Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 11)

Arizona @ #6 Oregon
Autzen Stadium
Eugene, OR
November 20, 2010

Ducks snowblow Arizona with wild 4th
In the frigid cold, Oregon sends its seniors out as winners at Autzen

EUGENE, OR - Visually, it was quite a sight, Oregon's typically striking uniforms contrasted against Arizona's red and white display against the backdrop of a driving snowstorm at Autzen Stadium.

For three quarters, the Autzen faithful was less than amused, as the Ducks were sloppy and uninspired.

That changed in the 4th, as the Ducks roared to life, their defensive line's endurance finally winning the day against Arizona's offensive front. The Ducks racked up six of their seven sacks on the day in the final quarter, and recovered three fumbles in the final frame as well, en route to a 28-0 period and a 46-21 win on Senior Day.

"It was very important for us to send our seniors out as winners in their final game at home," Chip Kelly said. "Guys like Casey Matthews, Jeff Maehl, DJ Davis, Spencer Paysinger, Kenny Rowe, Jordan Holmes, Bo Thran, Brandon Bair, CE Kaiser...these individuals have meant so much to us, and have been so important to our success over the past couple years. Losing for the last time in front of our great fans here in Eugene would've been unacceptable, and we played like it in that fourth quarter."

With the win, the Ducks now sit at 7-1 in Pac-10 play, with only USC capable of catching them. If the Ducks win the Civil War next week in Corvallis, they will win the Pac-10 outright and represent the conference in the BCS (most likely the Rose Bowl) for the second consecutive season.

Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 11)

Ducks rally from behind for Cooper
Local QB has a last second change of heart

EUGENE, OR - After missing out on 4* wide receiver Bryant Hart from Salem to in-state rival Oregon State, most figured the Ducks would look outside their home state's borders for their entire 2011 recruiting class.

Midway through the season that began to change, as the Ducks ramped up their recruitment of West Linn QB Jon Cooper, the 243rd-ranked player in the nation and 18th-ranked quarterback.

The only problem was rival Washington had been on Cooper from the beginning, and when Dominique Love jumped aboard Oregon's recruiting class, the prospects for Cooper becoming a Duck seemed to dwindle even further. Until his official visit to Eugene for the game against Arizona, that is.

"I always had a soft spot in my heart for Oregon," Cooper said. "They're the local team, but they weren't showing much interest in me, so I figured they were going in another direction and I needed to as well. Once they offered I started to get interested again, and once I visited they convinced me that they really wanted me to be their second quarterback in their class. So I committed."

The 6'3, 227-pound Cooper turned down Washington, Cal, and Boise State. His speed doesn't match Love's, but he's more advanced as a passer.

Meanwhile, the Ducks appear to be closing in on several other prospects they've been pursuing for some time. 4* WR Derrick Carter of Ruston (LA) appears to be inching toward a decision, with the Ducks near the top of his list, along with Boise State and Ole Miss. 4* athlete Steven O'Donnell from Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek, California is also close to committing, with Oregon, USC, and UCLA as his final three. He visited Oregon for the Washington game.

Others who have narrowed their choices down and could be committing soon:

3* DE Dion Bowling, 6'7, 245, Newark (CA): Oregon, Cal, Stanford
3* TE Jason Gant, 6'4, 257, Lacey (WA): Oregon, Washington
3* TE (JUCO) Andrew Hall, 6'6, 254, South Gate (CA): Oregon, Boise State, Auburn
3* TE Alex Justice, 6'6, 225, Kingsbury (NV): Oregon (no offer), Nevada, Arizona, Stanford, Boise State
3* WR Michael Nicholson, 5'11, 187, Inglewood (CA): Oregon (no offer), Cal, Stanford
3* WR (JUCO) Dan Gilmore, 6'4, 190, Napa (CA): Oregon, UCLA, Oklahoma State

Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 11)

#3 Oregon @ Oregon State
Reser Stadium
Corvallis, OR
November 27, 2010

A rosy repeat
Ducks fend off the Rodgers brothers to repeat as Pac-10 champions

CORVALLIS, OR - Unlike the previous two Civil Wars, this one was lopsided on paper, as the Beavers, ravaged by injury and terrible QB play all season, were bottomed out at 3-8, their season and goals long flushed down the drain.

But they relished the opportunity to play spoiler for their most hated of rivals, and for three quarters, they were up to the task.

But in the end, the heart of the Pac-10 champions won the day, and the Oregon Ducks pulled away from their in-state rivals to win the Civil War for the third year in a row and repeat as outright Pac-10 Champions with a 39-25 win at Reser Stadium.

The Ducks rode LaMichael James like never before, giving the diminutive speedster a workmanlike 39 carries for 205 yards and three touchdowns. He was Oregon's main, and at times only, source of offense, as the Beavers bottled up Darron Thomas with a relentless assault that resulted in six sacks and only 10 net yards rushing for the quarterback. And even then, Thomas had the last laugh. Midway through the 4th, seconds after the Ducks had taken a 32-25 lead, Cliff Harris intercepted Ryan Katz, and on the next play, Thomas went playaction and threw perhaps his best pass of the season - a laser down the middle of the field on a post route to Jeff Maehl, with just enough touch on it to get it over the linebacker but enough zip to rifle it in between the converging safeties. Maehl caught it and fell across the goalline for a 34 yard touchdown and the dagger.

James and Jacquizz Rodgers put up a valiant battle for the Beavers. Quizz ran for 116 yards, and James scored all three of Oregon State's touchdowns, one by rushing and two by receiving, including a monstrous 80 yard catch and run that cut off Oregon's momentum in the third quarter at the knees.

Now the Ducks will wait, sitting in the tenuous #3 spot in the BCS rankings. The possibility exists for them to jump ahead of #2 TCU, but it seems remote. Chip Kelly wouldn't bite after the game.

"We're very, very happy and proud to go back to the Rose Bowl," Oregon's head coach said. "That's the #1 goal of every team in this conference, to emerge on top and spend New Year's in sunny southern California. The Rose Bowl is the pinnacle of this sport, as far as I'm concerned, and to go back there for a second straight year is an honor and a privilege. All that other computer stuff, you people can talk about it on your own time. We're Pac-10 champions again, and we're going to celebrate it."

If the Ducks should be sent to Pasadena, they will encounter a rematch with Ohio State, who will represent the Big 10 in the Rose Bowl again. The Buckeyes beat the Ducks 26-17 in last year's Rose Bowl.
