2013 Michigan State Spartans Preview

Spartans Offense
returning starters - 5

Quarterbacks
1. Joe Boisture 6'6'' 206lbs (RS)Junior
2. Vince Collier 6'0'' 195lbs (RS)Freshman
3. Clint Williamson 6'3'' 217lbs (RS)Junior
Vince Mack 6'3'' 219lbs Junior

Grade - C+
Boisture had a pretty decent season last year playing ball control, but this year Coach Young might let him loose and then we will get to see what this kid can really do.

Halfbacks
1. Edwin Baker 5'9'' 204lbs (RS)Senior
2. Nick Hill 5'7'' 187lbs (RS)Junior
3. Noah Walker 5'11'' 199lbs (RS)Sophomore
4. James Nash 6'1'' 214lbs (RS)Sophomore

Grade - C+
Caper is gone and gonna be dearly missed, but Baker will to a good job filling in. Baker is more of a scat back, fast and agile, and Caper was more of a power back.

Fullbacks
1. Tony Evans 6'2'' 261lbs Sophomore
2. Alex Williams 6'2'' 261lbs Sophomore

Grade - D
Tony Evans is the unsung hero of the Spartans offense, he played a key role in Capers 2,000 yard rushing performance. Evans greatly improved in the off-season, don't be surprised if he gets some carries this year

Wide Receivers
1. Jeremy Langford 6'0'' 187lbs (RS)Junior
2. Keith Mumphery 5'11'' 204lbs (RS)Junior
3. Lance Mansfield 6'0'' 74lbs Sophomore
4. Donald Spencer 6'2'' 212lbs (RS)Senior
5. Robert Wilson 5'11'' 167lbs Junior
6. Thomas Anderson 6'4'' 178lbs Sophomore
Noah Cason 6'2'' 176lbs (RS)Sophomore
Ernest McBride 6'3'' 188lbs (RS)Sophomore
Blake Prince 5'10'' 177lbs Freshman
Adam Perkins 6'0'' 170lbs Freshman
Jason Suggs 6'3'' 174lbs Freshman

Grade - C
There are some very good Yac gainers here in Jeremy Langford and Keith Mumphery. Also, Mansfield is a good possession receiver.

Tight Ends
1. Chase Godfrey 6'5'' 254lbs Junior
2. Cameron Taylor 6'7'' 221lbs Junior
3. Alex Williams 6'3'' 241lbs (RS)Sophomore

Grade - C-
Some fans were worried about the departure of Sims and who was gonna replace him. Well, MSU went out and got a very good Juco Tight End who is just as good as Sims.

Tackles
1LT. Skyler Schofner 6'7'' 294lbs (RS)Junior
1RT. Brady Thompson 6'6'' 281lbs Junior
2LT. Trey Williams 6'7'' 332lbs (RS)Sophomore
2RT. Dave Hunt 6'4'' 325lbs (RS)Sophomore
3LT. Michael Fields 6'5'' 313lbs Junior
3RT. Steve Lowe 6'7'' 326lbs (RS)Freshman
Dave Sims 6'1'' 288lbs Freshman

Grade - C-
The offensive line was hit hard by Graduations, but still has some solid players in Skyler Schofner and a very good Juco player in Brady Thompson.

Guards
1LG. Micajah Reynolds 6'5'' 313lbs (RS)Senior
1RG. Travis Jackson 6'4'' 283lbs (RS)Junior
2LG. Ryan Ward 6'5'' 292lbs (RS)Freshman
2RG. Larry Bryant 6'3'' 298lbs Freshman
Joey Ward 6'1'' 285lbs Freshman
Kevin Smith 6'4'' 297lbs Freshman

Grade - D+
This is the Spartans weak point on the team. It's going to be harder for them to run up the middle, which is what they made their living on last year.

Centers
1. Nate Klatt 6'4'' 298lbs (RS)Senior
2. Brock Miller 6'2'' 296lbs (RS)Sophomore

Grade - C+
Klatt adds some stability to the interior line and he will have to be playing hard to help the Halfbacks get those short yardage gains.

Spartans Defense

returning starters - 6

Defensive Ends
1LE. Tim Brown 6'6'' 211lbs Sophomore
1RE. William Gholston 6'7'' 255lbs (RS)Junior
2LE. Taylor Calero 6'3'' 240lbs (RS)Junior
2RE. Marcus McCray 6'3'' 263lbs (RS)Sophomore

Grade - C+
Tim Brown is a good looking young prospect and will play on the opposite side of one of the best players to come through MSU. This dangerous tandem will reek havoc on opposing Quarterbacks all season.

Defensive Tackles
1. Blake Treadwell 6'3'' 283lbs (RS)Senior
2. Anthony White 6'3'' 321lbs (RS)Junior
3. Christian Slaughter 6'1'' 273lbs Sophomore
Robert Mosley 6'6'' 320lbs Sophomore
George Thompson 6'4'' 273lbs Freshman

Grade - C+
With Jerel Worthy gone the Spartans need another play maker on the inside of this defensive line, it will e interesting to see who steps up and produces.

Outside Linebackers
1LOLB. Jeremy Gainer 6'1'' 237lbs (RS)Senior
1ROLB. Chris Norman 6'1'' 232lbs (RS)Senior
2LOLB. Justin Wilson 6'0'' 225lbs (RS)Junior
2ROLB. Jamie Austin 5'11'' 224lbs Sophomore
3LOLB. Cedric Robinson 6'2'' 184lbs (RS)Freshman

Grade - C+
Norman is back for his Senior year and is looking stronger and faster than ever, he will more than likely be in the opponents backfield a lot. Also, Jeremy Gainer will get his first college start and looks poised to prove he can play as good as any of the MSU Linebackers.

Middle Linebackers
1. Tyquan Hammock 6'0'' 256lbs (RS)Senior
2. Max Bullough 6'3'' 231lbs (RS)Junior
3. Clint Poole 6'3'' 217lbs (RS)Sophomore

Grade - B-
Tyquan Hammock is also back for his Senior year, making this one of the best defensive backfields in the Big Ten.

Corner Backs
1. Chase Parker 5'9'' 178lbs (RS)Senior
2. Justin Fry 6'1'' 175lbs (RS)Sophomore
3. Mylan Hicks 5'11'' 185lbs (RS)Junior
4. LaRue Walker 5'9'' 181lbs Sophomore
5. Kurtis Drummond 6'2'' 201lbs (RS)Junior
Brett McGill 6'1'' 180lbs (RS)Sophomore
Chris Smith 5'11'' 174lbs (RS)Freshman

Grade - C
The biggest play maker in the Spartans secondary, Chase Parker, will be lining up every week on the opposing teams best receiver. Also, Justin Fry has finally moved up to the second Corner Back slot and is more than ready to produce. Hopefully, these two will improve on MSU's very sub par pass defense last year.

Free Safeties
1. Isaiah Lewis 5'11'' 193lbs (RS)Junior
2. Mickey Mayfield 6'2'' 205lbs Freshman
Willie Mangum 5'11'' 173lbs Junior

Grade - C-
Lewis is also back and ready to win the Big Ten Championship. If Lewis wants that to come true he will have to stop big plays and cover deep routes, which doesn't look like it will be a problem for him this year.

Strong Safeties
1. Shawn Davis 6'3'' 200lbs Junior
2. David Walton 6'3'' 215lbs (RS)Freshman

Grade - C-
With Jairus Jones playing football on Sundays, Shawn Davis will have his chance to step up and prove himself. But judging by the team scrimmage he isn't as good as Jones and will require help from this front seven to stop Half Backs.

Spartans Special Teams
returning starters - 1

Kickers
1. Casey Long 5'11'' 177lbs Freshman
2. Jonathan Mason 6'1'' 178lbs (RS)Freshman

Grade - C
Casey Long is no Dan Conroy, but he is a promising prospect who could progress to Conroy's legacy.

Punters
1. Jonathan Mason 6'1'' 178lbs (RS)Freshman

2. Casey Long 5'11'' 177lbs Freshman

Grade - C
With Conroy gone Mason will step up and prove he has a big leg also.

Kick Returners
1. Keith Mumphery 5'11'' 204lbs (RS)Junior
2. Isaiah Lewis 5'11'' 193lbs (RS)Junior

Grade - B-
Mumphery will be returning kicks once again, this time along side Lewis. Making them one of the fast returning tandems in the NCAA.

Punt Returners
1. Keith Mumphery 5'11'' 204lbs (RS)Junior
2. Jeremy Langford 6'0'' 187lbs (RS)Junior

Grade - B-
Baker is taking over the starting Half Back job so Mumphery will be returning punts also, using his speed to give the Spartans a shorter field.

Overall Grade - C+
MSU has their highest pre-season ranking in a very long time and the fans have high hopes, but it's gonna be tough without Caper and the solid offensive line last year. Not so fast though, Boisture is improve and so is the receiving corps. Plus, one of the best defenses in the Big Ten has most of their star players returning. Don't be surprised if MSU rises in the rankings fast and wins the Big Ten...... Let the 2013 season begin!!
