Re: "A Descent into the Maelström" - qpc123's Baltimore Ravens CCM(M13)

Ravens "D" holds off Bengals in season opening win

BALTIMORE -- An uncharacteristic performance by Ray Rice and the Ravens offense was offset by an effective outing by Ray Lewis and the team's veteran defense.

The Bengals defense did a good job a bottling up Rice, holding him to 81 yards on 27 carries.

After Rice was stuffed on a third and one with a little less than two minutes to play leading to a Baltimore punt, he never doubted what the outcome of the game would be.

"I just looked at the clock and I said, 'Our defense will get it done,' " Rice recalled. "That's the faith I have in our guys."

At times the Ravens defense was forced into a bend a but don't break mode as the offense failed to get things going early. The Bengals dominated the time of possession by 13+ minutes.

The Ravens won in large part because of Torrey Smith, whose 78 yard catch and run ignited the Baltimore offense in the second quarter. Smith finished the game with 3 catches for 113 yards.

Flacco would connect with Anquan Boldin for an eight yard TD on the teams next drive to give the Ravens a 14-10 lead headed into the locker room at halftime.

Cincinnati's first half TD came courtesy a 12 yard TD pass from Andy Dalton to Ben Tate. Tate led all receivers in the game with 9 receptions gaining 98 yards.

The Bengals had a chance to cut their deficit to one just before the half, but Josh Brown missed a 44 yard FG as time expired.

Baltimore opened the second half with a touchdown drive capped off by a one yard Rice run to make the score 21-10.

While the offense would not score again the defense was able to hold the Bengals to just three points in the second half to secure the 21-13 win.

"That certainly wasn't what we expected to have out there today," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said. "We got outplayed and we got outcoached."

To add injury to insult the Bengals will be without defensive anchor Domata Peko who suffered a broken jaw and will miss at least a couple games.

Look forward to next week the Ravens will make the short road trip to Philadelphia to face the Eagles. Philly is coming off a 30-18 opening week win over the Cleveland Browns.

Re: "A Descent into the Maelström" - qpc123's Baltimore Ravens CCM(M13)

Vick runs wild as Ravens lose 38-30

PHILADELPHIA -- With the all the pressure focused on him, Michael Vick made all the right decisions -- again.

Vick threw for 319 yards and 2 touchdowns and added 86 rushing yards and two more TD's giving him four total in the game.

With the win the Eagles are 2-0 for the first time since Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens led them to the Super Bowl in 2004.

Trailing by eight mid-way through the third quarter it appeared the Ravens had gotten the break the had been needing all day.

Vick threw incomplete as he was being hit by Haloti Ngata, but the play was ruled a fumble and it was recovered by the Ravens. A replay overturned the call and Vick scored on the next play.

"There's some serious calls the refs missed," Baltimore's Ray Lewis said. "It's just the way it is, man."

This was a homecoming of sorts for Flacco and Ravens coach John Harbaugh. Flacco grew up in nearby Haddon Township, N.J. Harbaugh spent 10 seasons as an assistant under Reid before going to Baltimore in 2008.

"I think we'll be just fine coming out of this going forward," Harbaugh said.

However, Harbaugh's definition of "fine" may differ from most.

The biggest loss for the Ravens Sunday was Ed Reed's injury just before the half. Reed suffered a shoulder tear and will miss the next 6-8 weeks. Sean Considine will take over in the starting line-up.

Making matters worse Reed will be out of next weeks AFC Championship re-match against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

Re: "A Descent into the Maelström" - qpc123's Baltimore Ravens CCM(M13)

No Reed, No Problem for Ravens

BALTIMORE -- You don't have to ask Tom Brady what he thinks about Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed, just look at his wrist.

Before Brady faces the Ravens he writes "Check Reed" on his wristband to remind himself to find out what Reed is doing before every snap.

Sunday, that wasn't necessary as Reed was on the Ravens sideline with a torn shoulder.

Maybe Brady should have written "Check for Williams" instead.

The Ravens nickel corner was Brady's nemesis on this Sunday. Williams recorded 7 tackles with a sack as well, to top it off he picked off a pass and took it back 36 for the touchdown. The performance earned Williams AFC Defensive Player of Week honors.

Baltimore jumped on the Patriots from the start and New England never held the lead.

Already up 3-0 a 33 yard touchdown run by Ray Rice made it 10-0 Ravens after one quarter. Rice finished the game with 136 yards on 27 carries.

New England got a field goal of their own before Williams pick six made the score 17-3 in Baltimore's favor.

Danny Woodhead would score on a 11 yard run before the half to make the Ravens lead 17-10 at the break.

Another Tucker FG made it 20-10 Ravens before Brady and Welker connected for their first of two TD's.

Welker and Brady caught the Baltimore in zero coverage and took advantage for a 64 yard touchdown that cut the Patriots deficit to just three.

Joe Flacco had a rough passing day, but his QB sneak from the one yard line put the Baltimore lead back to 10.

Welker's 2nd TD cut the lead back to three once again, but New England would get no closer.

Dennis Pitta put the game on ice when he took a simple 5 yard crossing route and turned it into a 74 yard touchdown to give the Ravens a 34-24 win and a bit of redemption from last season.

The win extends the Ravens home winning streak to 12 going back to prior seasons.

After the loss the Patroits now hold a 2-1 record. "We didn't do what we needed to do to help our offense tonight," Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork said. "And it (stinks), because coming into the game, I think we had a pretty good idea of how we wanted to play it."

As usual not all the news is good for the Ravens. Starting Middle Linebacker Jameel McClain suffered a Broken Tailbone in the game and will miss the the remainder of the season and will likely be placed on injured reserve.

Next week the Ravens will be at home again as they welcome the division rival Cleveland Browns who are currently 1-2 on the season.
