Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 10)

For Ducks, it's simple: win and you're in
Oregon's Rose Bowl dreams come down to the Civil War at Autzen

EUGENE, OR - It doesn't get much simpler for the Oregon Ducks, and this is the scenario every single team in every sport wants to be in. A home game, with a win clinching a championship.

That's what will be on the line Thursday night at Autzen Stadium in the 113th edition of college football's Civil War, as the Oregon State Beavers travel to Autzen to face the Ducks. With a win, Oregon will clinch the Pac-10 championship and end USC's reign as conference champion. If the Ducks lose, the Trojans will win the conference with a win against Arizona on Saturday.

There is plenty of motivation for the visitors from Corvallis, however. It was a year ago when Oregon State's own Rose Bowl dreams were on the line in front of their home fans in the Civil War, and the Ducks fire bombed them 694 yards of offense in a 65-38 rout, humilating the Beavers and conquering Reser Stadium. Oregon State would like nothing more than to return the favor.

Both teams enter the game relatively healthy. LaMichael James is questionable for the Ducks, while Jamere Holland is expected to start. Both are recovering from abdominal injuries. For the Beavers, DE Kevin Frahm was lost for the season in OSU's first game with a foot fracture, and WR James Rodgers is questionable as he recovers from a torn pectoral muscle.

"Everybody understands what's at stake," Oregon coach Chip Kelly said. "This is a huge deal. Emotions are at their highest in rivalry games like this, and they've got the added incentive of revenge on their side. Our kids have had a great two weeks of practice, and we're excited to get out on the field in front of our home fans for the last time this season."

Ducks smell the roses
It's the fall of Troy as Oregon wins the Civil War and ends USC's reign atop the Pac-10

EUGENE, OR - Even though it was clear they were outgunned, the Beavers never made it easy for the Oregon Ducks.

For two and a half quarters, Oregon State's defense held down the fort against UO, forging a 3-3 stalemate. But the Ducks' resolve broke through, as Jeremiah Masoli threw two touchdowns late in the 3rd quarter. After that, Oregon held off the Beavers last gasp of desperation in the 4th and won, 24-17, to clinch the Pac-10 title and automatic BCS bid to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

"This is the culmination of all the hard work these young men have put in," head coach Chip Kelly said on the field afterward as the Ducks players danced around with roses in their mouths. "It's a great testament to the work ethic, drive and determination put in by these players to be called Pac-10 Champions."

While the Ducks are all but a lock for Pasadena (barring upsets in both the Big 12 and SEC title games), it is unlikely they will face the traditional Big 10 foe in the Rose Bowl. Big Ten champion Penn State is 12-0 and essentially assured of a bid in the National Championship Game, and the Big 10 does not have another BCS team this season.

Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 10)

Pac-10 Champions invade California
As they prepare to showcase their program on the grandest stage, the Ducks shine in the Golden State once again

EUGENE, OR - The word is spreading, possibly faster than anyone could have anticipated. But the grand vision Chip Kelly has for the Oregon program is quickly moving toward reality. The Ducks have supplanted USC as Pac-10 champion and will look to show out in Pasadena in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day. Meanwhile, the other part to that equation - becoming an elite recruiting power in the nation - is becoming reality as well, as in the wake of their emotional victory over Oregon State, the Ducks secured verbal commitments from three elite defensive prospects, all California natives, and one at each level of defense.

4-star defensive tackle Kenton Montgomery of Long Beach, 4-star cornerback Ray Webb of Tracy, and 4-star inside linebacker Rob Givens of Lompoc all made it official after the Civil War, committing to ace recruiter and co-defensive coordinator Brian Kudron, who made it his personal mission to go into California and pull out stars. All three players definitely qualify as stars, all ranked in the top 100 nationally. Montgomery, the #4 DT in the country, is #83 nationally. Givens is the #5 middle linebacker and #64 overall, and Webb is the #5 corner and #38 overall.

"I just felt really comfortable up there at Oregon," the 6'5, 322-pound Montgomery said. "There is a buzz around the program, you can sense the momentum increasing, and I wanted to be a part of that." As a star at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, Montgomery was an elite national recruit and turned down USC and UCLA to pick the Ducks.

The Ducks targeted several linebackers this year, and while many fell off the board, Rob Givens stuck around, and the Ducks fought off Arizona State, USC (no offer) and Notre Dame (no offer) to secure his services. At 6'1, 226 pounds, Givens is physically ready to play, but will get a year of tutelage under star MLB Casey Matthews, assuming he returns for his senior year.

Webb was perhaps the biggest surprise. The 5'11, 182-pound cornerback had been considered a strong lean to California, but the Ducks' strong finish combined with Cal faltering badly to a 7-5 finish turned the tide.

"I grew up a Cal fan," Webb admitted. "I always thought I'd end up going there, but the way the season played out, I think Oregon's on the rise, and I want to play in the Rose Bowl, and I think they're gonna be there a lot." Webb turned down scholarship offers from Cal, USC and Texas to choose Oregon.

Despite the commitment of Webb, the Ducks remain in hot pursuit of fellow 4-star, top 100 cornerback Mario Hill of Anaheim, who will also choose between the Ducks, Trojans and Bears.

Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 10)

Will King crown the Ducks?
#1 DE visits Eugene once again, begins to formulate a process

EUGENE, OR - This is, unquestionably, becoming the best recruiting class in Oregon history. They have assembled a deadly quartet of playmakers on offense (QB Jarrett Jones, HB Patrick Jackson, WR Denzel Jefferson and TE James Johnson) and are collecting the elite defensive difference makers needed to stay at the top (defensive linemen Kenton Montgomery, Jesse Johnson and Brett Thompson, linebacker Rob Givens, cornerback Ray Webb and safeties James Alston and Lionel Holland).

But the cherry on top, the crown jewel, remains at large.

5-star Portland defensive end Michael King made his third trip to Eugene for the Civil War, this time on an official visit. Considering his numerous trips in the past, it isn't surprising that he didn't have anything overly new to report.

"It was more of the same," King said. "That's not a bad thing. I love everything Oregon has to offer, and I feel comfortable there since I've been there a few times now. There are no surprises."

One thing that has changed is the addition of 4-star defensive ends Jesse Johnson and Brett Thompson to the Oregon class.

"I talked about that with the coaches," the 6'7, 242-pound King said. "They said the addition of those guys doesn't change how they feel about me. They told me I've got a spot whenever I want to take it, and I don't mind them recruiting other guys. I believe in my own abilities, and there's competition everywhere. I don't want anything to be handed to me."

As for when he will actually make a decision, King is starting to zero in.

"I'll announce either sometime in January or at Signing Day in February. I like Oregon, Texas, Oklahoma, Michigan and USC, and I'm going to give all those coaches time to do in-home visits and stuff like that. I want to make sure everyone on my final five has a fair shot."
