Bowling Green Scores 21 Fourth Quarter Points to Avoid Upset at Yale

NEW HAVEN, CT - The Yale Bulldogs (0-9) looked poised to perhaps pick up their first win of the season after quarterback Jake McNamara found a wide open Thomas Moore in the end zone to tie the game at 17 apiece near the end of the third quarter, but Bowling Green (2-7) had other ideas.

The Falcons, who only had one win on the season coming in to today's game, reeled off 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, more than they had scored in the first three quarters of the game combined, to pull away and beat Yale by a fairly lopsided margin, 38-17.

The Bulldogs were able to stay in contention largely because of turnovers. The Falcons fumbled the football six times in the rainy conditions, and lost it four times. Yale, in contrast, only turned the football over once.

However, Yale's single turnover proved fatal as it was a 34-yard pick six by Bowling Green sophomore linebacker Bryan Nelson that turned a 24-17 game into a 31-17 Falcons lead with just five minutes remaining, essentially putting the game out of reach.

Sean McFadden was responsible for all four of Bowling Green's turnovers in one way or the other. The junior linebacker had the game of his life, recording 11 tackles, five forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. He single handily kept the Bulldogs in the game through three quarters, but he couldn't replicate the magic in the game's final 15 minutes.

Quarterback Jeff McNamara threw for 241 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception for Yale. Tyson Brewer was his leading receiver with eight catches and 89 yards receiving. Thomas Moore found the most success he's had running the football all season with a season-high 48 yards on just seven carries. In addition, he caught seven passes for 61 yards and caught both of Yale's touchdowns today.

Also of note, senior tight end Lance Pressley, who has been Yale's top pass catcher this season, sustained a broken tailbone in the first quarter that will see him sidelined for the rest of the year, and the rest of his career.

"Losing Lance [Pressley] is a big blow for us," explained Yale quarterback Jeff McNamara. "He's always a dependable talent out there with his size and the skill he's able to work with at that size. But I think some other guys did a good job stepping up in his absence today, so I hope we can keep on doing that in the final few games this season."

Bowling Green quarterback Taurean Jackson had a great game. The sophomore threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns, and he rushed for another 38 yards and a touchdown on just five carries. Brett Richard caught seven passes for 112 yards and a touchdown to lead the high-flying Falcons in receiving. Ryan Jones caught Jackson's other touchdown pass and recorded six receptions for 87 yards.

Yale will host Central Michigan next week before traveling to Boston, MA for their big annual rivalry game with the Harvard Crimson on November 11th.

Re: Yale Bulldogs (NCAA Football 07)

That statline by McFadden is ridiculous - five forced fumbles and two recoveries? As I said before, you're really making progress throughout this season and it seems pretty likely you'll get that elusive win against Harvard to avoid the 0-fer. Would've been something if you got it earlier against BGSU though!

Yeah, I just checked and I think 5 forced fumbles is an NCAA record, haha. Fumbles can unfortunately get a little out of control in this game, especially those forced by impact players. One of my main gripes with this game (along with jump the snap).

We really should be able to beat Harvard. We are better than them across the board, and we're going to put all our eggs into that basket. If we can beat them, this season will go down as a success. It's not like I expected to win any of our other games, anyways. But win that one and it's as good as I could've hoped for. Lose against Harvard, on the other hand.....and this season was an unmitigated disaster!

Murphy Tosses Five Touchdowns as Central Michigan Blows Out Yale 45-22

NEW HAVEN, CT - Central Michigan (4-5) easily handled Yale (0-10) this afternoon in New Haven 45-22. Sophomore quarterback Zach Murphy threw for 237 yards and five touchdowns for the Chippewas as they easily rolled to their fourth victory of the season. Central Michigan led 31-7 at halftime and put the game on cruise control in the second half.

Matt Williams rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown for Central Michigan. Gavin McNeil led the Chippewas in receiving with 75 yards and a touchdown with three receptions. Craig Wright caught two touchdowns and five passes overall for 66 yards. Kyle Cook (3 Rec, 37 Yds, TD) and Brandon Lane (2 Rec, 29 Yds, TD) also caught touchdown passes.

Yale senior quarterback Jeff McNamara had a nice outing, throwing for 264 yards and two touchdowns on Senior Day. He also ran for another touchdown on a quarterback sneak. Fellow senior Trey Duckett caught both of McNamara's touchdown passes and recorded seven receptions and 138 yards, both career-highs.

Overall, Central Michigan outgained Yale 448-283 and was especially dominant on the ground, where they outgained Yale 204-19.

Yale's 22 points scored today is the best the team has managed all season, breaking the prior high of 21 against Northern Illinois two weeks ago. Yale has reached the 17-point mark in their past three games, something they only managed once in their first seven games of the season.

Yale travels to Boston next week to take on the Harvard Crimson in the two teams' annual rivalry game. Next week's game against the Crimson will be Yale's best chance to win a game this season. The Bulldogs will close out the season at Navy the following week.

Yale Dominates Harvard 45-14 for First Win of 2006

BOSTON, MA - Yale (1-10) picked up their first win of the season in dominating fashion as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 45-0 lead and cruised the rest of the way to defeat Harvard 45-14 this afternoon in Boston in the two teams' annual rivalry game.

Senior quarterback Jeff McNamara threw for 222 yards and four touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Trey Duckett caught three of his touchdowns and caught four passes overall for 96 yards. Tyson Brewer recorded four catches for 53 yards and Corey Cross caught McNamara's other touchdown pass, though he had just one catch on the day.

Thomas Moore ran for triple digit yardage for the first time all season as the Yale offensive line opened some holes for him. The junior ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.

On an unfortunate note, Trey Duckett injured his quad and is expected to be out of action for at least a few weeks, meaning the senior will be unavailable for next week's season finale at the Naval Academy.

"You hate to see it, really," said Yale head coach Lee Williamson, when asked about Duckett's injury. "Really sucks to have your career end like that, so unexpectedly."

Williamson was very upbeat about his team's performance today, though. "I thought we played as well as I could have hoped for," he said. "We really throttled them when our first-unit was in there. When we started putting in the second- and third-units, we got really sloppy and out offensive attack really fell apart, but that's kind of to be expected. We really jumped on their throats with a methodical opening drive that ended in a touchdown. Then our defense forced a three-and-out, and the offense followed up with another quick touchdown. We had all the momentum after that and rolled."

Today's win is Williamson's first as head coach of the Yale Bulldogs. He's still searching for his first win against an FBS opponent, though.

Yale linebacker Chad Roberts also had himself a heck of a game, recording 10 tackles, including seven tackles for loss, four sacks, and two forced fumbles. All the more impressive, he did all this while resting for most of the second half.

The Bulldogs failed to score after their opening drive of the second half. The second-string offensive line was unable to open up rushing lanes against Harvard's defensive front and backup quarterback Zac Stephens didn't have the accuracy to open up the passing game at all.

Harvard broke the shutout with a couple big fluke plays in the third quarter, but were largely unable to get anything going on offense.

With the Bulldogs clearly overmatched in every other game this season against FBS competition, the success of the 2006 season was really only going to be based on the Yale-Harvard rivalry game. Using that metric, the 2006 season is surely a rousing success.

Yale will travel to Annapolis, MD to take on Navy next Saturday to close out the season. The Midshipmen have been impressive this year and sport a 7-3 record, so it will be a tough one for the Bulldogs.
