The "Golden Anniversary" second coming of the Big Red Machine

There was more excitement in this year's parade than in the past. In the past three years the Reds have made the post-season twice. Although sandwich between those two appearances they were in the cellar the other year.

Votto is back from his injury from last year and looks to be back into his old self. Choo is the most exciting player on the team, only to if he can produce like he did last year the Reds will have even a more potent offense at the lead-off spot.

While in Spring Training the three big new floating around was if Phillips and Cozart would be healthy at the start of the season, If Chapman was really going to be a starter, and if the fastest man in baseball was going to be in the majors this year.

As Opening Day kicked off we got all those answers. Phillips would be a game time decision, and a week prior to the end of Spring break Chapman was moved back to closer and Hamilton was sent to Triple A.

Maybe Phillips wasn't ready as he failed to turn a double ball in the first inning that resulted in an error, and got another error just five batters later in the second inning. He didn't do anything at the plate as well.

Quote:
He is our starter. I don't care if he is under 100 percent, maybe I should hold him out for the opener but since (Phillips) missed all of Spring Training I needed him to get his feel back. Cueto and the rest of the team helped to recover from those two mistakes.
Said Baker after the game. He was then asked about they other side as well.
Quote:
Well it's not good that our 2, 4, and 5 hitters were 0-11 out there. Choo did what he needed at the lead-off spot, and good thing our bottom of the lineup did some work. We had some miscue's, but it's opening day and we are trying to get all the kinks out. Still the pitching staff was outstanding even if Cueto did only get 3 strikeouts.
While it was a low scoring game the game looked like it could go into a slugfest all the way through. Choo tried for a hit-and-run, but Phillips hit a laser straight to second which was easily play for the second baseman to catch it in the air for a double play. Also a blotch play that would of kept runners on the corner as Pujols was pulled off the bag, resulted in a tag out between third and home. Also a throw from center tagged out a runner to cost the Reds another run.

On the other side Los Angeles looked to have 3 homeruns, but Bruce got back on one to make the catch at the wall (didn't have to jump), and the other two were clear homeruns just ran foul. Still the Reds will take the win esecially when Angeles big three was only 2-12 in the game.

(Yes I know I have the box scores for the wrong side, but didn't want to change it all over. Also if you don't like or want me to add anything just let me know!)

It was a cold day with only 44 degrees out, and it seemed to be a problem for the pitchers. In the first as Pujols was at his first appearance a fan was heckling him saying, “Overrated!” While Latos was trying to overcome the cold he would throw a meat pitch in which he would go on cruise control around the bases as he hit it to left field.

In the bottom of the first Phillips was already over the rust of the first game as he crushed a ball to the game in which the next at bat Votto came up and was only a few feet short of hitting a homerun, but would still tie up the game as Phillips would score.

Second inning wouldn't get any better for Latos as a wild pitch would allow the runner to get in scoring position and then would grab the lead from a sac fly. While the Reds would tie it up in the bottom of the third after two doubles by Phillips and Votto, Matt Latos finally started to get comfortable as he retired eight straight batters with six of them being strikeouts.

Two innings for the Reds would give them a comfortable lead. Going into the ninth there wasn't a save situation, but Baker would bring in Broxton to get him some playing time since Chapman took his closer spot. He seemed okay as the first batter would pop up to get an easy out. Not so fast though as the Angels woke up as they would ring four runs from four hits. He would pick up another out before Chapman would come in to get his second save in his second game as he pitched to one batter and struck him out to give him three strikeouts in just 1.1 innings of work.

Tomorrow Homer Bailey would get the nod to take on Tommy Hanson as the Reds go for the sweep on their first try.

Reds bats weren't lively at all today, but neither were the Angels. While the Reds finally didn't have an error, while picking up 4 in the first two games, this game seemed destine to go to the pitcher who made the first mistake.

That would come for the Reds in the sixth inning as Bailey seemed to forget who he was pitching too as Trout was in a 1-2 count, but the pitch count was up to eight already. Bailey would try to see to hit a high inside fastball, but it would hit dead center in which Trout took deep. It looked as if the sweep would be over, but the Reds next inning would get production from their power hitters.

First Votto would work count to 2-2, again the pitch count was high to around almost double digits, but the next ball would give Votto the base since he was hit. That would be the dagger as Bruce on a 2-1 count would hit is second homerun in consecutive games, and that would be all that was needed for the win.

Bailey wouldn't get the win as he was yanked early, but the next scary moment came as with two outs and Chapman came in. He seemed to look a little tired for being in for the third straight game (in four days, and only 1.2 innings pitched) as he would walk the first batter, falling behind 2-0 to the second batter before finally getting him to pop out.

Re: The "Golden Anniversary" second coming of the Big Red Machine

Series Recap with some Tidbits

While three games isn't the end of the world, or large enough to get excited about there are some questions however rising through the fans of Cincinnati. Before we get to that lets break down the last series and see what is up ahead for the Big Red Machine.

First the Reds are sitting in first place with the sweep. Problem is the are tied with two other teams:

1. Cardinals 3-0
2. Brewers 3-0
3. Reds 3-0
4. Pirates 2-1
5. Cubs 1-2

STATS WISE: We our fourth in runs scored with 14 which is four off the leader (shocking the Pirates lead with 18). Even after the meltdown in game two we have given up the second fewest runs with 8 while the Brewers lead with just 6. Still we have the best average for our division with a .300 average but what is shocking is that the Brewers and us are tied with ERA at 1.67.

LAST SERIES: Who would of guess that Andrew Romine (.444 BA, 2 RBI's) would be more of a threat than Pujols, Trout, and Hamilton (all are .231, 5 total RBI's with 3 of them from homeruns). Or that Iannetta would be hitless in 9 at bats on the year. Still Reds had .100 points higher in batting average than them as a team.

As for us this is where fans are starting to get excited about hopefully a call up soon. No one question Votto's heath this year as he is off to a .600 average, 2 HR's and 6 RBI's. What isn't or is shocking, dpending on how you look at it, is Bruce's start as well. Shocking that he went 0-4 in the first game and despite hitting behind Votto he is nipping at his heals with a .455 average (second best on team) with also 2 HR's and 6 RBI's. Again this is suppose to be a breakout year and he is showing that in the first 3 games.

Some problems is that Shin-Soo Choo who started off the year with two hits has been hitless in the past two games. Chris Heisey (0-7) and Hanigan (1-8) are all off to a slow year. Yes that is a big 3-27. While there isn't too much concern about Choo right now, but with the injury to Ludwick fans are growing with excitement now that Billy Hamilton might be called up (we also haven't stole a base yet). As of now all is mum of whether he will, and he is still currently in Triple A. Also people are wondering if someone else is going to hit a homerun this year other than Bruce or Votto. No one has even gotten close. Choo would be the closest and he was at least 3 feet just to get to the warning track. Next is that the Red's have only drawn 3 walks in the series. Two of them were from getting hit by a pitch, while the last one was an intentional walk. Still despite the low walks the Reds have only struck out 8 times, with 3 in the last two games.

UPCOMING SERIES: Up next is Washington Nationals who are 0-3 right now and sitting dead last in the NL East. First game up is a curious game as Bronson Arroyo, who now dropped to fourth starter, will face off against Dan Haren. Next game will bring in the fifth starters for the team with Mike Leake vs Ross Detwiler. Although everyone is super stoked about the finale as it pits #1 starters Johnny Cueto (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 K's) vs. Stephen Strasburg (0-0, 4.76 ERA, 4 K's, 2 BB's), The series is the second straight home series for the Reds.

Thanks Red. I do like your action shots. Trying to figure out if I can upload the video's I save so I can put some in as well. Well the Reds are rich in history so why not be them especially if they are exciting now (although still don't care for our manager). Thinking of adding some other stuff but just trying to get a following first.

Might start over and try to do a 30 man team so I can at least have the power to start "real" rosters, but tried last night and couldn't seem to do it. Either way will probably still keep posting in this thread.

EDIT: Did start a new one. Hopefully there will be trading, since I think I did set it up so we shall see. So I will just continue to post in here. We will say the previous three games was just ST. I went through the teams and adjusted most of there lineups on opening day so we shall see how everything plays out, but as of now the opening and second day rosters in real life are the same as in the game (finished third game up before the games were played.)
