Dartmouth Recruitment
May 16th, 2008

Bernard inks to Big Green early;Allen with late push

Hanover, NH - First year Head Coach, Laird Machado, officially brought in his first career recruits today to the Dartmouth Big Green. Carter Allen & Bo Bernard will join the team in 2008 in hopes to improve on an already solid start to Machado's young career.

Dartmouth Big Green Recruiting - 2008
NAMEPOSCLASSHOMETOWNHTWTCALIBER
Carter Allen (#214, #57)PGHSManchester, NH (Mr. BB)6'2"175
Bo Bernard SGJUCO SoPhiladelphia, PA6'3"188

"I am very excited about these two young guns we've got joining our program", happily said Machado, who accompanied Allen at Manchester Memorial High School in his hometown of Manchester, NH on Signing Day. "Carter is a fantastic kid & it's fate how this situation worked out. I'd be lying to you if I said he was on our radar from the start & likewise, we weren't necessarily on his. Luckily for us, those schools he did have on his radar weren't putting out the offer, and they lost out on a awesome player." The schools Machado is referring to are Vanderbilt & Virginia who were long time linked to New Hampshire's Mr. Basketball, but fell through following their pursuit of higher ranked Point Guards.

Bo Bernard, whose name has been associated with Dartmouth since the start, officially signed his Letter of Intent at the start of the Official Signing Period. "Bo is going to bring grit, experience, and know how to this team, since he's been playing a league up from High School for over a year", said Machado. Bernard, who has been playing JUCO basketball at Richard Bland College in Petersburg, VA, will step into the Dartmouth program with some miles on his wheels in a good way.

ESPN.com weighed in on the signing of these two athletes:

"Dartmouth Basketball announced the Official Signing of ESPN 300 Point Guard, Carter Allen (#214), and JUCO Shooting Guard, Bo Bernard. Allen, who earned the title of New Hampshire's Mr. Basketball in 2007 was long time linked to the names of Vanderbilt & Virginia. As an strong skill player and above average shooter, Allen is able to be a strong second or third scoring option while being athletically gifted enough to do damage on the defensive side of the ball as well. Allen will find problems if he steps underneath the rim or is faced with a stretch Guard as his lighter package won't withstand heavier loads. As a smart player with good intelligence, Allen will be able to figure out the best avenue to attack on both sides of the ball. Bo Bernard is an athletically sound defensive player who will find his niche mainly on that side of the ball. Bernard, while not a strong scoring option, will be able to use his good to great athletism as means to create opportunities.

When asked about the potential for these two to have starting roles next season, Machado was hesitant to give anything away. "At the end of the day, we are gonna lose a couple guys to graduation and there will be openings in this lineup. I am confident there are guys up and down this roster who can fill those voids & at the end of the day, my decision is going to take all things into consideration."

Re: Dreaming of the Dance: A College Hoops 2K8 Legacy

Updated the first page with all info from the 2007-2008 season. Had an absolute blast through the first year & am very excited to keep it going. Could not believe we rallied those final 5 wins of the season to make the Ivy League so close. No sleep lost not winning the league this season, we exceeded expectations. Thanks to those who have been following & the next chapter starts now!

Dartmouth Schedule

Hanover, NH - Dartmouth officially published their upcoming schedule & roster for the 2008-2009 NCAA Basketball Season. The Big Green will begin the season by hosting the tough Duquesne Dukes before making a two game road trip for the NIT Tip-off Classic. Dartmouth will join Penn State, Florida A&M, and Illinois at Chicago, in the four game tournament. Following the NIT Classic, a long set of road games await the Big Green as they will travel to five straight opposing venues with the toughest competition being Wagner, a tournament team last season. From there on out, Dartmouth will mostly remain in Leede Arena, despite a trip to St. John's midway through. Conference play sees Dartmouth take on Columbia for a Home-Away trade off before getting into the grind of the Ivy league.

When asked about the team's upcoming schedule, now second year Head Coach, Laird Machado, was confident and energetic. "I am very excited to get our boys back out there & show what we were able to improve on throughout the offseason. I think we've got some tough competition coming up & we are looking forward to making a splash. We are going to use that Non-Conference road trip as a way to prove that we can go into hostile environments and take the win. Following the announcement of the schedule, Head Coach, Laird Machado, also released the team's roster for the upcoming season, including: final cuts, redshirts, transfers, and walk-on's.

Machado & staff were met with a tough challenge in evaluating the depth chart for the year & trying to piece together the perfect lineup. "We have options at multiple positions which is always a blessing", said Machado. "With four returning starters, two incoming players, and a bench that proved their capabilities last season, we had to make hard choices. After careful consideration, we felt that Theron (Weaver), Carter (Allen), Major (Fraser), Rashod (Parsons), and Alton (Pandov), will give us the best opportunity from the start. From there, Bo (Bernard) and Nate (Goodman), will see important minutes off the bench. Antuane (O'Hara), Jalen (Mihailovic), and Benson (Baynes), will have key roles & be looked at for situational purposes. At the end of the day, I have expressed to my men that we are a performance vehicle. Some of them are the engine, the wheels, the body, others are the transmission, the fuel, or the suspension. Everyone recognizes the winner as one, the sum of the parts, not as individuals."

Noticeably absent from this season's squad is former Freshman Point Guard, Kent Neverett, and former Sophomore Center, John-Michael Souchu. When asked about the departure of the two players, Machado took the high road. "Those guys played an important role in our machine last season & they leave here with nothing but our respect. Sometimes people see the path to success differently & you can't force someone down a road they don't want to be on." Neverett has joined The Citadel & Souchu is now a part of Alcorn State.

The Big Green will be tasked at improving on their 18-9 overall record from last season & their 9-5 record in Ivy League play. Senior Captain, Major Fraser, was optimistic about the road ahead. "Last year we loaded the cannon, this year, we're gonna let it rip. We are going to miss Cody (Sowers) out there, but Carter (Allen) has played really well in practice & he's got us all excited about what he's bringing to the table. That goes with everyone, like Coach said, we are one". Fraser, who was honored as Ivy League Player of the Year, First Team All-Conference, & finished fourth nationally in PPG last year, is a favorite to win the award a second time & has even garnered a bit of national attention.

Traditional powers top the charts

National Preseason Top 25

Chapel Hill, NC - Led by Seniors, Gary Riddle, Armie Huff, and standout Junior, Brad Gooding, the Tar Heels will start the season as #1 in the land. North Carolina, who bowed out of last year's tournament with an Elite 8 loss to Georgetown, will have to establish how to win without 2007 National Player of the Year, Nick Gourde.

National Preseason Top 25 - Updated: Nov 4, 2008

24California (Pac 10)0-0
25Texas A&M (Big 12)0-0

Following closely behind in both the Poll and literal distance are the Blue Devils of Duke. Similar to North Carolina, the blue blood met it's match early on in the tournament and suffered defeat one round earlier in the Sweet Sixteen to Memphis. The Blue Devils, who hauled in three Top 10 Recruits last season, will keep their new talent on ice & look to Junior Beau Soto & Senior Kevyn Atkinson to keep Duke at the top of the Polls throughout the season.

The 2007 National Champion Tennessee Volunteers round out the Top 3 as they bring forth an upperclassmen heavyweight with four Juniors and one Senior. The Volunteers will have to replace their lost All-American, Clark Curry, who led the nation in scoring last season and was the main cog in the National Championship machine. Junior, Parker Rose, is hailed as the second coming of Curry & has the momentum of a National Championship banner behind him.

The Top 10 finds a pair of ACC teams in #1 North Carolina & #2 Duke, a pair of Big East teams in #4 Connecticut and #6 Louisville, and finally, a pair of Pac 10 teams in #9 UCLA and #10 Washington. In terms of consistency, the Big East stands tall with six schools in the Top 25, three of which land in the Top 11, followed by the ACC, SEC, and Pac 10, who are tied with four a piece.

Game Update
November 7th, 2008

Second half scoring drought leads to loss

Hanover, NH - The Dartmouth Big Green opened the 2008-2009 Season in Leede Arena by hosting the Duquesne Dukes. Things looked to be in order for a shootout as the two teams totaled 86 first half points, ending the first 30 minutes at 44-42, Dukes lead. Strong defensive play from Duquesne prevailed in the second as Dartmouth hit a lengthy scoring drought & fell behind, eventually out of reach.

Following last season's 18-9 record, expectations for the four returning starter roster are fairly high. Theron Weaver, who led the nation in Assists Per Game last year, was at it again as he fed the ball 12 times & added 5 rebounds in the loss. Sophomore, Alton Pandov, who was awarded Ivy League Freshman of the Year, added 19 points on 8-12 from the field and 3-5 from the line. As a Freshman, Pandov proved to be one of the best Ivy League Big Men & played well above his age.

For no Dartmouth player may expectations be higher, however, than Senior, Major Fraser. The night certainly did not go as planned for Fraser, who is one season removed from ending as the nation's fourth best scorer. Contested shots were common for the 6'1" Senior who has moved from his usual position of Shooting Guard to Small Forward to account for Freshman Point Guard, Carter Allen, in the lineup. With 18 points on the night, Fraser did still contribute to the cause, but a lackluster 27% from the field & 21% from deep may have hurt more than it helped in the end.

"I liked how we looked in practice all week & I felt as though the first half showcased what we are capable of", said Laird Machado, Dartmouth's second year Head Coach. "In the second we looked a bit fatigued & that led to a good deal of bad decisions & poor shots". Freshman, Carter Allen, began his career for the Big Green with 12 points on 4-11 from the field and 2-9 from distance. When asked about Allen's performance on the evening, Machado put things into perspective. "Carter is an 18 year old playing in his first collegiate game with over a thousand in attendance...I felt he handled himself just fine. He's playing with a great group of guys & I know they will continue to mentor him."

The Big Green start the season with a loss, but will have a chance to rebound quickly as they travel to Columbus, OH, to take on Florida A&M in the NIT Tip-off Classic.

NIT Tip-Off Classic
November 10th, 2008

Goodman hot off bench in victory

Columbus, OH - The Big Green traveled to The Ohio State University for the first round of the NIT Tip-off Classic & defeated the Florida A&M Rattlers, 73-61.

Great defense, hard rebounding, fluid passing, and bench depth, all worked in-conjunction in the victory for the Big Green. With 18 points off the pine, Senior Power Forward, Nate Goodman, led Dartmouth in scoring & provided a constant Big Man threat while Alton Pandov got rest. Goodman, who was one of the main subs off the bench last season, has carried over his shot consistency from the field as he shot 75% in the win.

Speaking of consistency, the Florida A&M Rattlers were anything but, as they shot a miserable 4% from deep, hitting only one 3 Pointer in 24 Attempts. EJ Fameni, who led all scorers with 24 points, provided the only true threat to the Big Green as the only other double digit scorer for the Rattlers was Kyle Ferguson who had 11.

Rebounds were plentiful for the Big Green who pulled 38 off the glass, 10 of which being Offensive Rebounds. Major Fraser, Rashod Parsons, and Alton Pandov, combined for 24 of those 38. Despite the small frame, 6'1" Major Fraser nearly recorded his first double-double with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Following the victory, Fraser commented on his season high off the glass. "The position change has given me a different opportunity", said Fraser. "Since Carter (Allen) is more often at the key, I can float and find my openings. I found myself at or near the rim quite a few times today & I just jumped as high as I could go & found some boards along the way".

Dartmouth advances to the NIT Tip-off Classic Championship & will take on the winner of Penn State vs. Illinois-Chicago. The victory & trip to the Championship marks the second straight early season tournament that Dartmouth has made the Finals in.

Re: Dreaming of the Dance: A College Hoops 2K8 Legacy

NIT Tip-Off Championship
November 11th, 2008

Dartmouth puts forth good effort in loss

Columbus, OH - The finale of the NIT Tip-off Classic concluded today as the Dartmouth Big Green were defeated by the Penn State Nittany Lions, 98-75.

The Big Green managed to keep the score close throughout the first half as both teams traded off baskets in the paint & long range bombs. Major Fraser earned some open looks thanks to ball movement from Dartmouth & was able to connect on 3-6 from deep in the first. After a couple of strong defensive plays went the way of Penn State, the Nittany Lions built a comfortable 52-37 lead entering halftime.

The second exhibited much of the same as Penn State continued scoring in bunches & stopping a Dartmouth possession here and there. Penn State Point Guard, Nolan Ricci, recorded a double-double on the day & led his team in scoring with 27 points & 11 assists. He was side kicked by Scooter Nahra who recorded 10 points & pulled 11 balls off the glass. Rebounding was definitely a strong advantage for Penn State as 35 balls were hauled compared to that of Dartmouth's 27.

"Our main goal was to get into this final game with a chance to play & learn from a really good team like Penn State", said Machado, following the loss. "I'm less concerned with what they did & more about what we did. We put up 75 points on a Big Ten program on a neutral court, three games into the season. If that's not one heck of an accomplishment, I am not sure what is". Today versus Penn State marks only the second time Laird Machado & his Big Green have faced a Power Conference opponent. Last season, Dartmouth was hosted by Rutgers, but was held under 60 points in the loss.

The Big Green will head on a lengthy five game road trip over the next few weeks, visiting UMBC, Wagner, Maine, St. Francis (NY), and finally, Fairleigh Dickinson.

Re: Dreaming of the Dance: A College Hoops 2K8 Legacy

Game Update
November 15th, 2008

There's something in the water at UMBC

Baltimore, MD - As the buzzer sounded, a combined 200 points had been accounted for between the Dartmouth Big Green & UMBC Retrievers. Both teams averaged a combined 60% from the field, with Dartmouth hitting a career high 65% for Head Coach, Laird Machado. UMBC shot 37 Three Pointers in the contest, hitting 17 of them for 46%.

"These games are the most fun you don't want to have again", laughed Machado. "It's a blast watching these talented guys light it up, but at some point, someone was likely going to cool off, and I am just glad that wasn't us before that horn sounded." The Big Green remained on fire throughout the entirety of the game as five players recorded over 14 points.

Though he only scored 3 points on the evening, Theron Weaver accounted for, at a minimum, 36 points as he assisted a career high, 18 baskets. That number most certainly is higher considering he fed Major Fraser & Carter Allen on multiple of their three point plays. Weaver, who led the NCAA last season in Assists, is at it again, averaging 11.3 Assists Per Game, good for #1 in the country. "I'm just here to win the game", confidently spoke Weaver. "Getting assists is like scoring buckets to me, but better."

Despite the exciting win, Laird Machado kept things dialed in in the locker room as he addressed his team, following the game. "This was one of the best shooting performances from a team I have seen in a very long time, but, it was also one of the worst defensively. We can't leave shooters open or allow highway sized lanes towards the net. Let's work our fouls and maintain our physicality."

The victory brings Dartmouth back to even & Machado earns his 11th Non-Conference victory, improving to 11-6 in his young career. The Big Green will take on Wagner in Staten Island, NY, three days from now. Wagner, a tournament team last season who upset then #2 seeded Arkansas, will be a big test for the squad.
