Lakers 98, Nets 88
Lakers streak rolls on, wrap up home stand undefeated Six game home stand results in key victories with road trip ahead LOS ANGELES, Chemistry is suppose to take time to spread over a group of players who have never played together before, especially when those players are five all-star players at one point in their career. In 2003-04 the Lakers were hoping that the joining of future hall-of-famers Karl Malone and Gary Payton paired up with Shaquille O'Neal and a young Kobe Bryant would bring the Lakers their fourth title in five years and while that team did succeed in making it to the NBA Finals, they were outplayed, outmatched and outworked by a hungrier and tougher Pistons team in five games. In 2007-08 the Lakers pulled off one of the most lopsided trades in history by acquiring all-star power forward Pau Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies for practically nothing and teamed up with a very young and upcoming Andrew Bynum along side a older, wiser, mature Kobe Bryant the Lakers exceeded expectations and made it to three straight NBA Finals, winning back-to-back in 2009 and 2010. Now for the third time in his hall of fame career, Kobe Bryant has the pleasure of being surrounded by four future hall of famers and five players who have been an all-star at one point in their career. And here we thought the Lakers and Celtics of the 1980's was a coup. Along side Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol, Metta World Peace, Steve Nash and Antawn Jamison, Kobe Bryant has turned the Lakers who were the laughing joke of the league going winless for the first time in team history during the pre season into the most dominant and most intimidating team in less then a month. Think about this, former coach Mike Brown went 0-8 with these stars including a 1-4 second round elimination from the playoffs last year when the Lakers had their big three of Bryant, Bynum and Gasol and since the coaching change that saw the Lakers bring in Mike D'Antoni, he has with the same group that Brown had at the start of October gone a perfect 11-0 to start the season. Wrapping up a six game home stand with the Brooklyn Nets, the Lakers were battled tested early and often, but eventually pulled away in the second half with an explosive offensive attack. Pau Gasol was at the head of that attack leading the Lakers with 24 points and grabbing 6 rebounds and handing out 8 assists on the night behind a 9-13 performance from the field and Kobe Bryant put in 23 points while Dwight Howard added 22 points, 17 rebounds and 4 assists ensuring the Lakers perfect home stand and that they remained unbeaten this season defeating the Nets 98-88 infront of a sold out STAPLES Center crowd. Steve Nash had a quiet night scoring finishing with 6 points, but pulled down 5 rebounds and handed out 5 assists running the Lakers offense to perfection, minus the 24 turnovers the team had throughout the night. Joe Johnson led the Nets with a game high 28 points, but was 13-28 from the field including 2-9 from the three point line. Kris Humphries and Gerald Wallace each had 11 points apiece as no other starter scored in double figures. Deron Williams was hounded by the Lakers young quick guards all night finishing with just 7 points and dishing out 8 assists, but those 7 points, he had to work for them against guys like Nash, Bryant, Morris, Meeks and Blake at times. For the Lakers the earlier schedule has been home friendly to them, but now they set out for a short three game road trip that starts tomorrow night in Sacramento before playing a back to back this weekend against the Grizzlies and Mavericks. We'll have to see if the Lakers make it back to STAPLES next Tuesday to face the Pacers if they are still undefeated or if they were able to go on the road and dominate.
