Re: PS3 Repair and/or Death Thread

I've been having problems with LBP since I got it from Goozex about two weeks ago. The game will lock up within the first few minutes of gameplay every time and not always at the same point. I'm also having a few lockups in other games but they seem more random, however NCAA10 which I play a lot has no issues at all. I tested LBP in another system and it works fine which obviously tells me it's a problem with my PS3 (a launch 20GB).

The moral of the story is that now that the PS3 has dropped to $299, I'm going to rip open my machine and see if I can figure out whats going on. I'm hoping it's simply a matter of dust collected inside or something simple like that. While I'm sure I could, I really don't want to mess with replacing a Blu-Ray drive or something like that.

Anyway, I'll post my findings sometime in the next week or so... hopefully it won't be laced with expletives.

It had been playing fine since the last incident but after playing some today, I popped in Uncharted and it froze while loading and hasn't read a disc since. I've tried rebooting, resetting, restoring PS3 system, backing up and re-formatting, and still nothing. I bought mine used off Craigslist so there is no hope of sending it in to Sony. Does anyone know of a good repair place or service that I might send it too? I'm going to check in my area on Monday.

EDIT: Nevermind, I bought a new laser off ebay and am going to fix it myself.
I got my replacement laser and installed it yesterday and it works so far. I'll see if it lasts. I've heard some will work but then stop so we'll see, but so far so good.

How much did that cost and was it hard to replace?

Haven't ripped it open yet... still debating it. No, HDD is not full. I've got a 20GB and initially I formatted it with no improvement. I've since replaced it with a 250GB HDD and it's certainly not full now.
