Re: Penn State Nittany Lions (NCAA 09)
Penn State gets down in the trenches
While the team prepares for the Big Ten title game, the recruits keep pouring in STATE COLLEGE, PA - The Penn State campus is abuzz with the possibility of an outright Big Ten Championship. Michigan State, 6-1 in the conference, is the only challenger, making Saturday's game the de facto title game. In 2005 Penn State beat the Spartans and won the Big Ten's BCS bid, but they technically split the title with Ohio State, and the win over MSU was in East Lansing. Now, the student body of Penn State is ready. The anticipation is reaching a fevered pitch, as the Nittany Lions look to clinch the title all for themselves on their home field on senior day. And while all that is going on, Recruiting Coordinator Brian Kudron is monopolizing the market on star recruits. Up until now, Penn State's class had been mostly skill position or defense oriented. The only two offensive linemen had been guard Freddie Archer of New Jersey and David McGill of Ohio. That changed in a big way after Saturday's game against Indiana, when a quarter of star prospects committed to play for Penn State, including three of the best linemen in the nation. First though, Penn State landed another star safety, as Brad Wright (Ellicott City (MD) River Hill) surprised everybody and picked the Nittany Lions. Wright, the 94th-ranked player in the nation, had been visited Rutgers a month ago and named them his leader at the time, and did not back down from those statements. It was thought that even if Penn State rolled out the red carpet for him, he'd be a Scarlet Knight. "I honestly didn't expect it," Wright said. "I had pretty much been sold on Rutgers ever since I visited there. I didn't think there was anything Penn State could do to change my mind, but when coach Kudron led me out of the tunnel onto the field before the kickoff, and the crowd was doing their chants, I was blown away. Then Coach Paterno came up to me and asked me if there was any other place in America I'd rather be. After the game I called him and told him there wasn't." Wright joins Tyler Jackson and Avery Smith as safety commits for Penn State. But now for the biggest news recruiting-wise, both literally and figuratively. Out of all the star recruits Penn State has landed this year, the story of the recruiting year for the Nittany Lions revolves around Carl Pearson, the five-star offensive guard out of Philadelphia and the consensus #1 player in the nation. His teammate is fellow five-star Brennan Craft, a running back. Craft committed to Penn State after the first weekend of the season, and it was expected that Pearson would as well. Once he didn't though, some behind the scenes began to wonder if he was sold on Penn State, and many believed he was looking elsewhere as West Virginia, Notre Dame and Ohio State put the press on him. After the Indiana game, Pearson put it all to rest. "It was always Penn State," the 6'5, 299-pound lineman said. "I listened to other schools, and I visited a couple, but Penn State was never out of the #1 spot. The moment they offered me, I was a Nittany Lion. I told Coach Kudron I didn't want to make it public right away, I wanted to slow play it. But I was at almost every home game for them this year, and I talked with all the recruits I met, and the only school I ever talked to them about was Penn State." Two recruits in particular that Pearson got in the ear of were five-star tackle Chris Ford of Blue Island, Illinois and five-star guard Darrick Riley of Atchison, Kansas. Pearson, the #1 ranked guard, met Riley, the #2 ranked guard, when they both took their official visits for Penn State's game against Illinois. "It was exciting to meet a guy like Carl," Riley said. "You always like to meet other elite players in your class to see what they're like, and he's so personable. We hit it off when we visited together, and he kept calling me after that and just kept saying, 'Penn State, man. Penn State.' So I called him back the other day and I told him, 'You're right. Penn State.'" Ford was a trickier sell for Pearson. The top-ranked tackle in the nation seemed to be sold on Ohio State, but did take an official visit for Penn State's 45-20 win over Michigan. "I grew up a Buckeye, and I thought there was nothing that could keep me away from them," Ford said. "I met Carl there, he's at all their games, and I also met (five-star linebacker) Mario (Bates), who was taking his official. He told me basically the same thing I was thinking. He's an Ohio kid and he grew up all about Ohio State, but he told me the visit to Penn State opened his eyes. Next day, I saw he committed. I looked at all the other players they're bringing in, I mean, they're running away with the best class in the country, and it's not even close. It was tough to say no to the team I grew up with, but it would've been tougher to say no to Penn State. There's a buzz about their program right now. Carl's been going around calling everybody, even the committed recruits, telling us to be there on the sideline on Saturday when they win the conference championship. I told him I'd be there, and I'll be decked out in blue and white, because that's what I'll be wearing in college." |

Re: Penn State Nittany Lions (NCAA 09)
#10 Michigan State @ #5 Penn State Beaver Stadium State College, PA November 22, 2008 PSU comes up smelling like roses Lions run away from MSU after halftime, clinch Big 10 title & Rose Bowl STATE COLLEGE, PA - There was not a voice of dissent among the Penn State players and coaches. Not a single word about the BCS, or any talk of "deserving" anything like a shot at the national title in Miami. There were just roses. Roses clutched in gloved hands, roses extended into the sky, roses in the mouths of the players who earned them. Daryll Clark and Evan Royster led a second half blitz on the shellshocked Michigan State Spartans, who entered the game without their leader, RB Javon Ringer, who didn't dress because of an injury. The Spartans hung tough for a while, but Royster's 24 yard touchdown with only two seconds left in the first half triggered an avalanche, as a 10-10 tie was suddenly 17-10 at halftime, and from there it was all Penn State, as the Nittany Lions won the second half 28-3, and the Big Ten Championship, 45-13. "If this is it for me, and I dunno if it is, it's a hell of a way to go out," coach Joe Paterno said after the game, fueling speculation that this may be his final season as the head man in Happy Valley. In his final game at Beaver Stadium, senior Derrick Williams left the fans wanting more, as he bedazzled them with an 89 yard touchdown on a kickoff return, and a 27 yard touchdown catch down the right sideline on a 4th and 2 in the 3rd quarter that broke the Spartans' back at 31-13.
