Week 2

@#9

Game Preview

This game will be the first test of the season for the #9 ranked Wisconsin Badgers. The Oregon State Beavers enter as the #2 team in terms of points per game(68) and #1 in total offense with 584 yards albeit against Sacramento State in their opening game. The Badgers enter with offensive production not quite as good though they faced a tougher opponent in UNLV.

This is the second match-up of these two teams in school history with Wisconsin taking the 1961 meeting 23-20. Be on the look-out for an explosive running attack from the Badgers with their "Thunder" and "Lightning" backfield of Montee Ball and James White. The Beavers should take to the air with quarterback Ryan Katz and wide receiver James Rodgers.

Game Recap

The first quarter of the game went by with neither offense being able to do much as the defense would shut them down either in three-and-out or allow a first down and then make a stop. The second quarter is when points started being put up on the board. Oregon State took their only lead of the game with an M. Johnson 26 yard field goal early in the quarter. (3-0) The next Badger drive saw Wisconsin get their deadly running attack going, after a first down Montee Ball subbed into the game for an iso and was hit hard while carrying the ball and sustained a mild concussion, which would force him to sit out the rest of the game. The Badgers now had to rely on "Lightning" and James White did not disappoint. He rushed in for an 11 yard touchdown to give the Badgers the lead. (7-3) After an interception by dime-back Darius Feaster, the Badgers kicked a 28 yard field goal to extend the lead to 7 going into the half. (10-3)

Oregon State would not wait long after the kick-off to try to even the score. Two carries by running back R. McCants netted the Beavers 53 yards, the drive was later stopped on a 3rd and 8 when Ryan Katz found his favorite target James Rodgers in the back of the end-zone for a toe-dragging score. (10-10) James White took no prisoners today however with the first play of the next possession he took an inside hand-off 82 yards for his second touchdown of the day. (17-10) After making a defensive stop the Badgers were driving again, now on the 10 yard line, Russell Wilson attempted an out route, but was picked off on a short throw. After getting the ball back Wilson completed two passes for 45 yards which led to a 38 yard field goal by Philip Welch. (20-10)

The fourth quarter was an offensive showcase as both teams more than doubled their scores. Ryan Katz found J. Jenkins on a screen pass for an 11 yard touchdown. (20-17) After forcing a three-and-out the Beavers looked to score again before Katz was picked off by Chris Borland, one of Katz four on the day. The very next play Wilson found James White on a 43 yard TD pass right down the middle to extend their lead. (27-17) Another interception thrown by Katz, in the end zone, this time to Devin Smith stopped another scoring drive. After gaining 8 yards on the ground, the Badgers took a chance and Wilson dropped back, fumbled the ball after being hit, which D. Glover returned for a score. (27-24) James White came once again to the rescue and once again on the first play took the ball 71 yards for a score. (34-24) Devin Smith again picked off Katz only three plays into the Beaver's drive and the game looked like Wisconsin could run out the clock. Russell Wilson had other plans though as he had had a disappointing game thus far, thought he saw one-on-one coverage and audibled to a deep post which was subsequently picked off by B. Hardin which led to a Katz pass to J. Halahuni for another Beaver score. (34-31) After recovering the onside kick the Badgers handed it off to their superman White who once again took in a 50 yard run for his 5th touchdown of the day to end the game.

Badgers 41 Beavers 31

Game Changers

HB James White 19 car, 311 yds, 4 TDs, 2 rec, 42 yds 1 TD
CB Devin Smith 2 INT

Ryan Katz 26/40, 416 yards, 3TD, 4INT

Post game Thoughts from Coach Bielema

"I have to be honest here, thankfully we got the win, it was ugly not the type of game I want to be playing if not for James White having the best game of his life we would have lost this game, I need Russell to step up and complete some more passes if we have a chance at going far this year....

400 yards passing for Katz, our defense needs to do a better job at covering sure 4 interceptions looks great on paper but if you let up that many yards, I hope you have some chances......

With all that I'm just happy we got the win, now we know some things we have to work on and it shows the guys, that it takes hard work, not just showing up and going through the motions to be a great football team."

Week 3

Game Preview

It's not everyday that you get a head coaching job offer but that is exactly what happened to former Wisconsin defensive coordinator Dave Doeren. Following a season where he helped the Badgers make an appearance in the Rose Bowl and helping J.J. Watt to emerge as a star, he started to field various offers. After being interviewed for the top job at both Indiana and Vanderbilt, Doeren landed at Northern Illinois.

Wisconsin is looking to show their former coach that it's the players not Doeren who made the team as good as they were. James White, after being named Player of the Week offered this soundbite, "He may be a former coach that all of us should respect but we're going out there to show him why he shoulda never left." White is currently the leading rusher in the NCAA after last week's amazing performance.

Game Recap

Wisconsin opened the first quarter with a drive using star running back James White that eventually led to a 42 yard field goal. (3-0) The rest of the half saw Doeren's defense old and new make several stops and force change of possessions for both teams. After a big punt return by Nick Toon, in the second quarter, Montee Ball started to grind out yards by leading a 34 yard drive, which he ultimately ended by scoring from 4 yards out. (10-0) After forcing a three-and-out, the Badger's Russell Wilson gained 24 yards on a QB scramble, then lasered a ball James White for a 25 yard score. (17-0) NIU finally solved the Badger defense with a few passes, a long run, then a 24 yard TD pass from C. Harnish to M. Moore, to narrow the Badger lead. (17-7) After receiving the kick-off, Russell Wilson rushed twice, on the second one, was hit in the back and forced to sit because of back spasms. No problem, back-up QB Jon Budmayr was eager to prove why he was the starter after spring-ball. He was able to find Jake Byrne across the middle for a 41 yard gain. With only a second remaining, Bret Bielema opted out of kicking a field goal, instead choosing to go for a touchdown, which the Badgers got on a half-back toss to James White. (24-7)

Not much happened in the third quarter, except for a 21 yard field goal by NIU's M. Sims to narrow the lead to 14. (24-10) On the first play of the fourth quarter however Budmayr threw up a prayer to star receiver Nick Toon who came down with the ball between two defenders for a 53 yard gain. Montee Ball took over and finished the drive with a 6 yard run up the middle. (31-10) After forcing a three-and-out, James White and Montee Ball combined for 57 yards, ending in Ball's third score of the day to seal the victory for Wisconsin against their former coach.

Badgers 38 Huskies 10

Game Changers
Montee Ball 18 rush, 106 yds, 3 TD
James White 18 rush, 109 yds, 2TD

Post Game Thoughts with Coach Bielema

"It's always nice to get a win against one of your former assistants, I really respect Dave a lot and I think he'll do well at NIU, just hopefully not against us. (laughs) ...

Once again the running game carried us, Montee played great today really leading us out there, I'm really happy with the defense only allowing 10 points they never had a let down even though we were up most of the game."

Re: Wisconsin Badgers: Jump Around

Week 4

Game Preview

There really isn't any reason why these two teams should ever be meeting on a football field. South Dakota will consider the game a success if they are able to get any kind of points on the board. Wisconsin on the other hand needs to get Russell Wilson's confidence back before going into their first Big Ten game this season against newcomer Nebraska.

Game Recap

This game was a blowout from the start. Wisconsin scored 3 touchdowns each quarter for the first 3 quarters of the game. The game saw ridiculous rushing statistics from "Thunder" and "Lightning", each carried the ball only 8 times with Ball gaining 134 yards and 3 scores, while James White gained 187 yards and had 4 touchdowns. Even back-up Kyle Zulegar got in on the action in the fourth quarter scoring a touchdown, to go along with his 146 yards. Russell Wilson had his first truly good game of the year completing 13 passes on 17 attempts for 251 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Badgers 73 Coyotes 0

Game Changers

James White 8 rush, 187 yds, 4 TD
Montee Ball 8 rush, 134 yds, 3 TD
Russell Wilson 13/17, 251 yds, 2TD

Post Game Thoughts from Coach Bielema

"Look, I respect South Dakota for coming out here and trying to compete against us but I really don't think this was the best game to play before going up against Nebraska. Yeah we had a great game, but I can't have the guys thinking all they need to do is show up and that we'll win all of our games. If that's the mindset we come in with next week we're gunna get blown out of the water no question about."
