#1 West Virginia (17-0) vs. Syracuse (10-6)
Carrier Dome
Syracuse, NY
January 14th, 2030

No. 1 West Virginia (17-0, 4-0) cruised to yet another victory this Monday evening as they comfortably defeated Syracuse (10-6, 1-3) at the Carrier Dome 86-69.

West Virginia used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Orange, with Fred Joiner leading the way with 18 points, five assists, and three steals. O.J. Palmer recovered from a rough start to the game to record 16 points, five rebounds, and a career-high six blocks while Nile Stevenson added 14 points, five rebounds, and two blocks. Predgrag Gabler also scored 13 points while sixth man Armondo Whelchel recorded 15 points, six rebounds, and three steals.

The Mountaineers were vicious tonight when it came to protecting the rim as they racked up a season-high 11 blocks in the 17-point victory. The Mountaineers also shot 32/58 (55%) from the floor and 7/14 (50%) from three-point land.

Junior forward Wil Lawson led the Orange with 12 points and seven rebounds. Ajou Byrd also scored 12 points and grabbed three rebounds while Tony Sorenson added 11 points and three rebounds.

West Virginia will host Marquette on Saturday in their next game. The Golden Eagles are only 4-10 at the moment as they have had a rude awakening in this year of rebuilding, rather than reloading, after losing a lot of talent to graduation this past offseason.

Marquette (4-12) vs. #1 West Virginia (18-0)
WVU Coliseum
Morgantown, WV
January 19th, 2030

No. 1 West Virginia (18-0, 5-0) has struggled with Marquette (4-12, 1-4) since joining the Big East, but this year the Golden Eagles are undergoing one of their worst seasons in recent history. Tonight, it showed as West Virginia wiped the floor with them 84-52.

The Mountaineers racked up a 21-4 assist-to-turnover ratio this evening and outrebounded Marquette 36-23. The Mountaineers also shot 34/65 (52%) from the floor and 8/16 (50%) from three-point range.

Nile Stevenson found himself in foul trouble for much of the night and was only able to log 20 minutes, but in those 20 minutes he was spectacular as he shot 8/10 from the field and tallied 18 points and eight rebounds. Fred Joiner also played very well as he added 14 points, five rebounds, and six assists. Happy Olson also delivered a surprise from deep on the bench as he shot 6/6 from the field and scored a career-high 12 points to go along with three rebounds.

Sophomore guard Lamar Jensen led Marquette in scoring with 14 points and three rebounds. Freshman forward Allen Sockwell was the only other double-figure scorer with 10 points.

West Virginia will face their toughest test of the season on Monday as they will host No. 7 Louisville, who is also rolling through Big East Conference play so far this season.

#4 Louisville (19-2) vs. #1 West Virginia (19-0)
WVU Coliseum
Morgantown, WV
January 21st, 2029

No. 1 West Virginia (19-0, 6-0) handed No. 4 Louisville (19-2, 5-1) its first conference loss of the season this evening in Morgantown as the top two teams in the Big East Conference and two of the top four teams in the nation clashed on a Monday night with the Mountaineers prevailing 85-78.

The two teams battled hard all night, but WVU was able to turn its five-point halftime lead into a 10-point lead early in the second half. However, the Cardinals were resilient and bounced back to tie the game at 66 apiece with 7:30 remaining. Mamadou Stapley hit a three-pointer with 4:15 remaining to give the Cardinals a 72-69 advantage, their first lead since early in the game. The Mountaineers would not be deterred, however, as WVU's Fred Joiner hit a three of his own on the ensuing possession to tie the game once again at 72 apiece.

Louisville would find itself ahead again with 1:38 remaining as Mike Packevicius hit a turn-around J from the key to give Louisville a 76-75 lead. The Mountaineers once again knew where their bread was buttered as Nile Stevenson got the nod on the Mountaineers' next possession and hit a shot from the post with 1:12 remaining to give the Mountaineers a 77-76 advantage.

Magic did not strike twice for Louisville's Packevicius as his three-point attempt with 38 seconds remaining was amiss and the Mountaineers sank free throws to ice the game and win by seven points.

"Tonight was a great win over a great team," beamed WVU head coach James Frizzell. "[Louisville] has a great squad and they'll give us a run for our money when we play them later this season in Louisville, I'm sure."

Armondo Whelchel was the leading man for West Virginia as he scored 21 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Nile Stevenson also played well as he tallied 19 points and four rebounds. Fred Joiner paced the offense with 11 points, five rebounds, six assists, and three steals while Predrag Gabler added 13 points and hit three three-pointers.

Mike Packevicius led Louisville in scoring with a game-high 22 points and four assists. Power forward Dee Granger totaled 12 points, six boards, and three steals while fellow big man Hilton Castro tallied 11 points and six rebounds. Mamadou Stapley also added 12 points and three rebounds of his own from off the bench for the Cardinals.

West Virginia shot 30/57 (53%) from the field overall and 8/15 (53%) from three-point range in this one as the offense was clicking on all cylinders for most of the game. They also held a decisive advantage on the boards, where they outrebounded the Cardinals 31-21.

Next up for West Virginia is a tough road game against Notre Dame in South Bend.

Congrats on the big win. I can honestly say in all my years of playing this game I don't remember ever having a perfect season. Hopefully you can do it for me.

Well that is definitely not the Marquette team were used to seeing. It'll be interesting to see how good they are in the next couple years as all those guys grow together
