, misses tackles and interceptions, and for the most part just looks overwhelmed by what's going on out there.

Then after he got replaced on the depth chart by a rookie earlier this year he goes and tweats that "they" lost, after a Seahawks loss.

It hasn't come out whether or not there were issues with Pete Carroll, but Carroll is a guy who hasn't hesitated to give guys a shot, as "competition" has been the theme ever since he arrived.

Curry was also drafted the year before Carroll and GM John Schneider took over, so it's pretty clear they weren't too enamored with him, as evidenced by a reworking of Curry's contract before the season started.

I still think Curry can be a solid linebacker, and thought his upside was worth keeping him around, even if he didn't like being a backup. I would have taken him aside and told him that he has to earn his place back, perhaps to try and get him to focus and step his game up. It seems to me that they cut ties a little too soon. Obviously hard to tell not being there.

I think the Raiders will get something out of him. A change of scenery will help, he needs it.

I'm surprised the Lions weren't in on this. They have been going after lots of former busts/bad fits (Rob Sims, LoJack, Carpenter, Corey Williams). They've also traded with Seattle a lot.

This just shows how much of a crapshoot the draft really can be. I remember all of the pundits saying that Curry was the biggest "sure thing" in his draft.
