Arizona jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to an RBI single from A.J. Pollock. The Pirates got that back in the bottom half thanks to a Josh Bell RBI groundout following an error on a dropped fly ball by David Peralta in left field. Adam Frazier hit a solo home run to right off of Taijuan Walker in the fourth, and the Pirates added two big insurance runs in the seventh as reliever Yoshi Hirano allowed both inherited runners to score.
David Peralta would add an RBI double in the top of the eighth to pull the DBacks back to within two, but reliever George Kontos was able to get Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb to both fly out to end the threat. Felipe Rivero then worked the ninth to pick up his 18th save.
Trevor Williams stifled the DBacks bats on a rainy Saturday afternoon at P&C Park as the Prates scored three first inning runs and won 3-1. Williams (5-4) went 8 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on five hits. He struck out two and walked one.
The Pirates got to Zack Greinke in the first inning. Adam Frazier lined an RBI single and Josh Bell followed him with a two-run home run to right.
Arizona's lone run came on an absolute moon shot from A.J. Pollock in the ninth. He hit a ball 455 feet deep into the left field seats. Zack Greinke (8-2) lost for just the second time in 2018. He allowed three runs on 10 hits in seven innings of work. He struck out seven and walked one. It was the second straight start that he has allowed 10 hits.
The Diamondbacks salvaged the finale 5-1 over the Pirates behind a strong pitching performance from Patrick Corbin. He tossed eight innings, allowing one run on just three hits on just 78 pitches. He struck out six and walked none. The DBacks grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second as Ildemaro Vargas hit a two run home run to right off of Ivan Nova. It was the first home run of his career. A Paul Goldschmidt RBI double and Steven Souza Jr RBI single added two more runs in the third.
Steve Souza Jr returned to the lineup on Sunday and went 3 for 4 with a double and RBI. Tyler Thornburg made his Diamondback debut on Sunday afternoon, pitching the ninth inning in a non-save situation.
Arizona (47-30) is now (3-3) on the road trip as they head to Miami to conclude the trip with four games against the lowly Marlins (28-50).
Those Pirates uniforms are just beautiful.
