Re: Beginner Dynasty

Lobos Dominate The Cowboys

It Was All New Mexico Today

Albuquerque, NM --
Last season New Mexico took it too Wyoming. This year the same result as the Lobos cruised to a victory. Tarean Austin had one of the best game of his career as he earned player of the game award with his 9-18 203 yds 3 TD performance. Even more impressive for the sophomore was the fact that he did not have any turnovers a problem he has struggled with. One of his touchdowns was a perfectly executed play fake. Faking the handoff to Dennis, Austin would be given enough time to hit a wideopen Thomas down the sideline for a 50 yd TD pass.

Thomas Sprints For A 50 yd TD

In the second half New Mexico's running game took over. Demond Dennis rushed for 129 yds on 20 carries and a TD. He continuously gashed the Cowboys defense especially in the 3rd. Dennis didn't get many carries in the 4th as Coach Redfoot mass subbed his 2nd team offense and defense in late to finish the game out.

Dennis Shakes A Defender During His 55 yd TD Run

The offense wasn't the only side of the ball that was getting things done. The defense picked off Wyoming junior QB Austyn Carta Samuels 3 times. Two of those picks were returned for TDs. One by Anthony Hooks who the past 2 season has become more known for his dropped INTs than actually making the play. It was even more special to the senior when he took it back all the way in the 2nd quarter to give the Lobos a 17-7 lead at that point.

Samuels Pass Is Picked Off By Senior Anthony Hooks And Taken Back For 6

New Mexico fans got a glimpse at the future of the team when Coach Redfoot subbed in the 2nd string for the final 4 minutes of the game. No one stood out more than true freshman corner Charlie Wade. The 3 star recruit out of Lufkin, TX got his first real action of his career and he made the most of it. Wade recorded a sack, INT and a TD. He looked comfortable out their and showed good quickness and ball skills. Should be exciting to see how he develops over the next four years.

Final Score: Wyoming 14 at New Mexico 52

After the game Coach Redfoot was happy with his team's performance. "Glad to see us come out and take over a game. Really proud of Austin. I've been hard on em ever since I got here and today is an example why. He has the ability to be a very good QB he's just gotta realize it himself." The Lobos moved back to .500 at 3-3 and over .500 in MWC at 2-1. Wyoming however fell to 4-3 (1-2).

New Mexico's Recruiting 2011 Class
Week 1 Commits
C (#55) Nathan Kirk ** 6'3" 278 lbs BALANCED Stephenville, TX

TE (#45) Terrance Perry *** 6'6" 229 lbs BLOCKING Uvalde, TX

OLB (#54) J.D. Jackson *** 6'2" 198 lbs RUN STOPPER Clovis, NM

DE (#93) Morris Rogers *** 6'2" 230 lbs RUN STOPPER Allen, TX

Week 7
ATH (#17) Brian Curtis **** 6'0" 202 lbs ATHLETE University Park, NM

CB (#24) Gary Scott *** 6'0" 182 lbs HARD HITTER Las Cruces, NM

There was another reward besides getting back to .500 for pounding Wyoming and that was picking up two outstanding recruits. Last season Coach Redfoot but an emphasis on owning New Mexico. Not a hotbed for talent, but still producing some quality talent Coach Redfoot and his staff brought in 4 of the 8 D1 potential player in New Mexico but missed out on the number one prospect. This season Coach Redfoot talked four star athlete and the top prospect in the state to come to New Mexico. This was a huge victory as not only did Coach Redfoot get his first 4 star commit but he also beat out Oklahoma State for Curtis's signature. Curtis is expected to play on the defensive side of the ball somewhere in the secondary. Scott is another talented recruit. He pack a punch in his stout frame. With Hooks graduating next season along and three juniors on scholly at CB position there will be a chance for Scott to play pretty soon.

New Mexico played at home for their 4 of their first 6 games. The Lobos got off to a real slow start losing back to back heartbreakers and falling all the way to 1-3 but have rebounded with two straight wins. The key to the turnaround has been QB play and defensive line play. Austin who lost his starting job has now seized it back after back to back well played games. On the defensive side of the ball Johnathan Rainey and Ugo Uzodinma have raised their level of play and gotten pressure on opposing QBs. Carmen Messina has put together another monster year. The senior MLB is once again leading the country in solo tackles and it's not even close.

To finish the season the Lobos have only 2 games at home. The rest will be on the road including a 3 game road trip. It will be important for Austin to continue his improvement if New Mexico wants to finish strong. The sophomore QB must take good care of the ball the rest of the way for the Lobos to be successful. So far this year the Lobos offensive line has been solid but not great. They have opened some holes for the running game but have struggled giving Austin and Holbrook a solid pocket. That will also need to change for the Lobos to have a great second half of the season.

No love for the ACC even though they have 3 undefeated teams. This week one of them will be unscathed no longer as Virginia Tech and Clemson clash. Alabama has recently lossed Richardson but their smothering defense has kept them on top. Watch out for Boise State. They made it to the big game last year and fell short losing to TCU. They want revenge and are waiting in the wings.

USC finds themselves in the hunt along with Bama and Oklahoma for many of these recruits. What is really interesting is ATH Zach Kelly is expected to pick Fresno State anytime now. That would be the Bulldogs highest ranked committ ever. The top 25 is dominated with ATH. Should be interesting to see where they all land by Feb. 2nd.

Thanks man! Glad to hear there are a few people following and I'm not just talking to my self haha!

Also any tips or suggestions from anyone lurking to make this any better are always welcomed. I think I like doing the picture for each quarter along with a summary instead of just a long writeup and box score at the end because entering in all the info for the box score gets annoying

Should have the SDSU game played and up by tonight

Re: Beginner Dynasty

Another Game Another Thriller

SR Kicker James Aho Proved Why He's Nicknamed Iceman

Albuquerque, NM --
In New Mexico's previous 6 football games only 2 were blowouts. Opening day thumping taken by Georgia and last week's thumping of Wyoming. This week proved to be the most exciting one of the season as the San Diego State Aztecs 5-3 (2-2) came into town. Last year the Aztecs scored 2 defensive TDs and QB Ryan Lindley lit up the Lobos secondary on their way to a 31-24 victory. This year they returned to University Stadium hoping for a repeat performance. They brought some familiar faces in Ryan Lindley, WR Dominique Sandifer and SS Brandon Davis. Also sophomore RB Ronnie Hillman was one year older and hoping to make a bigger impact this week. New Mexico was riding high after dismantling the Wyoming Cowboys last week and hoped to extend their winning streak to 3 and exact a little revenge for last year's close loss. It turned out to be a barn burner of a game.

After 3 punts to start the half (2 by San Diego State and 1 by New Mexico) the game finally saw its first score. New Mexico was given great field position thanks to special teams and defense. On the Aztecs 2nd possession of the game they were forced to start from the 9 after a beautiful Ben Skaer punt. The Lobos D forced a quick 3 and out and a punt from the Aztecs own edzone. Lamaar Thomas made a quick spin move and returned the ball to the 34 yd line. There the Lobos would go to work. Austin would hit sophomore Myles Daughtry on a quick out who would race down the sideline for a 27 yd gain. From the 7 Dennis would pound the ball 3 straight times until he found paydirt. And just like that 7-0 Lobos. But the Aztecs would come right back. Junior QB Ryan Lindley would make 2 long pass plays to set up the Aztecs nicely inside the redzone. The 2nd big pass play was impressive pocket presence by the SDSU QB. Ugo Uzodinma and Reggie Ellis would come charging through the Aztecs offensive line. Lindley would duck under both men, then rise up and fire a dart to his favorite target and bane of New Mexico, Dominique Sandifer who would then race all the way inside the 20. Last year Sandifer went for almost 100 yds on 7 catches. On 3rd and goal Sandifer would beat the Lobos secondary again this time for a 1 yd TD. 7-7. The Lobos would be on the move but the quarter would end on a sour note as the final play would be a sack. The Aztecs D especially nose guard Jerome Long would harass Austin all day earning them 5 sacks for their effort.

Dennis Muscles His Way In For The Score

The first play of the 2nd half would also start poorly for the Lobos offense as Austin would again be sacked this time for huge loss and setting up a ridiculous 3rd and 34 and putting them out of field goal range. But the sophomore QB would buckle down and hit junior stud WR Ty Kirk on the seam route for a big 31 yd gain. Although it came up short of first down it did put New Mexico easily in FG range and Aho would come through with a 32 yd kick. 10-7 Lobos. The rest of the quarter would be a defensive stalemate. Lindley and the Aztec offense were unable to get anything going. Even worse their outstanding young tailback Hillman would suffer an abdominal tear early in the 2nd quarter. Later the Aztecs medical staff would report that he will be out for no fewer than 4 weeks. New Mexico meanwhile did find life on one of their possessions. Austin maneuvered the ball wonderfully down field when he would make a big mistake. Trying to lead Daughtry into the endzone, Austin would overthrow his man and none other than SS Brandon Davis would be there to intercept it. Davis last year recorded 6 tackles 2 of them for loss along with recovering a fumble and taking it all the way back for 6. However the Aztecs would do nothing with it and the Lobos couldn't mount another attack. The half would end with the score at 10-7.

In the 3rd quarter Brady Hoke's team would find some offense. After a quick 3 and out for the Lobo offense, the Aztecs would get great field position thanks to a solid return. Then Lindley would convert twice on third down, one of the passes putting him over 2000 yds on the year. The big blow would come when backup RB Walter Kazee would spin away from Carmen Messina and outrun the rest of the New Mexico defense to the endzone giving the Aztecs their first lead. 14-10. The Lobos would of course respond. Austin and company would put together a powering drive. It would go 13 plays eating up 66 yds and taking an incredible 4:33 off the clock. But just like all season they struggled to finish it as it would die inside the 20 resulting in a 28 yd Aho FG. 14-13 Aztecs. San Diego State would come right back. Moving the ball well through the air and especially on 3rd down. In fact the final play of the third would be a 3rd down conversion pass to the Aztecs TE taking them inside the New Mexico 20.

Kazee Leaves Lobo Defenders In His Wake On His Way To A 20 yd Score

The 4th would turn out to be the most exciting quarter of the season. It would start with the Aztecs finishing their drive off with a pass to redshirt freshman WR Ezell Ruffin for a 5 yd TD pass. 21-13 San Diego State. With just over 5 minutes to play, New Mexico would look to drive and this time finish it with a TD. The 2nd play of the drive was a play fake pass to TE Lucas Reed who earned his first career 100 yd receiving performance. The big man would rumble into Aztec territory. The Lobos would be stopped on the next 3 plays resulting in a crucial 4th down conversion attempt. Coming into the day starting RB Demond Dennis had no catches but 4 drops. For some reason Coach Redfoot would put the fate of the game on the junior's unreliable hands but Dennis would come through. With 8 yds to go Austin would hit his tailback out of the backfield on a swing pass. No Aztec defenders were near as they obviously didn't see Dennis as a threat in the passing game. The junior would make them pay picking up a crucial first down. Then on the following 3rd and 3 the Lobos would again come through. This time Tarean Austin would find a lane and call his own number going all the way down to the 2 yd line on the scramble. Then Demond would do what he does best and power into the endzone. 21-19 now with Aztecs still up. Coach Redfoot would decide to go for 2 hoping to tie the game up. Austin would look to pass but again recognize he could scramble and race for the far pylon. An Aztec defender would try and beat em there, but the sophomore QB wouldn't be stopped as he dived over the pylon for 2 pts and a tie game! 21-21.

Austin Converts On Crucial 2 pt Conversion With Great Dive

But now San Diego State had the ball and over 3 minutes to do what they want. The past 2 drives the Aztecs had gone 7-7 on 3rd downs. The Lobos defense had been unable to stop Ryan Lindley from converting through the air and the speedy Aztec receivers were burning the Lobos secondary especially Lobo defenders Ravonne Carter and Jamar Lyles who were seeing more time due to an earlier injury to Emmanuel McPhearson knocking him out of the game. Before taking the field Carmen Messina would huddle the boys up and give em a speech. After the game Messina said he simply told em, "Let's get a damn stop!" And get a stop they did. After picking up one first down the Lobos defense found that first half swagger stuffing one run and breaking up two passes. The Aztecs were forced to punt.

So with only 2 min left it was time for Austin to see if he could lead the winning drive or if the game would go into overtime. On 2nd down, Long would again beat Farrell off the ball and come charging in on Austin. Tarean however would slide off the tackle, set his feet and deliver a strike to Lucas Reed. Reed would ramble into Aztec territory. Just outside of FG range Austin would again go to the air this time throwing a laser over the middle to Daughtry who would be tackled on the 22 yd line. The Lobos would then attempt to eat up clock. Dennis would pick up 4 and put the ball in the middle of the field. The Lobo offense would have to run one more play before kicking. Dennis instead of just settling for small gain decided to give Aho an even better chance. Making a slick cut, the junior tailback would plunge through the Aztec defense and fight all the way down to the 10. Then after a timeout to stop the clock it was time for the senior kicker. Many of his teammates jokingly call James Aho the "Iceman" for having ice in his veins in these type of situations. In practice Aho, had been perfect all year in the simulated pressure scenarios. But this was the real thing.

Aho would trot on the field looking to line the kick up but Coach Hoke would make the senior have think about it a little longer. Calling 3 consecutive timeouts trying to ice the "Iceman". Again Aho lined up the kick.

Aho Lines Up Potential Game Winning FG

We'll let the New Mexico Lobos radio man take over the final 3 seconds.....

"Aho lines the kick up. He looks ready. Gives his holder the nod. There's the snap. The hold. The kick! IT'S GOOOOOOD!!!! RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE AND YOUR LOBOS ARE THE WINNERS!!! How bout that for a way to end the game???"

The Iceman Comes Through With Game Winning 26 yd FG

Final Score: San Diego State 21 at New Mexico 24

After the game James Aho had this to say about the kick. "I mean that's my job. The offense gave me nothing more than an extra point and all I had to do was convert. I always tell Coach, give me the chance and I'll win it for us everytime." Coach Redfoot was thrilled not only with his kicker's late game heroics but his young QB and defense as well. "Austin did real well today. This was the first time since his benching he has thrown a pick so I was interested to see how he responded. He stayed locked in and got the job done. Also the D was tremendous. They held em in the 1st half and then made the stop when we needed it."

New Mexico moves to 4-3 (3-1) and into 3rd place in the MWC behind TCU and Utah. San Diego State falls to 5-3 (2-3). Next week the Lobos travel out to Colorado to take on the Rams of Colorado State.
