Re: NCAA looking into the recruitment of Cam Newton?

We all seem to be overlooking one critical point here:

Somebody with some interest in Auburn "potentially" gave Cecil Newton enough money to convince him that his son needed to go to Auburn and not MSU. The idea that Cecil asked MSU for money, but didn't get anything from Auburn is absolutely ridiculous and out of touch with reality. Auburn fans can scream all they want that Cam chose Auburn because it was a better program, and it is. That said Miss State has a coach who had coached a Heisman Winner and 2 first round draft pick quarterbacks and ran a system Cam knew like the back of his hand.

What is funny is to go back and check out the comments made about Auburn winning over his father in last year's recruiting thread. I guess when throwing around the money to buy a house that is easy.

I am starting to come to the conclusion that players should be able to make money from universities. If some booster is willing to pay 200k to a player to come to a school, then let them. these schools make millions off some of these kids and so does the NCAA. They should be able to make money as well.

If an actor is really good and has already been in several movies, would that kid not be able to practice their trade at a university? If a kid is one of the best rising physics undergrads due to some research, do you think that school would not make sure that he is able to live very well and do whatever it took to get him there.

The rules were originally written back in the early 1940s. http://www.answers.com/topic/ncaa (look about half way down the page for "purity code")

One could make the argument that this would give major powerhouses an advantage... I would reply... don't they already have that advantage without money?

Some players that are good in college will never sniff the NFL... let them make some money while they can. Also there should be some sort of football major in college. If this is a career path people want to take, might as well let them be as good as they can at it.

But miraculously, Cam had no idea that his dad was shopping him around. I can believe it.

You can't be serious with this.

MS State was his leader for most the of the process, then Auburn won over his father and landed his services. I don't know what is more out of touch, believing MS State was the only john or that Cam didn't know he was being pimped.

Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised to see Tennessee's name in all of this at some point. We were involved in his recruitment as well and with Lane, anything would have been possible.

This was brought up by Jack Arute on the Sirius XM College Football Playbook Show yesterday. I don't really know if I like the idea.

Amateur status would be lost and amateurs are what they are...amateurs.
