Championship Caliber

Ruston, LA - It was fairly simple for the Trojans. Win and you're champions. Lose and your bowl prospects aren't good. On Saturday night, the Trojans made it known they were champions.

Troy took the ball first and drove right down the field for the 1st quarter's only score. Louisiana Tech could not even manage a first down in the opening quarter of the defacto Sun Belt title game. By the time the Bulldogs offense got in gear, Troy had built a 21-0 lead and sucked the energy right out of the crowd.

Despite Chris Anderson's white hot start, quarterback Corey Robinson put himself squarely in the dog house of Coach Powell. After a 6 for 6 start, Robinson threw an interception, an incompletion, and then a 2nd interception. After Tech scored their first points of the game following interception number two, Powell pulled his junior starter and K.D. Edenfield entered into the game.

The freshman responded well throwing a touchdown to Eric Thomas with five minutes remaining in the game to ice the win for Troy. The key to Troy's title clinching win however was Chris Anderson. The senior broke Shawn Southward's single game rushing record thanks in large part to touchdown runs of 75 and 48 yards.

As clock ticked down to zero following the quarterback kneels, Tech fans left the stadium wondering what happened to their team in November. Louisiana Tech started out 5-0 in conference play only to finish 6-3 and in 3rd place in the final standings. For Troy it is their 6th Sun Belt championship, most of any school.

Now, the Trojans will wait to see who they face in the New Orleans Bowl. Barring a miracle, Troy will not be able to move up in the bowl pecking order.

Trojans Sink Pirates

New Orleans, LA - The New Orleans Bowl was billed as a high octane game between 2 of the nation's top offenses. Someone forgot to tell the East Carolina offense.

Before the Pirates offense could even get settled, Troy was ahead 14-0. When the Pirates connected on a 75-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-7 in the first quarter, it seemed as though the shootout was on. But the Troy defense had other ideas.

After Corey Robinson threw an interception in the redzone, ECU took over at their own 5 yard line. Johnathan Massaquoi blew past the ECU right tackle and brought down Brad Wornick at the 1. The very next play, ECU attempted a speed option out of the shotgun and seemingly the entire front seven for Troy was in the backfield to bring down the running back at the pitch. Getting official credit for the safety was Brannon Bryan to make it 16-7 Troy.

On the ensuing safety punt, Justin Albert muffed the kick before Jaquon Robinson picked it up at the 41 yard line amidst the sea of ECU defenders. While the Pirates went for Albert, Robinson had picked up the ball and shot through the wedge and found daylight at midfield and not a single ECU player within 5 yards of him. The kickoff return for a touchdown was the first in Robinson's career.

The Trojans took a 30-7 lead into halftime and built the lead up to as many as 37 before ECU scored their 2nd touchdown of the ball game. Like many thought, ECU struggled to get a running game going and it was their undoing as they were 2-11 on 3rd down. Due to 3rd down failures, ECU was forced to punt 7 times to Troy's 3.

Shawn Southward took home the bowl's most outstanding player in his final game in a Troy uniform. The senior rushed for 175 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 15 carries.
