Columbia leads Ivy League at 5-1

Hanover, NH - Conference play in the Ivy League is hot & will only keep getting more intense as the season shapes up in the nation's most prestigious conference.

The Columbia Cougars lead the pack at the moment with the slim lead over Brown at 5-1. The Cougars will head to a hostile Dartmouth environment & it doesn't get much easier for the Brown Bears as they are hosted by Princeton & Yale this coming weekend.

Team effort is always the number one motto, but you can't have star performances without star players. Brown's Taylor Baldwin, Columbia's Ollie Bradford, Dartmouth's Major Fraser, Yale's Hector Woolley, and Princeton's Ray Colwell, will continue to battle for Ivy League Player of the Year & do their part in keeping their respective university at the top of the board.

OT thriller goes the way of Dartmouth

Hanover, NH - As the buzzer sounded, the student section erupted & spilled out onto the court to help celebrate their home team in the 100-90 OT victory over Ivy League leader, Columbia.

In the middle of the mosh pit, Head Coach Laird Machado, was seen giving high fives and fist bumps to Dartmouth faithful, staff, and students. "I have never been a part of a more exciting & thrilling win in my life", said Machado. "Our guys were ice cold, ICE cold, from the line & did not give in when it mattered the most!" Dartmouth shot 67% from the line overall, but it was their near perfect 15-17 late in the second half & OT that gave them the edge & subsequent victory.

Down 39-43 at half, Dartmouth came out with more edge and grit in the second, managing to outscore Columbia 45-41. As the clock got under one minute, down 75-78, the Lions began fouling & sending the Big Green to the line. Theron Weaver put the ball through the hoop twice & padded the lead. Without hesitation or a timeout, the Lions in bounded the ball & stormed down the court past the Dartmouth press to drain a three to narrow the gap. Rinse and repeat was the name of the game for Columbia as the final minute saw a perfect 3-3 from deep to tie the game 84-84 & send it into OT.

In overtime, Dartmouth continued driving the ball in hard & getting fouled, sending their best Free Throw shooters to the line in Weaver, Parsons, and Pandov. Couple the ice in the veins with deep bench player, Benson Baynes, snagging three steals, and you have a recipe for OT success. "Benson (Baynes) had without question the most important five minutes of his season tonight", said Machado. Slightly out of breath and with one huge smile on his face, Baynes gave some insight following the victory. "Man, what a way to win", shouted Baynes. "I knew they were focused on hitting the long ball so they'd find a way to get each other open. I figured, just intercept that thing when it's on motion & after the first steal I kind of figured out their process and just attacked the second & third time."

If there was any team to beat to get the confidence rolling again, it was Columbia. The Big Green improve to 4-3 in the Ivy League and 13-7 on the season. Next up, Dartmouth will host Cornell, tomorrow night right back in Leede Arena.

Cornell takes page out of Dartmouth book in road win

Hanover, NH - It almost seemed as though Columbia phoned Cornell heading into the evening game in Leede Arena, asking the Big Red to give Dartmouth a taste of it's own medicine they dealt just one evening prior. The Big Red shot an almost unheard of, 95% from the line, going 20-21 in the 92-82 win over the Big Green.

The tone was quite different in Hanover compared to that of the OT game last night, but head man Laird Machado did his best to keep spirits up at the post game presser following the loss. "My guys played hard tonight & in the end, the ball bounced their way more times than not. I thought we did well on both sides of the ball & it should not go unnoticed we pulled down 9 offensive rebounds. When you play a team who shoots (looking down at the stat sheet), 53% from the field, 52% from deep, and, (laughs), 95% from the line, it's pretty hard to beat that even on your best night. I thought Floyd (Dearman), Nate (Goodman) and Antuane (O'Hara) came off the bench strong for us & despite the loss, I think we racked up another moral victory with the consistency of our depth.

Following their former five game win streak, the Big Green are 2-3 in the last five, putting together a 5-5 record in the last 10.

Penn's Eric Holmes leads charge for Quakers

Hanover, NH - It almost seems like the script has been flipped the last two games as the Big Green are outscored in the paint, one game removed from being out shot at the line following a win at Columbia due to the aforementioned.

Led by Eric Holmes, who rattled off 31 points in the prior meeting with Dartmouth, Penn outscored Dartmouth in the paint, 42-40. Scoring buckets under the rim has been the go-to strategy for Machado and his Big Green for most of the season, but it was evident Penn came in prepared defensively for this strategy and decided to replicate it offensively, as well.

"They played some physical basketball today & I think it put us in a bit of shock mode. We failed to adjust to their game, expecting them to favor the long ball over driving it in...we just weren't ready, that's on me", said Machado.

Despite the loss, there has been a bright note for Dartmouth as Major Fraser recorded his fourth straight 20+ point performance following a cold streak. At the post game press conference, Fraser was asked what has helped get him back into the scoring groove. "Honestly, practicing something harder. I know that sounds weird, but I was getting nervous shooting from deep for a bit & losing confidence. It wasn't until Floyd and I went in a couple of mornings at 4:30 am and did nothing but half court shots. Once we were hitting the deepest stuff, the normal range felt easier. It's like, using a medicine ball." Fraser certainly hasn't gotten back to his accuracy from deep, but he's once again hitting from range and scoring, something Dartmouth has been without.

The 4-5 Big Green will host the 4-4 Princeton Tigers next in what will be a huge showdown for the middle of the pack race as both trail Yale and Columbia whom are tied at 6-3.

Strong second half defense key to victory over Princeton

Hanover, NH - The finale of the Big Green's four game home stand concludes with a win over the Princeton Tigers, 68-66.

Turnovers were key for Dartmouth as all five starters had at least one steal, led by Theron Weaver, who recorded three. The Big Green were consistently able to produce off the mishaps from Princeton, leading to both transition buckets scored by Pandov in the paint and long range shots hit by Fraser. Both players were the only two to score in double digits for Dartmouth, though the bench added a strong 23 points thanks to Floyd Dearman and Nate Goodman recording a combined 17 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals.

The game remained tight late in the second, and with less than a minute to go, both teams were knotted up at 63-63. Following a Dartmouth basket from Pandov, the Tigers rolled down the court, moved the ball around well, and snagged a three thanks to Ray Colwell, taking the lead 66-65. The Big Green just needed two points to secure the win, but Major Fraser found himself with a wide open look from distance with 10 seconds left to play & took the shot. "It may not have been the right shot for other people to take, but it was what felt right for me. Weav (Theron Weaver) fed me that ball & I knew their big guys were sitting down low waiting for my drive. I haven't been hitting my Free's (Free Throws) very well lately, so I decided to pull the trigger on what I know best", explained Fraser. "Major is the man", laughed Senior Captain, Cody Sowers. "I know for a fact I wouldn't want anyone else taking that deep ball shot at that point in the game. Had he missed (grinning over at Fraser), he knows we had his back...but he wasn't gonna miss that".

The Big Green get a big win over Princeton to even the match up, one to one. The Tigers still maintain the slight lead over Dartmouth in the conference race, but Princeton has also played one less game.

Excellent team play leads to victory in Ithaca

Ithaca, NY - Dartmouth started their first of four final games with a very solid victory on the road, 99-87.

The Big Green looked phenomenal on offense as the team shot an incredible, 69% on 42-61 from the field, 67% on 8-12 from deep, and hit 7-11 Free Throws. "We worked hard on passing this week in practice & moving the ball around", said Theron Weaver, who recorded 17 of the team's 38 Assists. "The boys make my job easy, it's like playing catch". Weaver was able to feed Fraser, Sowers, Pandov, and Goodman, who all recorded over 12 points, with Alton Pandov leading the pack at 30 points.

Even though Dartmouth was on fire, and then some, Cornell managed to do damage control, maintaining the deficit at around 10 points behind. The Big Red machine was led by Benny Acasio & Cal Newby who scored 51 of the team's 87 total points, 42 of those points from beyond the line.

"It's pretty ironic how we won today", laughed first year Head Coach, Laird Machado, following the victory. "They came into our house a few games ago and shot, what, like fifty some percent from the field and three? Now we come into their place and give them sixty something? I think we are due for a nice forty five to forty six type of game next meeting."

Dartmouth improves to 6-5 in the Ivy League & jumps a spot in the standings thanks to a loss from Princeton. The Big Green, with three games remaining, will take on the 7-4 Columbia Lions, 8-3 Yale Bulldogs, and 6-5 Brown Bears.

Major goes off in Francis Levien Gymnasium

New York, NY - From the second the ball was tipped, it was obvious, this was Major Fraser's world, and we were just living in it.

The man who had scored 20+ points in each of his last six games, but not over 30, was due for a bomb, and this time, it came when Dartmouth needed it most. Fraser was 15-28 from the field & a remarkable 11-20 from deep, the spot 33 of his 43 total points came from.

Columbia, like Cornell one game prior, was not going down without a fight. Ollie Bradford, who was the main protagonist in Dartmouth's previous OT victory over the Lions, was at it again on 9-12 from the field and 5-7 from distance. Bradford received consistent help from Columbia starters, Matt Karis, Devin Shields, and backup, Frank Karis. Fortunately for Dartmouth, the inconsistency bug hit Columbia in the second half & stayed far away from the Big Green as Fraser and Pandov put the hurt on the Lions.

With the victory, Dartmouth has now tied Columbia at 7-5 for second place in the Ivy League. Two games remain on the season & Dartmouth must be all in for a home stand against league leader, Yale.

With two games remaining, the first place Bulldogs will take on second place Dartmouth, in what could be the de facto Ivy League Championship game on a Yale victory. With two head to head wins over Columbia, the Big Green have the edge on the Lions at 7-5. Hypothetically, if Dartmouth beats Yale & Brown in their next two, and Yale loses their final game, Dartmouth would be crowned Ivy League Champion, regardless of Columbia's record. Dartmouth holds the current advantage over Yale thanks to the two Columbia wins & potentially the victory against Brown. Yale just needs one victory to win the league, either at Dartmouth, or in their final game, when they host the last place Crimson.

It all comes down to the biggest game of the season in Hanover, tomorrow night, at Leede Arena.
