Maybe we're on to something. I do the same thing (power down through the dash) and my launch system is still going strong.

I've only had my 360 for a few days (bought it used on Craigslist), but I've been doing the same thing. Turn on the console with the controller, do some stuff on the dashboard for a few minutes, then open the disc tray (with the media remote) and pop in the game I want to play. When I'm done, I take the disc out and go to the dashboard for 3-4 minutes allowing the fans to continue to run to cool the system. Then I shut it off using the controller.

Maybe this helps, maybe it doesn't. It seems like a good idea, though.
