1968-1969 Game 1 Results
The depth on this first team is really rough. After about 7 guys, it gets real shaky. Foul trouble and/or injuries could decimate this team.
My lineup to start the year: G 6'0" Dirk Gentile, Sophomore G 6'2" Earl Gordon, Senior F 6'5" Jan Bratcher, Freshman F 6'9" Charles Neff, Sophomore C 6'10" Jan Bowie, Senior Two freshmen, Stansbury and Ceja will be the first off the bench. Hackney is versatile enough to play the 3 and 4 poorly, and will surely see some time as well. The first points in Emmett14's era is at the free throw line by the freshman Bratcher. By the time of the first media timeout with 15:40 left, we trail 11-13. Hartford is off to a very good start. We're 5-8 from the line. Neff has 4 points and 2 rebounds early on. Both teams are really doing well offensively, and at the 11:10 mark we lead 24-20. Gordon's got 7 points and Neff is at 6 with 4 boards. But both teams have cooled considerably and Hartford goes on a little run, and after we rebound a missed shot I call a timeout to regather. With 5:52 left, it's all tied up at 28. Bratcher has 8 points to lead the team. Gentile picked up his 2nd foul. At half, the score is Hartford 37 - Hampton 35. Our shooting percentage, which started off well, is down to 35%. Gillies has 13 points for Hartford, which is pretty fluky. Bratcher has 10 for us, but is 2-8 from the field to go with his 5-6 from the line. Bowie fouls twice in 50 seconds to pick up his 4th foul and both teams are hitting shots, and we're down 41-42 with 19:10 left. At the media time out at 11:42, we trail 58-60. Bratcher is up to 16 points, but White is starting to beat us up inside and has 12 and 9 for the Hawks. Godin hits a 3 for Hartford to get up to 17 points and extend their lead to 58-67. I call timeout with 8:50 and we're in trouble. At the 2:51 mark, we're down 68-79 and we are having a hard time scoring, and I imagine that will be a frequent occurrence this season. I've hardly talked about him, but Gordon has 19 points and 6 boards on 6-9 shooting. By the end, the score isn't a pretty one. Final score is Hartford 86 - Hampton 71. Gordon ends up with a very efficient 22 points, but everyone else to a man, struggled to score. Hartford was efficient on offense. Code:

1968-1969 Game 2
November 20th, 1968 at the Navy Midshipmen (0-0)
Location: Annapolis, Maryland Conference: Patriot League 1967-1968 record: 17-14 (11-9) Postseason: None The Naval Academy is a 35 prestige school that had a very nice run in the 30's to the mid 40's, making several postseason tournaments. They have 6 NCAA appearances, their last one being in 1955-56, where they lost in the 1st round. Code:

Has a very nice three point shot. Defense is poor. SF: Hubbs, 6'3, Junior: 3 year starter. Averaged 15 points a game last year. Loves to attack the basket, and has only shot 25 threes through his first two seasons. Can create for others too, 2.7 assists a game last year. Average defender. PF: Cray, 6'9", Sophomore: Started 14 games last year. Averaged 5.4 points and 5.0 rebounds in 21.5 minutes. Versatile forward, who could get away with playing the 3. Shoots the ball well, and will get on the glass. C: Dickerson, 6'11", Junior: Started last year and averaged 8.5 points and 6.7 boards. Solid big man with good size. Scores some, gets on the glass and can block a few shots. Very good big man for his league. Bench: Wisner is a 6'2 guard with a nice mid range game, but is a horrendous defender. Snelling is a true freshman guard with some offensive ability at 6'4". Their post defense is weak. Looks like the sophomore 6'7" forward, Medina, will be the main guy. Good defender who is bouncy and will block some shots. But can't score a lick and isn't much on the glass. Coach: Hal Coleman, 57 years old. 155-138 career record. 5th season at Navy. Solid recruiter and offensive guru. Before he got to Navy, he spent 5 years at Howard (a fellow MEAC school), where he had some decent success, always being competitive in conference and getting them to a few postseason tournaments. They've got some offensive talent in their starting lineup, which their coach is well equipped to take advantage of. Their bench is weak, and is full of freshman and/or lackluster players. Hopefully a few of their starters can get into foul trouble. New Top 25, week 2: Code:

1968-1969 Game 2 Results
By the 2nd media time out, at 11:49 we trail 8-10. Both teams are struggling from the field, and are under 30% so far. We're in some foul trouble as well, as both Neff and Gordon are at 2 fouls, and are horrible depth is about to be tested.
Media time out at 7:20, and we trail 10-15. Both teams are a horror show offensively. We're at 22% and they are at 25%. We're 1-12 from three and have 4 players with 2 fouls, all of them starters. My depth is so pitiful, that I'll have to risk a few of them playing. Last media time out of the first half, and we trail 16-23, with 3:29. Have all of my 2 foul guys back in, hoping to hold on until half time. Dickerson for Navy has 8 points and 10 boards. We survive for the most part, with just Neff picking up his 3rd. But, the halftime score is Navy 30 - Hampton 22. Navy has yet to hit a three pointer, but is killing us on the glass 27-15. Dickerson is at 9 and 12 and Crouse has 4 points, 4 boards and 4 assists. Gordon has 9 to lead the way for us, on 3-4 shooting. The rest of the team is a combined 4-16 from the field. Gentile is shooting way too much, 3-10 from the field. Under 12 time out of the 2nd half with 11:48 and we're down 32-45. Navy's starting to get their offense going now. Crouse picked up 4 assists in 4 minutes. 7:37 left and we've made a dent, trailing 39-45. Unfortunately, Gordon picked up his 4th and will have to sit for a few minutes. He's up to 12 points and 6 boards. Gentile has slowed down a little bit, and is having a much better 2nd half, 2-3 from the field and has 15 points now. But, they immediately go a 9-0 run and then Gordon fouls out and with 2:30 left, it's pretty well all over but the box score, and we trail 39-53. We score a total of one point the last 7:37, a Bratcher free throw with less than a minute left. And the final score ends up being Navy 57 - Hampton 40. We shoot less than 30% from the field and are 7-30 from beyond the arc. A very ugly game. Cleland, a backup point guard had absolutely horrendous minutes. His +/- over a 30 minute average is an impossible -42. Going to be a long year while we wait for reinforcements. Code:

1968-1969 Game 3
November 23rd, 1968 vs the Kentucky State Thorobreds (0-1)
Location: Frankfort, Kentucky Conference: Independent 1967-1968 Record: 6-23 Postseason: None Kentucky State is a team that joined the NCAA in 1911, and have been unaffiliated with a conference ever since. Typically, it can be tough for Independent squads to find their way into a conference with an automatic berth, as many of them just tread water and act as soup cans for bigger schools to beat up on. KYSU had some solid years in the 40's and 50's for their level, but didn't get an invite during those years, and have seen themselves fall back down to a 9 prestige school. They haven't had more than 10 wins in a season since the 1961-62 campaign. They somehow managed to get a home game against Arkansas (one of the things I wish I could change in this game is how often power conference teams go on the road to play teams they would never, ever play there. Let alone having 2 or 3 games a year like that). They were beat my 30. Code:

Solid offensive guard who is competent defensively. SF: Turner, 6'6'", Senior: Played 12 minutes a game last year. Good three point shooter, but is slow moving his feet on the perimeter, and would be better utilized as an undersized post who can stretch the floor. PF: Wagner, 6'9", Senior: Started last year and averaged 7.6 points and 8.4 rebounds a game. Was 13-42 from three last year and is solid on the glass. Poor defender. C: Wilkinson, 6'10", Freshman: Two star recruit out of Ohio. He's got a little skill offensively, and is another big that will shoot the three. He's already pretty developed, and shouldn't improve too much. Below average on the glass and just barely acceptable defensively. Bench: Prater is a 6'4" sophomore guard who got 14 minutes a game last year. He's a good defender with a nice jump shot, but doesn't rebound and isn't more than a spot up shooter. Buckles is their backup point guard and he's a guy that likes to drive to the basket and then struggle to convert. Freshman Feaster gets the post minutes off the bench, getting 22 in their first game. He's very bad defensively, but he's got some skills offensively and will rebound. Coach: Richard Finch, 35 years old. 4th season at Kentucky State. He's a horrible coach, 35 or below in everything. These super low level schools give guys too much rope sometimes as they have such low expectations. So, Finch might be there a while.

1968-1969 Game 3 results
This is easily our best chance at a win as the Thorobreds aren't much. We're going to start out in man and see what our defense is made of.
At the first media timeout at 14:51, we trail 5-12. Our offense is just so bad. Gentile has all 5 of our points. Gordon also has 2 fouls, which will only add to the futility. We start hitting a few shots and at the 11:54 mark we trail 13-16. Stansbury has a three off the bench and 5 total points. We've switched to the matchup zone, the other defense we play. For the first time all year, we go a nice, extended run, 11-3 to be exact, and suddenly at 6:23 after a KYST turnover, we lead 24-23. A couple of three pointers have fallen, including one by the freshman Fowler, who didn't play the first two games. He's listed as a post, but his game resembles that of a 3 more than anything. He deserves playing time. The lead changes hands several times over the last few minutes and Bowie has a chance to tie it up at the break, but only hits 1 of 2 free throws with 1 second left and the half time score is Kentucky State 35 - Hampton 34. Gentile leads us with 12 points, and is having his best game of the year so far. Fowler and Stansbury have combined for 11 points off the bench. Neff has 8 boards and 2 assists. The first media timeout is at 15:03 and both teams have started off hot, and it's all tied up at 47. Bratcher has hit a couple of threes, but both Gentile and Gordon have 3 fouls, which could pose a major problem if we want to win this game. Neff is up to 11 boards, but has 4 turnovers to go with them. Turner for KYST has 15 and 4. 10:13 left and we lead 54-53. Every time we get an opportunity to extend the lead we blow it with a turnover. Gentile and Bowie come out and hit back to back three pointers, and with 9:34, the Thorobreds call timeout and we lead 60-53. At the 6:54 mark we've extend the lead just a bit, up to 68-59. Stansbury has hit a couple more threes, and has 11 points now. It's probably fools gold. Gentile is 2-7 from three, but 6-11 from the field total and has 17 points. Gentile hits back to back threes, though KYST gets one in between. Gentile then draws a charge to bring us to the last media timeout at 3:27, and we lead 77-70. Gentile's baskets get him up to 23 points. We turn the ball over a lot down the stretch, but KYST can't take advantage of it. Plus, we hit a few more threes before it is all said and done, and Emmett14 finally picks up his first win as a college coach. Final score: Hampton 84 - Kentucky State 74. Gentile finally has a breakout game after some lackluster performances to start the season. He's a very good offensive guard, he just hadn't shown it yet. Bratcher with a nice, efficient game. Stansbury's game off the bench will probably be his best of the year. The freshman Fowler and the senior Hackney will be battling for playing time all year as a hybrid 3/4. 15-33 from beyond the arc. Shooting threes is really the only way this team will find much success offensively, but probably shouldn't get too used to that performance from beyond the arc. Code:
