Madden Metareview

Now that Madden 08 has been out for nearly a week, it’s time to check out some of the reviews that have been released on the Internet and beyond! By the looks of the aggregate scores, Madden has definitely rebounded this year in terms of review scores. Of course on the MaddenMania Forums Madden 08 has been the subject of plenty of outrage and admiration, as usual. With that said let’s take a look at some of the scores.

  • GameDaily (90/100): “Despite these sophisticated features, the game’s responsive, intuitive control stands out the most. Players simply move where you want them to without getting stuck in long-winded animations or running out of bounds against your will. Want to throw a 60-yard bomb while on the run? Want to switch to Chris Chambers and go up and get it? It’s finally possible. Madden 08’s controls just feel right from the very first kickoff, and they’re a big reason this Madden will go down as the best yet.”
  • 1UP (90/100): “From the terrible secondary play to the errant line blocking, we’ve often wondered why Madden’s group of NFLers even wear helmets — it’s not like they got much to protect up there. But just like our innovation wish, you’ll find a much smarter brand of football in 08: Quarterbacks now scramble when no one is open, wideouts continue to make blocks 30 yards downfield, and defensive backs rarely fall for the deep ball. Some might even say that pass defense is a tad too stingy this season, but we’d rather have it be challenging than face another Madden secondary that sports more holes than Swiss cheese.”
  • Game Informer (80/100): “If all this year’s Madden did was restore its feature set, then that alone would hardly be cause for hope. However, by improving the gameplay, it makes it so I’m much more apt to actually play more than one season before putting my controller down. This series isn’t out of the woods just yet, but this year lets it be known that Madden’s best days aren’t behind it.”

By the way, those are the scores for the XBOX 360 version of Madden 08. Here are some reviews of the PS3 version:

  • IGN (77/100): “Madden NFL 08 on PS3 is not a great game. It is a shadow of its cousin on 360. Though the feature set is identical, the drop to an unstable 30fps hurts considerably. The visuals and the gameplay suffer. If you are a real Madden nut and think you can fight through the framerate issues, Madden is an overall good game. It just doesn’t run very well. If you only own a PS3 and live for Sundays, then there really is no other choice than to give Madden 08 a shot.”
  • Gamespot (85/100): “In Madden NFL 08 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, EA Tiburon has put together the most complete version of Madden seen on either console to date. The gameplay is tight, practically every old feature that had been previously missing is back in some form or another, and new additions have been made that significantly change how you play the game–for the better.”

And now for something that is on the low end of the review score spectrum…

  • G4 TV (60/100): “When a franchise is racking in as much money as Madden, they should at the very least be able to give us what we expect. They’ve finally done that, now with better animation and more player controls they seem to be going in the right directions. Maybe next year will bring us that much closer to having a Madden game like never before. It’s still a good game, slightly above average, but not as great as it should be.”
