The Legacy of Tony Block and the Cheyney Wolves (FBCB2)

Cheyney promotes assistant to be new lead man!

Cheyney, PA - Tony Block has been promoted to Head Coach of the Cheyney Wolves, to replace recently retired John Osborn. Block has been an assistant coach for 14 seasons and has helped his teams reach the NCAA Tournament in each of his last six seasons, including two at Cheyney.

Block takes the reigns for one of the Division 2's most dominant programs, the Wolves have made the NCAA Tournament 35 straight seasons and have 2 National Championships with the latest coming in 1993. After a 3 year run from 1999-2001 of being in the Final Four the Wolves have failed to advance past the Sweet Sixteen the last 7 seasons.

Cheyney plays in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference which has been one of the country's toughest conferences. California (PA) and Edinboro are tied with Cheyney for the most NCAA appearances in the conference with 35. Gannon, West Chester, and Kutztown also all have over 30 appearances though Gannon and West Chester are the only other teams to have won a National Championship. Recently East Stroudsburg has come on strong having made the tournament every year since 1992. Lock Haven has made the tournament the last 6 years and Slippery Rock has made it 13 out of the last 14.

Block will have his hands full keeping Cheyney at the level expected by both Alumni and the Athletic Director, he has been given a goal for his first season to Win the National Championship. Expectations are high and so is the pressure, can Block handle it?

Block announces staff

Cheyney, PA - Cheyney head coach Tony Block has rounded out his coaching staff with what appears to be a great supporting cast. Harold Bryant was hired as the team's Lead Assistant, Bryant is known as a good recruiter and has a history of developing players defensively. Bryant joins the program after a 1-year stint with Alabama-Huntsville.

Fred Jarvis was named the team's Recruiting Director, Jarvis is regarded as one of the nation's best recruiters and should be a great addition to the staff. Jarvis was previously at Virginia Union. Chris Hutton was named the Lead Scout, Hutton is an excellent scout and brings 21 years of experience to the team. His last stint was at Cal Poly Ponoma.

Cheyney inks 4

Cheyney, PA - Head coach Tony Block wasted no time making a splash with recruits, Block has brought in one of the best classes in the country for next season. Leading the way is small forward Orville Bickford from St. Joseph HS in St. Joseph, Michigan. Bickford is 6'7 212 lbs and averaged 20.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg while shooting 57% from the field and he is better known for his defense. Joining Bickford is shooting guard Olen Folse from Oakcreast HS in Mays Landing, NJ. Folse is 6'3 185 lbs and averaging 23.5 ppg while shooting 41% from deep. The third member of the class is point guard John Whitmore a 6'0 182 lb stud from West Lafayette HS in Indiana. Whitmore is averaging 23.2 ppg and 7.4 apg, Block says he has the potential to be one of the best passers he's seen. Rounding out the class is center Brian Batts from West HS in West Bend, WI. Batts is 6'9 206 lbs and averaging 18.6 ppg and 9.9 rpg.
