I was so bad at screens that I went into scrimmage mode and practised them relentlessly. The main thing is that your linemen have to be fast enough to get in position before your back stops running. If he is stood still this leads to one of two things 1.)The back will be stood still and will be immediately tackled. or 2.) The DE will pick you off. I noticed that if you take too long letting the linemen get in position the DE reads it and will very often make the pick, I've seen it happen many times. Puja is correct that the easiest way to get it to work is using max passing and having reasonably mobile blockers.

Good point on having agile guards. Maybe the reason it took screens so long for me to develop while playing the last couple seasons is b/c Larry Allen is as slow as can be and isn't much of a pulling guard at all.
