Lions Claw Back

New York, New York -

After being annihilated by Duke in their previous game after committing 21 turnovers and finding themselves down by 4 at halftime in this contest, rookie head coach Logan Martinez delivered a simple, yet stern message to his team in the locker room: "Stop turning the damn ball over guys!"

By the end of the game, it was clear Martinez's message was taken to heart by the Columbia players

The Columbia Lions crushed the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks in the second half in route to a 65-46 victory. After committing 8 turnovers in the first half, the Lions only gave the ball away four times in the second half.

The victory gave Coach Martinez his first career victory. "It feels nice to get this W. Hopefully it'll be the first of many more to come in the future. Right now though, I'm focused on getting this team in the mindset to play the way it did in the second half tonight...We were outstanding coming out of that locker room."

The Lions did not shoot particularly well tonight but they out-rebounded the Hawks by an astounding number (46-22) and really used their superior size to their advantage. Noruwa Agho let all scorers with 24 points for the Lions while center Mark Cisco had 15 boards to go with 5 points and 7 assists.

Kennedy takes over as St. Johns downs Columbia

Queens, NY -

St. Johns managed to pull away late from the pesky Columbia Lions Wednesday night 82-72. D.J. Kennedy led the Johnnies with 28 points. He hit some clutch shots down the stretch, and was all over the court defensively as well.

"That was definitely one of the best individual performances I have seen in awhile," commented Coach Logan Martinez in the post-game press conference. "He was simply outstanding. Draining 3s, swiping the ball away, swatting the ball back in peoples faces....wow. What a player."

The Columbia Lions hung with St. Johns for much of the night as each team had several runs. The action was back and forth. Eventually though, St. Johns made the most important run and put the game out of reach. The Lions had several chances to make the score closer, but could not convert on a few bunny shots, thus ending any likelihood of them coming up with the upset.

Point guard Malik Boothe for the Johnnies controlled the game well with 12 assists to go along with Kennedy's stat-sheet stuffing performance. Noruwa Agho once again led the Lions in points with 18, while center Mark Cisco continued his dominance on the boards with a 14-point, 13-rebound game to give him his second double-double of the year.

Rough 1-2 start, but it's to be expected when you play against Duke and St. John's.

Also, I like the highlights videos they look pretty cool!

Lancers Dominate Lions

Philadelphia, PA -

Coach Logan Martinez will be eating crow tonight. A lot of it. A few days after making a message board post completely disregarding the Longwood Lancers basketball program, his words definitely came back to haunt him as his Columbia Lions fell tonight 69-60.

And the score was much closer than it should have been. The Lions woke up a bit near the end of the game a hit a few threes to make the score more respectable, but in the end they still came out on the losing end.

On the message board "Operation Sports," a username linked to belonging to Coach Logan Martinez posted, "Longwood is pretty terrible...I always chuckle to myself when I see them appear on my schedule because of how bad they are and because their name is pretty funny. *smiley face*."

This did not go unnoticed by the Longwood coaching staff of course and their game plan was executed to perfection by its players. The Lancers dominated in ever facet of the game, specifically making the Lions play to their slow-paced tempo and rebounding. The Lancers out-rebounded the Lions by 13 and had 11 offensive rebounds to the Lions 4.

Coach Martinez, visibly distraught in the post-game conference went on to say, "We simply did not show up tonight. Simple as that. Our defense was atrocious, and we let them dictate the pace of the game. The faster-pace offense that I am implementing into this program is gonna take some time for the players to get used to, but this game was a definite step backwards. Add on to the fact that I look like an idiot for my message board post and you can chalk this up as one of the most embarrassing experiences in my sporting career..."

Noruwa Agho led the Lions with 12 points, but much like the rest of the offense, settled for outside jump-shots inside of driving to the rack. The Lions only attempted 9 free throws on the night after shooting 20+ in their first three games.

Re: Career Coaching Legacy of Logan Martinez

Ivy League News

The Ivy League is definitely not known for its basketball tradition. However, a few members of the league are doing quite well to open the season, specifically the Princeton Tigers.

The Tigers are 5-0 on the year with some eye-raising wins against strong non-conference competition. The Tigers won the Hawaiian Invitational, beating #9 Duke, a very solid Illinois team, and #15 Marquette on back-to-back-to-back days. The season is a long time from being over, but these victories have gained the attention of NCAA fans across the nation.

In the meantime, Harvard won a game at Stanford, and Brown has won a game at Michigan. These non-conference victories, especially considering they were not played on the Ivy teams' home court, certainly are a plus for the overall credibility of the league.
