UNC Greensboro (4-5) vs. Fordham (7-2)
Rose Hill Gymnasium
Bronx, NY
December 22nd, 2007

Esmond Clarke's dominant performance led the Fordham Rams (7-2) to an 86-77 victory over the UNC Greensboro Spartans (4-5) on Saturday.

Clarke led all scorers with 24 points on an impressive 12-of-13 shooting, a key contribution in helping Fordham improve on their strong start to this season. Jakob Jacobsen and DeAnthony Taybron contributed 13 points apiece, with Taybron also leading in assists with seven and recording six steals and five rebounds.

The Spartans saw a strong performance from Kyle Hines, who netted 18 points on just 11 shot attempts, closely followed by Mikko Koivisto and Kendall Toney, who added 15 and 13 points respectively.

Fordham started strong, outscoring UNC Greensboro 49-39 in the first half. The Spartans fought back in the second half but fell short as the Rams managed to build a lead in the closing minutes to pull away for the nine-point win.

Both teams put up similar shooting numbers, with the Spartans going 31-for-55 from the field and the Rams making 37-of-58 attempts. However, the difference-maker was Fordham's ability to take care of the ball, committing just six turnovers to UNC Greensboro's 12.

The Rams had a strong start shooting the basketball as they made their first 12 field goal attempts to start the game.

Next, the Spartans will look to get back on track next Saturday at UNC Wilmington.

January 2nd, 2008

The Central Arkansas Bears (5-4) snatched a road win against the UNC Greensboro Spartans (4-7) in a tight contest on Wednesday evening, winning 76-72.

For the Spartans, it was their fourth consecutive loss after starting the season 4-3.

Kirk Keeler was the star of the game for the Bears, scoring a game-high 26 points on an impressive 12-for-16 shooting. Keeler also contributed three steals to the Bears' defensive efforts. Wil Gooding added 13 points, and Tracy Defares notched a double-figure tally with 10 points while also leading the team in rebounds with nine.

Damany Woodward's scoring was limited to 6 points, but he made a significant contribution in terms of playmaking, dishing out nine assists, the highest in the game. In total, the Bears totaled 22 assists while UNCG had just 10.

For the Spartans, Kyle Hines put up a valiant effort with a team-high 22 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to secure the win. Kendall Toney contributed 17 points, and Kevin Oleksiak added 11, but the rest of the team struggled to add to the tally.

Georgia Southern (8-5) vs. UNC Greensboro (5-7)
Fleming Gymnasium
Greensboro, NC
January 5th, 2008

The UNC Greensboro Spartans (5-7, 2-1) edged out the Georgia Southern Eagles (8-5, 2-2) in a tense 78-73 home victory tonight, ending their four-game skid that started back on December 15th.

The Spartans were led by a remarkable performance from Kyle Hines who shot 12-19 from the field to finish with 26 points. He also contributed 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Dwayne Johnson added 14 points on 6-12 shooting, and Kevin Oleksiak hit 2 three-pointers to finish with 13 points.

On the other side, Carson Rivers had a solid game for Georgia Southern with 15 points and 4 assists, but it wasn't enough to outdo the Spartans. Ted Dancy added 11 points and 6 assists, and Jerrold Fraser had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Spartans took a slim lead in the first half, 33-32. The game came down to the final seconds and Mikko Koivisto hit all six of his free throw attempts in the final minute to keep the Eagles at bay. Koivisto shot a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line and ended with 15 points.

Georgia Southern struggled from beyond the arc, making just one of their 15 attempts. UNC Greensboro wasn't much better, making just four of their 13 attempts. The Spartans had a big advantage from the free throw line, where they made 18 of 23 attempts. Georgia Southern, in comparison, made just six of their 11 attempts from the charity stripe.

UNC Greensboro will look to keep up their momentum on Monday night when they host The Citadel.

The Citadel (3-8) vs. UNC Greensboro (5-8)
Fleming Gymnasium
Greensboro, NC
January 7th, 2008

The Citadel Bulldogs picked up their first conference victory of the season Monday, dominating the UNC Greensboro Spartans 84-65. The victory came as a respite for The Citadel (3-8, 1-4) amidst a tough season, while it served as yet another blow to UNC Greensboro (5-8, 2-2), marking their fifth loss in six games.

The Bulldogs established control early on, ending the first half with a lead of 40-27. UNC Greensboro cut the lead to single digits a couple times in the second half, but the Bulldogs always had a response and ended up outscoring the Spartans in the second half in the end to win by a commanding 19-point margin.

Happy Clement was a standout for The Citadel, leading the team with 21 points. Clement made 8 of 13 shots from the field, including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. Parker Henson contributed 13 points, while Ivan Shimonovic came off the bench to chip in 10 points.

The Bulldogs also exhibited a strong team performance with a collective total of 36 rebounds, 25 assists, and 9 steals. Their bench players proved instrumental in the victory, contributing 27 points.

UNC Greensboro had a rough shooting night, with the team's leading scorer, Kyle Hines, shooting just under 50%. Hines finished with 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for a double-double, but it wasn't enough to make up for the Spartans' overall struggle. The starters were particularly off their game, combining for just 41 points.

Next, the Spartans will look to rebound against Chattanooga on the road on Thursday evening.

UNC Greensboro (5-9) vs. Chattanooga (8-6)
McKenzie Arena
Chattanooga, TN
January 10th, 2008

The Chattanooga Mocs cemented their place at the top of the Southern Conference standings Thursday with a commanding 86-67 victory over the struggling UNC Greensboro Spartans.

The Spartans (5-9, 2-3), who have now lost six of their last seven games, had a challenging night, with a shooting performance of just 35% from the field, including 10-of-31 from three-point territory. Kendall Toney and Landon Clement led the Spartan scoring with 13 and 14 points respectively, while Kyle Hines added 12 points and 5 rebounds.

Despite a robust first half from the Spartans, where they scored 38 points, the Mocs (8-6, 4-2) held the lead with 44 points and then continued to outpace Greensboro in the second half, where they really pulled away. Chattanooga showcased their offensive prowess, going 51% from the field and 40% from beyond the three-point arc.

The Mocs were led by Galen Downey who turned in a strong performance with a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. as the Spartans simply couldn't handle his 6'11", 250 lb. frame down loaw. Julio Carlisle and Lance Webb contributed 13 and 12 points, as well. All five Mocs' starters scored in double-figures.

The Spartans will look to bounce back on Saturday when they travel to Boone, NC to take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers in what should be another tough matchup.
