  • Waka Flocka - Love Dem Gun Sounds
  • Yo Gotti - Look in the Mirror
  • Yo Gotti - Touchdown
  • Waka Flocka - Hard in da Paint
  • Gucci Mane - Gucci Time
Sounds like a good list to me.

I say we scrap the worst songs category. It's not that I disagree with anything anybody has nominated, but I think some of the songs serve there purpose and come down more to personal taste.

you could say that about everything, plus it also serves as a "i wish this song never came out, i want to kill myself every time this came on the radio, i wish this rapper would die" thing...

its the ultimate personal taste thing, which is fine.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

Artist of Year
Joel Ortiz - Ortiz went crazy this calendar year. He dropped a dope album (Free Agent), a dope mixtape (Ortiz Manifesto), a FreEp (Farewell Summer), and over 50 other songs and freestyles that he killed with ill punch lines and off the wall flows. He worked with artists from the Slaughterhouse crew, to DJ Premiere, Novel, Maino, Ghostface, the Game, John Regan, Playboy Tre, Jean Grae, Mos Def, and more. Honestly a historic year worth of hip hop he unleashed on us
J. Cole
Quest
Joe Budden
XV

Album of Year
Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot - I slept on this for a month or two, then kept it on repeat for a long time after it got me through a long fantasy football draft. Insane production all around, dope guest features, and a bunch of songs that keep you noddin your head.
Eminem - Recovery
Statik Selektah - 100 Proof: The Hangver (added this one, took out Reflection Eternal. Forgot this came out in February)
The Roots - How I Got Over
Skyzoo and Illmind - Live from the Tape Deck

Mixtape of Year

J Cole - Friday Night Lights - Beginning to end, solid as hell. Really cemented Cole as a top 5 artist out right now in my mind, though I have the feeling his albums won't give us the same feeling that his sort of raw, unpolished in points mixtapes have done.
Royce 5'9 - Bar Exam 3
Quest - How Thoughtful
Budden - Mood Muzik 4
XV - Vizzy Zone

Disappointment Album/Mixtape of Year

Drake - Thank Me Later
Foreign Exchange - Authenticity
Ghostface - Apollo Kids
David Banner and 9th Wonder - Death of a Pop Star
Kanye - MBDTF

Rising Star

J Cole
XV
Quest
Nicki
Freddie Gibbs

more later

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

I find it interesting that you list Kanye as a not even close winner of Artist of the Year, but you don't think his album is one of the five best.

Did he put out a lot of other work that was unrelated to the album this year that I missed? I know a large portion of the Good Friday tracks ended up on the album...did I miss others?
