Boston Homers Overpower Struggling Oakland

Photobucket
Kouzmanoff scored the A's only run on the A's first homerun of the year.

Oakland, Ca - For the 3rd game in a row the Oakland Athletics were undone by a lackluster offensive showing. Boston won tonights game by a score of 9-1 blasting 4 homeruns on their way. Starting pitcher R. Hill successfully kept Oakland bats at bay giving up only one run on the solo shot by Kevin Kouzmanoff. Oakland Starter Dallas Braden was shaky all game giving up 5 runs on 3 homers and 7 hits, striking out 5. Reliever Brad Ziegler would follow by giving up 4 runs in 2.2 innings pitched. Boston flamethrowing reliever Daniel Bard blew by Oakland hitters striking out 5 in 2.1 innings pitched. This is the 3rd game in row where the A's have yet to gain a lead on their opponent. Oakland hopes to avoid the sweep tomorrow against Boston's heavy hitters. Top prospect Chris Carter picked up his first career base hit that would have also been his first career RBI, but Suzuki was gunned out at the plate by Jose Reyes in the bottom of the 3rd. Newly acquired player Mat Gamel began his Oakland career with a base hit in the 2nd inning.

Oakland Avoid Sweep, Get to Matsuzaka Early

Photobucket
Brett Anderson went 6.1 innings while giving up only 2 runs and striking out 7

Oakland, Ca - The Oakland Athletics avoid the series sweep and pick up a victory in the last game of this four game series. The A's pitching was the hero in this game, holding the powerful Boston offense to 2 runs on a homeRun by David Ortiz. Excluding the pitch sent out by Ortiz, Anderson pitched very well and dominated Red Sox hitters to the tune of 7 strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Catcher Landon Powell was asked after the game what he thought of Anderson's performance, "Anytime Anderson is on the hill it gives us a chance to win, he's a bulldog out there and we're lucky he's on our side of the diamond. Electric slider". Jeremey Hermida continued to produce for Oakland notching a team leading 3rd RBI in the 1st inning, followed by a Daric Barton RBI double. Andrew Bailey ran into a jam in the 9th while attempting to close the game out, but was bailed out by a 4-6-3 double play.

Series Review

General Manager's Comments

Photobucket
"During the Boston series one thing became apparent to me, we need to find ways to get our guys home. We left way to many guys in scoring position against Boston, if we would have been able to drive those guys home, maybe our record would look alittle better. We also need to find a way to get guys in scoring position in front of our bigger bats. Rajai is doing an excellent job stealing bases so far, trying to make something out of nothing, Sweeney is also seeing the ball pretty well, but they seem to not be transitioning into runs. We also need to find a way to get Carter started, I know it's early in the season, but we have plenty of guys on the bench that can effectively drive in runs at the DH position if Carter can't execute. Our pitching was so-so during the series and nothing really to write home about, the Boston bats killed us with the Longball, so we really need to cut that down if we look to compete against the indians. It seemed like every swing a boston player was sending one into the stratusphere. Overall, i'm not worried about our team, i think we have the players that can play a fast paced, small ball like game. We'll see if today was a fluke when we start our series against Cleavland.

Oakland Start Series with Win

Photobucket
Andrew Bailey closed out his 2nd game in a row.

Oakland, Ca - Oakland was the scene of a dynamite pitching duel between Oakland's randy wells, and the Indians Jeanmar Gomez. The decision would go in Wells favor who confused Indians players with a combination of offspeed and breaking pitches. Catcher Kurt Suzuki stated "He had his stuff going today, he looked like he could pitch another game when he came out." Not to be outdone, Jeanmar Gomez gave up 2 Earned runs in 7.1 innings pitched and struck out 4 without walking a batter. Oakland A's CF Rajai Davis commented on Jeanmars poise on the hill, "He looked determined to get every batter out, he just made a few mistake pitches that we took advantage of." The Oakland Offense didn't really light up the world, but they did amass 11 hits on their way to this victory. Rajai Davis and Kurt Suzuki both singled in runs while Craig Monroe went 3-3 on the day. Andrew Bailey would solidify a victory in the 9th earning his 2nd save of the year.

Cahill Shines in Oakland Victory

Photobucket
Cahill fanned 7 batters on his way to his first victory of 2011

Oakland, Ca - Make it three in row! Oakland seems to have found it's stride as they collected their 3rd straight win today in the 2nd game of this 3 game series. 30,000 plus people watched Trevor Cahill mow down the Indians looking in mid season form. Indiands starter Mitch Talbot was knocked around early giving up 3 runs in the 2nd inning. He would eventually settle down and pitch 4 more innings intil he was replaced by submarine throwing reliever Joe Smith. Mark Ellis was the hero today driving in 2 runs on a 2nd inning single. Which was followed by a RBI single by Daric Barton who would tally 2 RBI on the day. Daric Barton was asked for comments after the game, "I just saw a pitch that i could handle and drove it the other way, thankfully we had some guys on when Talbot threw the pitch". Oakland Will be going for the series sweep tomorrow evening.

Hot Bats lead to Sweep of Cleveland

Photobucket
Ellis had a nice day at the plate knocking in 4 runs.

Oakland, Ca - The Green and Gold had their brooms out today as the Oakland Athletics completed the 3 game sweep of the struggling Cleveland Indians. Gio Gonzalez had his his good stuff going, allowing 2 runs in 6 and a 3rd innnings pitched, while fanning 8. "He defiantly was in command", was all we could get out of catcher Kurt Suzuki before he traveled back into the team clubhouse after the game. Mark Ellis led the charge on offense, supplying 4 earned runs. Oakland Rookie Chris Carter would drive in his first Major League RBI on a double in the 7th inning. Both Daric Barton and Jeremey Hermida plated runs to continue their RBI pace. Next Oakland will be traveling to our neighbors up north to start a 3 game series against toronto before retuning to face the Indians in Cleveland.

General Manager's Comments

"Well, what can i say? what kind of General Manager complains after a sweep? This general manager, things felt into place against the Indians, but there is still room to improve. The Rotation was amazing this series, they went out there and simply overpowered the Indian hitters, which was not what i was expecting. It was defiantly a pleasant suprise to see Sogard produce off the bench, if he continues to play well off the bench i see no reason why Geren shouldn't reward him with some extra playing time. Overall i'm happy with how the series went against the Indians, only thing now is to go into Toronto and play some more solid baseball.
