SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas State Bobcats announced the hiring of first year Offensive Coordinator Donald Draper at a press conference this morning. Second year Head Coach Dennis Franchione and Texas State Athletic Director Larry Teis spoke along with Draper about the decision behind the hiring.
"We interviewed a number of qualified candidates for the position, and Coach Franchione and I didn't take the decision lightly" Teis said.
"In the end, we felt like we had something special in Don and after hearing his plans for the offense and his vision for the program, we knew we had our man". said Franchione.
Franchione and Bobcats enter the 2012-13 season as a first year FBS participant and knew that with the challenges of "big time" college football presents, a solid assistant coaching staff is crucial.
"Texas State has had success in the past but division one football is a gauntlet. You need a staff that is hungry and can go out and compete for recruits if you're going to stand a chance."
When asked about his new job, Draper responded "I think we can do big things in the WAC and if we get the young men we recruit to buy in and put in the work then we'll be a success."
With the ink still wet on his three year contract, Draper will have some time to get adjusted to life at Texas State.
HOUSTON, Texas - The Bobcats traveled to Robertson Stadium for their FBS debut on Saturday in a regionally televised contest with Houston. They left with a lesson in "big boy football" learned dealt by Houston as they rolled Texas State to a 48-20 final.
The Bobcats defense was picked clean by Houston relentless air attack who racked up 570 yards and 5 TDs on the afternoon. No surprise that the defense was mistake prone in their first FBS game on the road, hopefully DC Craig Naivar will be able to coach up the young secondary going forward.
The Texas State offense looked competent in OC Donald Drapers debut outing, led by SR QB Shaun Rutherford and SR HB Marcus Curry in a balanced attack.
Overall, HC Dennis Franchione said he was pleased with the intensity level of his team, but stressed discipline is required going forward.
"I thought we showed a lot of fight. Our guys didn't back down when facing a talented team like Houston. But, I saw guys jumping routes in bad spots on some plays and getting beat deep, false starts on the O-Line, the type of things that a young team needs to reign in if we want to win."
On the injury front, the defensive unit will be without two important members going forward. JR starting FS Xavier Daniels suffered a broken tibia in the opener and is expected to be out 6-8 weeks. Also, JR backup DT Deshun Williams will miss 8-10 weeks with a dislocated elbow.
The Bobcats (0-1) will host Texas Tech (1-0) next Saturday (9/8) at 2:00pm. The game will be broadcasted regionally.

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas Tech gave little respect to the Bobcats on Saturday. In what amounted to a practice scrimmage for the Red Raiders, Texas State put up little fight in a 48-17 drubbing in the home opener.
The Red Raiders dominated on both sides of the ball and had the second unit in during the waning moments of the third quarter. The Bobcat offense was ineffective most of the day and the injury plagued defense continued to get abused.
For Texas State, the early season bye next week couldn't come soon enough. Another member of the Bobcat D-Line, FR DT Samuel Mayes, suffered a serious rib injury and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. HC Franchione will need the extra week to assemble a rag-tag defensive unit while working with first year OC Draper to find a way to move the ball.
"Its been a rough couple weeks around here. We got guys beat up and we, the coaching staff, need to use this next week to get our house in order."
The Bobcats (0-2) will face Stephen F. Austin in Week 4 (9/22) at 4:30pm.

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State returned from the bye week well rested against Stephen F. Austin and it showed. The Bobcats turned it on early and ran away from the Lumberjacks to a comfortable 56-24 win at home.
The story of the day was the two man tandem in the backfield that amassed one yard shy of 400 yards on the ground against a porous defense. Both SR HB Marcus Curry and SO(R) HB Terrence Franks found big holes and solid downfield blocking that lead to long runs all day long.
The relentless ground assault allowed SR QB Shaun Rutherford to find JR WR Andy Erickson wide open on 3 deep TD passes as the Lumberjack defense loaded the box to deny the run.
"I was really happy with how the plan myself and Draper drew up was executed by the offense today" said HC Franchione afterwards.
"Though our team is still giving away too many free yards in penalties for my liking".
Still, a win is a welcome sight after the demoralizing first two weeks of the 2012 season.
The Bobcats (1-2) play host to Nevada (3-1) next Saturday (9/29) at 3:30pm. The game will be broadcasted regionally.
