Re: Star Trek: The Movie

Just finished watching the movie. I've never been a Trek fan although I've seen 1 or 2 of the Next Generation films. The trailer got me hyped up for this and it didn't disappoint. It was a fun and enjoyable movie. I agree that Kirk stumbled his way onto the Captain's seat rather than really earn it. One small gripe doesn't take away from the whole movie though.

I hope the next one is more serious with its tone, considering Trek is not just about space battles. BSG (at least for me) has raised the bar when it comes to story-telling in Sci-Fi. That said, I'm glad we got another Sci-Fi movie set in space. I can't recall the last time I've watched one other than Revenge of the Sith.

What got me was the total lack of reasoning as to why the character of Kirk, was given the reigns of a Star Ship. The movie attempted to show his rebellious nature, I get that, it attempted to show his pedigree (dad) I get that, but at no time during that movie was I convinced that he was captain material, other than him just needing to be captain (as directed by a character in the movie, I won't spoil it). When he gets to be captain at the end is was kind of anti climatic and some what empty. Other than that, the movie was o.k.

I won't even get into the whole, Spock poppin Ohura thing (are you freakin kidding me?) The real Spock, by nature and design, would have never had a relationship. That story arc was off and made no sense. It was pointless to the plot of that movie.

I am curious to see where they go with the future movies, but this was a good start, I guess.
Good analysis and this is coming from a guy that never got into Star Trek, including the TV show and movies. I liked the movie OK, wanted to like it more, but it just wasn't there.I thought the two leads were great but the story was missing something. 2.5 out of 4 STARS

To be fair, this is a much younger Spock than what you see in the original series. It's obvious that he is much closer to his human half at this point. Maybe future events or time/experience will have him shift more toward his logical Vulcan side.

What's the use of having a Vulcan if he's not going to be "Vulcan"? I can take him being more arrogant & defiant like he was when his mom was brought up. But they will really screw up if they make him some kind of romantic Cyrano or Quasimodo.
