   With the worst record in the NBA last season, the Sacramento Kings entered the offseason with the best chance at a first round pick at 25%. The Los Angeles Lakers hold onto their pick if it remains in the top five. If not, it goes to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Cleveland Cavaliers, a team that does not need a lottery pick because of the talent on their roster, has a 1.7% chance at the top pick. The Cavaliers fall at the number nine slot. The Cavaliers slot in the lottery is thanks to the trade that sent Kyrie Irving to the Celtics. Along with Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder and Ante Zizic, the Cavaliers also received a 2018 first round pick from the Brooklyn Nets and a 2020 second round pick from the Miami Heat.

    There were almost no big surprises in the draft lottery on May 15, 2018. Almost. The Memphis Grizzlies, with a 9% chance at the number overall pick, leaped from the sixth spot to the third. That meant that the Atlanta Hawks lose a chance at picking in the top three as they are now slotted into the fourth pick. The Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers, who each also had a 9% chance at the number one pick overall, followed at five and six respectively. Since the Lakers did not fall out of the top five, they keep the pick which would have gone to the Philadelphia 76ers. The origins of the trade go back to the previous draft. Last year, the Boston Celtics traded the number one overall pick the the 76ers.

 2018 Boston Celtics Draft Picks 
With the 27th pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, the Boston Celtics selected Jeffery Rodman out of UCLA. Rodman's size and length were what stood out to the Celtics. Able to defend both forward positions as well as centers, Rodman's versatility was very attractive to the Celtics. Rodman still has to develop some, but should see spot duty during the season.

    The time has come for players and teams to decide whether they want to opt in or out of contracts. Depending on which team you're rooting for, you're either elated or in a state of panic. Speculation on what team LeBron James would want to play for in 2018 has been put to bed as he has decided to stay with the Cleveland Cavaliers. This also means that the media and fans get to speculate where he may want to play after next season. The Oklahoma City Thunder were dealt a double dose of despair when both Paul George and Carmelo Anthony declined their player options. Keeping both players was a long shot, but free agency may be enough to lure both away. Fans of the Golden State Warriors join the Thunder in pondering what will become of their star player. Kevin Durant has decided to decline his player option and will become a free agent. Durant formed a fearsome trio with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. All three averaged over 20 points per game last season.

 July - October 2018    There have not been many major moves during the free agency period. Most players decided to stick with their current teams by accepting the player option or re-signing in free agency. Carmelo Anthony is one of the only top free agents to find himself on another team. Anthony's move came with a little bit of controversy, as reports had begun to circulate that he signed a 3-yr deal with the Utah Jazz. Anthony eventually signed a one year deal with the Chicago Bulls.

  How do the Cleveland Cavaliers rebound? The Cleveland Cavaliers suffered a shocking upset loss to the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of the playoffs last season. Cleveland's 4-0 loss to the Bucks presented some serious questions and LeBron James' pending departure did not ease the anxiety. James eventually chose to stay in Cleveland and Isaiah Thomas signed a long-term deal. Other questionable offseason additions leave outsiders wondering whether or not the team can be competitive in the eastern conference. Are the Philadelphia 76ers title contenders? Another big shocker from last season was how the 76ers performed in the playoffs. Even though they were swept in the NBA Finals, the 76ers have retained many of the players that were vital to their playoff run. Core players like Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons and Makelle Fultz should have the 76ers in position to have another fantastic year. How competitive will the Washington Wizards be this season? After four straight years with a winning record, the Wizards took a nosedive and finished 31-51 last season. John Wall missing 31 games did not help their cause. Head coach Scott Brooks was fired in February, only to be hired again in July. So far, that seems to be their only puzzling move of the offseason. The team signed guard Seth Curry who averaged 13 points per game. If he is able to match that production off the bench, the Wizards might be able to make some noise in the eastern conference. What is the future of the Charlotte Hornets? The Hornets have not had any consistent success in the last several years. Now that Kemba Walker is gone, it looks like they may be underwhelming for a while. Even though they managed to get Rudy Gobert, there isn't much else on the roster to get excited about. If they manage their salary cap right and land another top three pick, they could begin to turn things around in the next few years.
