In Memory of Jazz | A Connecticut Huskies Dynasty

Jasper Howard Murder Stuns UConn Community

Star University of Connecticut (UConn) cornerback Jasper T. (Jazz) Howard was murdered early Sunday morning following a stellar performance on the gridiron against the Louisville Cardinals hours earlier. Howard, who was in attendance at a student dance late Saturday night, was stabbed to death on the Storrs campus. Details of the event are murky while the assailant still remains at large.

Howard, 20, was from Miami, Florida having played for Miami Edison High School. A junior, Howard was considered to be one of the best cornerbacks in the Big East Conference. Indeed, on Saturday night he had one of the best games of his career with eleven tackles.

Details surrounding the murder are sketchy although we do know that there were some three hundred people at the dance. Early Sunday morning a fire alarm was pulled in the Student Union where the dance was being held, forcing everyone out onto the UConn campus. A fight broke out, two people were stabbed, with Howard dying soon after being airlifted to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford. The unnamed second stabbing victim was treated and released.

In a press conference on Sunday, UConn Director of Athletics Jeff Hathaway offered tribute to Howard. “The UConn family is a special one and we will all get through this together. Jasper was a great young man and he will be missed by all of his fellow student-athletes in each of our athletic programs. Our thoughts in the Division of Athletics go out to the Howard family.”
Police Investigation

UConn Police and the Connecticut State Police Major Crime Unit are actively investigating Howard’s death and are asking anyone with information pertaining to the incident to contact UConn Police at 860-486-4800.

News of Howard’s murder quickly spread across campus and around the world of college football. “All of us are saddened with the loss of our brother and teammate Jasper,” says UConn head football coach Randy Edsall. “Jazz was a tremendous young man who had grown so much in his short time with us at UConn. He was starting to come into his own as both a player and a person. He will be sorely missed but we will have him in our memories. We will show support to Jasper’s family and go on with our season full-steam ahead as that is what Jasper would want us to do.”

A Facebook group “Help Find Jasper Howard’s Murderer” was established to bring the UConn community together in a concerted effort to help find Howard’s killer. Jazz is survived by his mother, Angila, extended family, and an unnamed girlfriend who is pregnant with their child.

Funeral and burial plans are expected to be announced today with an on-campus memorial being put together. The Huskies’ next home game is on Saturday, October 31 against Rutgers with a tribute to Jazz expected.
