The difference between mainstream and underground is not specifically what they are talking about, it's how it's done. Like I hear somebody like Wiz Khalifa being really blunt and say something like 'im so nice, im so high, yea dawg'. Something really profound.

But an underground rapper like Elzhi twists that into "Floss Jewels, Flash Ice, hit the grass twice and get higher than a gas price." He's still saying "I got bling, money, whatever, and get high" but it's actually creative with the way he puts its. It's different than just saying "My jewelry so expensive, I'm so high."

And mainstream rappers other than Eminem really don't have the ability to connect their bars to tell a story, or do anything creative with their lyrics. The difference between mainstream and underground is how the music is written. There's more emphasis on the lyrics, the rhyme schemes, the flow, the delivery, the MC'ing aspect. The Art form itself.

But a lot of these mainstream rappers sound the same, have simple lyrics that anybody could write (Have you seen Gucci Mane's verses?), the music is made with a different goal.

That's the nerdy way to say it, but it is what it is. Mainstream rap doesn't suck because all they talk about is money and drugs. Have you heard that new Nas and Common joint? All they talk about is women. But they do it in a way that no mainstream rapper ever could. It's a dope song with great lyrics even though it is about nothing but women.

Had explicit experiences I shouldn't mention
for me getting girls turned a sport into addiction
powerful women playing the roles of submission"

That's just a simple Nas verse about women. Has Gucci Mane or Wocka Flocka written anything like that before? Haha no. Because it doesn't sell. Mainstream sounds the way it does, because it makes money.

Where as the typical mainstream rapper would be like "The girls all up on my D, big money stacks, got so many girls i'm so cool, snow" And people would listen to it and it would be a radio hit and the artist would make a lot of money.

And when I say mainstream, I mean people like Gucci Mane, Wocka Flocka, Birdman, Lil Wayne, and Drake to some extent. Eminem is mainstream but he's a lot different than them.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

So basically you're only applying the "mainstream" label to the mainstream (mainly southern considering your examples) rappers you don't like. Your picking and choosing makes no sense to me...well it kinda does on second thought. Nas and Common are very much mainstream and so is Em.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

Thats what YOU like though, thats not "the artform"

Rap is about expressing yourself....somewhere along the way, this idea got lost...people put these ridiculous labels on rappers....that they are "Real MC's" b\c they rap over soul beats and use metaphors.\

EDIT: doesnt matter though, lets get back to posting music.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

WOW The Carter 4 is bad BTW, and I enjoyed the first 3.....

This dude is not even trying any more....its like hes on his last page of punchlines

The best songs on the album were the interludes IMO, and im being serious (WTF happened to Shynes voice though) lol

Besides that and "Im Good" the album is very weak...im actually suprised at Waynes effort (or lack thereof)

MC and a rapper aren't the same thing.

You do realize that most of the guys you're listing are guys that have been trashed by most of us in this thread, right?

Besides, what music one person likes is completely different from the next person.
