North Texas was hosting Sunbelt newcomer #18 USF and was an underdog at home in North Texas.

1st half
Both teams didn't do much on their opening possession punting. Next series, Radcliff runs for 19 yards, setting up a 51 yard Floyd to Montgomery TD pass to put USF up on the board 7-0. Smith carried for a few decent gains, to give Hancock time to find Lancaster several times, Lewis scores from the 1 yard line to tie it up. North Texas defense gets a key sack on 3rd down to force a 3 and out. North Texas hands it off to Smith several times in a row to setup a play action pass to Harris 56 yards to give North Texas the lead 14-7 early in the 2nd. USF answers back with a drive of their own, Floyd
finds Wiggins, Thompson, then Price. Radcliff broke several tackles, one of which could negated the 31 yard rush. Floyd finds Montgomery for 17 yards, to setup Radcliff for 2 yd TD. North Texas kept handing the ball off to Smith a few times, then finding Lanchaster and Jones. Lewis gets several nice carries to get inside the 5. Then USF sacks Hancock and NT has to settle for a short FG with about a minute left. Mason gets a big sack on
Floyd that rattles Floyd. Next play, Floyd throws and Wright runs in front the WR and makes the pick with 14 seconds left. Hancock finds Harris for his second TD of the game. Halftime NT 24 USF 14

3rd quarter
North Texas was looking to extend the lead to open the half, but was held to a 3 and out. USF starts with several runs by Radclick and 18 yd run by Floyd, to setup a 3 yard catch by Price to bring USF within 3. North Texas was held to another 3 and out. Hunter then give North Texas another shot by getting a pick, however North Texas goes 3 and out again. North Texas defense rises up and holds USF to a 3 and out.

4th quarter
North Texas's offense has to make a statement to win the game. Smith starts with several carries. Hancock gets a shot with several short throws. Hancock hits Lancaster and Jones to get within FG range. Hancock looks for Harper down the field, but it was almost picked off by USF. Coach saw enough, he gets back to the running game. Smith gets the next 5 carries including one for 8 yards for TD. NT 31 USF 21 with 2:07 left in the game. Busby picks off Floyd with 1:42 left in the game. Hancock takes a couple of
kneel downs to end the game.

Final NT 31 USF 21

NT pulls off the upset and starts off the season 3-0. The defense turned around this game and got 3 picks. Next up for North Texas will be Minnesota.
