Ok, really playing with fire here. I expect more from the guys on OS so please leave your personal preference's aside.

The Show is being hailed by many as the best sports game ever, whether it be reviews or gamers. That's beside the point... part of their success is due to size of a BR disc, as I was told when I was at Sony Studios. There's no way they would be able to do what they are doing on the 360 because they need the extra disc space.

Since we know most games are being coded for the 360 and ported over, developers obviously are not taking advantage of the extra capacity on BR discs.

So... what are your thoughts on the topic? If the 360 had bigger discs as the norm, would we see better, more complete sports games? Is this just a testament to a group of talented developers? Or a combination of both?

this could be a possibility. it would help if the 360 had bigger disc capacity size but look at mvp baseball 2005! that was and is one of the best baseball games ever and thats on a last gen system.

Yeah, the smaller disc space is definitely a hinderance, as is the non-standard hard drive. Devs are getting pretty good mileage despite the limitations, though.

I don't think it's a problem right now. I haven't seen a sports game that was close to filling up the disc. NCAA '09 was 6.3GB. I never played Madden '09 so I don't know about that one. I believe College Hoops 2k8 was 6.4GB. most of them still have 2+ GB free space left. I know it's not a sports game, but Oblivion only used up 6.7 GBs and that game is huge.

in the future, it could be a problem though.

don't forget DVD's compression is a lot better than Blu-rays. a lot of times a game on a DVD is actually up to 6 times larger than it is on the disc. hence why a game like Lost Odyssey, that didn't use much if any compression, used 4 DVDs.

That's a good point solidice. The question is why are they not utilizing that extra space then.

Developers would have 7.95GB took work with, but the problem is a little over 1GB is taken up by security. This leaves developers with 6.8GB of total usable space. This is something Carmack has complained about and that he would really like to have that space back.

wow, over 1 GB for security? didn't expect that and it doesn't work well at that.

and with this info, I would guess disc space could be a problem. APF 2k8 was only 5.0GBs(most of the other sports games seem to hang around 6 to 6.8GBs), but it was a bare game. I could really seeing it being a problem with college sports games, being that there are so many teams and the fact that current-gen console are using high-def graphics.

Yes and no.

I do not believe that games like The Show can't be done on the 360, since the same game is basically done on a UMD disc. Therefore, I always call Sony's claims with that BS. On the flip side, if dev's had the extra space, I still don't see them using it. Do we honestly think Madden dev's would add extra commentary in? I mean, it's not the lack of space that makes the game suck.

Plain and simple, The Show's devs love their game along with their sport more than the other dev's and take pride in their realism. It could be a DS game, and it would still show IMO.
