1906 - MLB Year In Review
After 19 years of pennant drought in the National League stronghold of Chicago, victory at last was in sight. The rooters of the Chicago Cubs, the NL entry in that city since 1876, had not been able to reap the fruits of success since the summer of '86. After coming close only to falter and finish second the last three seasons, the city of Chicago finally had their title. And did they ever as the Cubs rolled over the National League and won by 15 games over the second place Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pittsburgh Pirates stayed with the Cubs as they headed into September only 8 games behind, but fell back farther as the Cubs continued to roll and the Pirates hit a cold streak in the middle of the month. The hitting attack was lead by Harry Lumley, who led the senior loop in average, batting .317, in home runs with 6 and in runs batted in with 115, winning the Triple Crown. On the mound, the Cubs were led once again by the arm of Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown, who won 30 games and had a 1.83 ERA. Frank Chance finished tied for second in home runs with 4, finished third in runs scored with 86 and led the NL in stolen bases with 47. In the American League, the New York Highlanders had their hands full with the St.Louis Browns and the Chicago White Sox breathing down their necks. When September rolled around, New York had a 6.5 game lead over St.Louis and a 7 game lead over Chicago. St.Louis had actually taken over the lead with 5 games remaining in the schedule but the Highlanders overtook them on the next to last day of the season and clinched the title on the last day. The Highlanders were led once again by the hitting of Mike Donlin, who won the AL's Outstanding Batter award, and by the pitching of Addie Joss, who won 24 games and also had a 1.85 ERA. The World Series looked to be a runaway as the Highlanders won the first three games, but the Cubs won the next two games before surrendering to the Highlanders in game six as the Highlanders won, 4 games to 2. Re: 1906 Awards & Things
Please note: Due to not being able to edit the first few posts in this thread, I will have to put the career leaders chart, as well as the others including the Hall of Fame, after each season right after the winter meetings. That is going to make this thread much longer than it should be.
Would you readers like to participate a little? You could be members of my "Veteran's Committee" for the Hall of Fame. If you see someone that retired and didn't make my Hall of Fame, but you think that they should belong, then you can tell me who that person is. If that player is in the actual Hall of Fame, then I will "induct" them. At least in my Hall of Fame, no players are banned. Some players in real life are banned, as you well know. Guys like Joe Jackson and Pete Rose. Last edited by doncoryell; 08-09-2007 at 10:05 PM. |

Re: A History of Major League Baseball (1901-????) - a "what if" scenario - ootp7
The "Babe" should be coming along soon. It'd be interesting to see which team picks him up and how good he'll be.
