Re: AEW Discussion Thread

Was listening to Bryan Alvarez on the radio, and someone said AEW was not getting TV rights money, and he said something like, "yes, they are getting TV rights money. It's not gonna be as much as WWE, but they will be getting paid."

Gee, no kidding. That's like saying I'll pay you to work for me. I won't be paying you 100k per year, but you will get paid. And then you end up making minimum wage. For some reason that annoyed me lol.

Re: AEW Discussion Thread

So why now with a start up wrestling company no less, would Warner want to air wrassling all these years later? They wanted nothing to do with it after WCW so quite curious why they jump back in after all these years.

I mean it would have made more sense to compete with USA on the rights to air RAW and go with a proven company than a start up company. Or at least see if New Japan wanted a better showcase for their shows rather AXS TV.

NJPW, especially without Omega, Young Bucks and Jericho has no US appeal. Not to mention their cement shoes they have attached in ROH.

WCW was dying and TNT doesn't have the money to afford RAW. AEW is the first company since WCW that has legit national appeal to launch.

Hard to be believe a dirt sheet guy couldn’t talk in more than vague generalities.

Re: AEW Discussion Thread

Harder to believe the reports of the TV details were initially reported by a Philadelphia Eagles beat guy.

Also Alvarez is full of crap. He reported that the Revival are 100% going to AEW because they took pictures with 2 AEW fans at a WWE house show like 3/4 months ago.

There are no rights fees for AEW. They are getting 500k an episode (which isnt really that much when it comes to episodic programming) but pretty much all of that is to pay for production. AEW could save money while producing and keep some of it but usually 50-70% goes back to the network.

I think the play here is to use TNT to get decent ratings and try to leverage that into a better deal with TNT next year or another network.

Because there are different people in charge who have different feelings on programming than the people who were there in a different time period who made a different choice?

tl;dr - different people make different decisions

If I remember correctly, the same people that didn't want WCW was in charge of the AOL/Time Warner merger that lost millions of dollars.
