Memphis Falls to TCU on Heartbreaking Game-Winning Field Goal, Missing Big 12 Championship

The Memphis Tigers’ dreams of a Big 12 Championship appearance came to a crushing halt Saturday night as TCU edged them out 27-24 with a game-winning field goal as time expired. The loss stings even more as Memphis was forced to play without senior star running back Arlington Maiden, who sat out due to a rib injury.

The game’s turning point came in the second half when freshman quarterback Kyle O’Malley threw a costly pick-six. Up to that point, the Tigers were in control, but the turnover flipped the momentum, giving TCU a 24-21 lead. Memphis managed just three points afterward to tie the game late, but their offense struggled to find its rhythm without Maiden in the lineup.

Head coach Chris Ingram addressed the decision to keep Maiden sidelined. “It was one of the hardest calls I’ve had to make,” Ingram said. “Arlington wanted to be out there, but his health and long-term well-being had to come first. We had confidence in the guys we put on the field, but unfortunately, we came up short.”

Despite their valiant effort, the Tigers fell victim to TCU’s efficient clock management on the final drive, leading to a game-winning field goal that eliminated Memphis from Big 12 title contention.

However, the Tigers’ season isn’t over. Sitting at 10-2 (6-2) and ranked #10 in the College Football Playoff rankings, Memphis is still firmly in the mix for a playoff berth in the 12-team bracket. While missing the conference championship stings, the Tigers have an opportunity to reset and prepare for the playoffs, where they will look to prove themselves on the national stage.

The loss may hurt, but the Tigers’ season isn’t defined by this game. With resilience and determination, Memphis still has a shot at making history in the postseason.

Ryan Puglisi: The 2028 Heisman Winner and a Story of Redemption

The college football world now has its newest two-time Heisman Trophy winner: Georgia quarterback Ryan Puglisi. The star signal-caller has etched his name alongside legends, becoming the first back-to-back Heisman winner since Lamar Jackson in 2016-2017. Puglisi’s 2028 campaign was nothing short of spectacular, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest college football players in recent memory.

Dominant Back-to-Back Seasons

Puglisi’s decision to return to Athens for another year proved to be a masterstroke. Last season, he put up jaw-dropping numbers: 4,160 passing yards, 42 touchdowns, and just nine interceptions, earning him his first Heisman. But his 2028 performance took things to an entirely new level.

This season, Puglisi threw for 4,090 yards with 47 touchdowns and only five interceptions. He guided Georgia to yet another SEC Championship and clinched a coveted spot in the College Football Playoff, cementing his status as the best quarterback in the nation.

Why He Stayed

After winning the Heisman in 2027, Puglisi had every reason to go pro. Projected as a top draft pick, he shocked the football world by choosing to return for his senior season. When asked about his decision, Puglisi explained, “It wasn’t about the NFL yet. We came up short last year, and that’s a feeling I couldn’t live with. I came back for my teammates, for Georgia, and for redemption.”

Eyes on the Prize

While individual accolades are meaningful, Puglisi has remained laser-focused on one goal: winning a national championship. Last season, Georgia fell short in the national title game, a loss that has fueled Puglisi and his teammates all year long. “Winning the Heisman is a blessing, but we’re not done. This is about finishing the job,” he said after accepting the trophy in New York.

Legacy in Athens

Ryan Puglisi’s impact on Georgia football goes beyond statistics. He’s become a leader, an icon, and a player whose name will forever be spoken in the same breath as Bulldogs greats like Herschel Walker. With a playoff berth locked in, Puglisi and Georgia are now just two wins away from capping off his legendary college career with the ultimate prize: a national championship.

The football world will be watching as Puglisi leads Georgia into the College Football Playoff, with a legacy already secured and one final chapter left to write.

Memphis Tigers Ready for First Round of CFB Playoffs Against Ole Miss

As the Memphis Tigers gear up for their 3rd appearance in the College Football Playoff, the road to the national championship begins with a high-stakes showdown on the road against Ole Miss. Ranked #9 in the nation, Memphis has overcome numerous challenges throughout the season, but the road to the playoffs hasn’t been easy.

The Road to the Playoffs

This season has been full of ups and downs for the Tigers, who’ve showcased their resilience in the face of adversity. After a heartbreaking loss to TCU knocked them out of Big 12 Championship contention, Memphis bounced back with impressive wins and ended the regular season with a 10-2 record, securing their spot in the 12-team playoff format. Despite their loss in conference play, Memphis is still in contention for the ultimate prize— a national title.

A Look at the Opponent: Ole Miss

Ole Miss presents a formidable challenge for the Tigers. With a potent offense and a stout defense, the Rebels will look to keep Memphis’ dynamic attack in check. But Memphis, with its balanced offense and a defense that has proven time and again it can rise to the occasion, is not going to back down.

Coach Chris Ingram had this to say about the challenge ahead:
"We know Ole Miss is a tough opponent, but we’ve got a great group of guys who are prepared for this. Our focus has been on execution—both offensively and defensively. We’ve worked hard all season to get to this point, and now it’s time to show what we’re made of on the big stage."

Key Players to Watch

QB Kyle O'Malley : After a season filled with ups and downs, O'Malley will need to be at his best against Ole Miss. The true Freshman has shown he can be a difference-maker, but consistency will be key.
"I know this is a huge moment for our team, but I’m focused on doing my job. We’ve got great guys around me, and I trust them to do their part too. It’s all about execution and staying composed." - Kyle O'Malley

RB Arlington Maiden: If healthy, Maiden could be the X-factor for Memphis. The senior running back has been a workhorse this season, and his ability to control the clock will be crucial against Ole Miss’ fast-paced offense.
"I’ve been waiting for this opportunity my whole career," said Maiden. "We’ve got a chance to do something special, and I’m ready to give it everything I’ve got for this team."

Defense: Led by standout players like Junior Defensive back Chester Spitzer, Memphis’ defense has kept the team in games, even when the offense struggled. They will need to be disruptive against Ole Miss' air raid attack.
"We know it’s going to be a battle, but we’ve got the pieces to stop them," Spitzer explained. "We just need to stick to our game plan and trust each other. If we do that, we’ll be in good shape."

What’s at Stake

This first-round matchup is not just another game; it's the start of what could be another historic playoff run for the Tigers. If Memphis can pull off a win on the road, they will continue to prove that they belong among the elite in college football. The pressure is on, but the Tigers have proven time and again that they can rise to the occasion.

Coach Ingram shared his excitement and pride in his team's achievements:
"This is a huge moment for the program, and I’m incredibly proud of what these guys have accomplished. But we’re not done yet. Our goal is to win this game and keep pushing toward the ultimate prize. It’s all about taking it one step at a time."

Final Thoughts

As Memphis prepares for their biggest game of the season, the entire city of Memphis is behind them. This is the culmination of years of hard work, and the Tigers are ready to show that they are a force to be reckoned with on the national stage. The game will be a test of grit, determination, and the will to win— all qualities the Tigers have shown throughout their incredible season.

"We’ve been waiting for a moment like this for a long time," said O'Malley. "Now, it’s time to show everyone what Memphis football is all about."

Stay tuned as Memphis looks to repeat history in the College Football Playoffs!

Memphis Wins a Nail-Biter at Ole Miss, Advances to the Sugar Bowl

In a game that lived up to the hype, the Memphis Tigers secured a hard-fought 27-21 victory over Ole Miss in the first round of the College Football Playoff. The win not only showcased the Tigers' resilience but also punched their ticket to the Allstate Sugar Bowl, where they’ll face #2 Georgia.

Defense Steps Up in the Clutch

With the game hanging in the balance, the Memphis defense delivered when it mattered most. Late in the fourth quarter, Ole Miss threatened to take the lead, but the Tigers’ defense forced a critical turnover on downs, shutting the door on the Rebels’ comeback attempt. This gritty defensive stand epitomized the Tigers’ determination and grit throughout the season.

Arlington Maiden's Heroics

Senior running back Arlington Maiden once again proved his worth, even while battling a rib injury that kept him out for much of the game. Despite being less than 100%, Maiden rushed for 111 yards on just 11 carries, including a clutch first down in the final minutes that sealed the win. His performance further cemented his status as one of the team’s most reliable playmakers.

Kyle O’Malley’s Breakout Performance

Freshman quarterback Kyle O’Malley continued to grow into his role on the big stage, throwing for 197 yards and three touchdowns. His poise and ability to make plays under pressure were key in keeping Memphis ahead against a tough Ole Miss defense.

Looking Ahead to Georgia

Next up for the Tigers is a formidable challenge against the #2 Georgia Bulldogs in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Known for their physicality and depth, Georgia will test Memphis in all phases of the game. Head coach Chris Ingram emphasized the importance of preparation, noting that the team will need to elevate its game to take down the SEC powerhouse.

“Georgia is an incredible team, but we’ve shown all season that we belong on this stage,” said Ingram. “It’s going to take a full-team effort, and I know our guys are ready for the challenge.”

A Season to Remember

With the win over Ole Miss, the Tigers continue their remarkable postseason run. While Georgia presents a daunting task, Memphis has proven time and again that they can rise to the occasion. Fans eagerly await what promises to be an electrifying showdown in New Orleans.

Memphis Tigers’ Defensive Coordinator Ted Conley Named Head Coach at Texas Tech

In a bittersweet moment for the Memphis Tigers family, we proudly congratulate our Defensive Coordinator, Ted Conley, on his new role as the head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Coach Conley’s impact on the Tigers has been nothing short of phenomenal. Since joining Memphis, his defensive strategies have been a cornerstone of the team’s success, including the 2027 National Championship victory and this season’s playoff run. Under his leadership, the Memphis defense has consistently ranked among the nation’s best, known for its tenacity, discipline, and game-changing plays.

Texas Tech is getting a coach with a proven track record, a relentless work ethic, and a passion for developing players both on and off the field. While his departure leaves big shoes to fill, we are excited to see Coach Conley take the next step in his career and bring his defensive prowess to the Big 12.

On behalf of the entire Memphis Tigers community, we thank Coach Conley for his years of dedication and wish him the best of luck in Lubbock. The Red Raiders are lucky to have him.

Once a Tiger, always a Tiger!

Memphis Season Ends in the Sugar Bowl with 6 Costly Turnover Mistakes

The Memphis Tigers’ College Football Playoff journey came to an unfortunate end in the Sugar Bowl, as they were defeated 31-20 by #2 Georgia. Despite a strong defensive effort, Memphis was undone by six costly turnovers — three interceptions and three fumbles — that allowed Georgia to seize control and ultimately secure the win.

The turnovers were the defining factor in the game, as Memphis struggled to maintain possession and capitalize on its opportunities. The Tigers' defense, which had been stellar throughout the season, forced six turnovers of its own, but the offense’s mistakes proved to be too much to overcome.

Senior RB Arlington Maiden, who had been a key contributor throughout the season, was one of the bright spots for Memphis in the loss. Maiden finished the year with 227 rush attempts, 1,542 rushing yards, and 13 touchdowns, capping off a remarkable individual season. His toughness and consistency helped carry the Tigers' offense, and he leaves a legacy as one of the program's standout players.

After the game, Coach Chris Ingram reflected on the loss with pride in his team’s efforts. “We made mistakes, and they cost us,” Ingram said. “But I couldn’t be prouder of these guys. They fought until the very end, and this season was something special. We’ll learn from this and continue to build on the foundation we’ve laid.”

Despite the defeat, the Tigers’ season was one of resilience and determination, from their thrilling run through the playoffs to their dominant regular-season performances. While the Sugar Bowl loss stings, it doesn’t diminish the remarkable achievements Memphis accomplished this year.

Though their playoff hopes ended in the quarterfinals, the Tigers’ fight in the Sugar Bowl showed just how far this program has come. Memphis will use this experience as fuel for the future, building on what has been an unforgettable season.

Re: College Football 25 - How Is Your Dynasty Going?

UCLA finished 10-3, we beat USC but lost again to Oregon in the Big 10 title game. It was rough as it went to double OT… I was watching the Oregon offense and when it came to us, it wouldn’t let me play. I had to watch as my QB tossed a game sealing pick. Annoying glitch but oh well.

We got a playoff spot and will face Clemson round 1.

I’m majorly annoyed. Boise State fired their coach but didn’t even consider me, as an Alumni. They went with the Fresno State HC which is bold to snipe a rival. I’m really let down about it to be honest. Wake Forest also fired their head coach after one season, but again I was not even considered.

I had the best offense in FBS in yards, 2nd in PPG by .1 point, A- prestige, and level 25 coach. Despite all this, I got HC offers from only two schools: Washington and Alabama. I suppose it’s possible I could get offers next week depending on who is hired where. Two schools are looking to hire away the UCLA head coach, I could potentially move up and stay right here.

It’s frustrating I wasn’t considered for so many jobs but got 2 high profile offers. I’m debating letting them go too. I absolutely will NOT be Alabama. I can’t stand them. Washington is okay, but I’m not a big fan and not sure I could stick out a full season there. I’m not sure if I’d get more offers, but I feel like I’d enjoy a second season as UCLA OC over a season as HC of either. So I may have another quick season as an OC unless the UCLA HC leaves and I get promoted.
