2013 Blue Mountain State Mountain Goats Defensive Philosophy

We are an attack style defense that plays with great technique and effort. Our coaches and players hang their hats on three things - Play Harder than our opponent, Play with better Technique/Fundamentals than our opponent, and Play Smarter than our opponent. We recruit and develop speed and toughness. Once you are here we will modify our schemes to fit and feature our playmaker's abilities with the design. We are all about using our player's strength's and hiding our player's weaknesses. We firmly believe in exposing the offense's weak links with our best players.

We will play both man and zone coverage's here at Blue Mountain State University. Each coverage scheme will be disguisable and structured to force the offense to read it on the run. Our motto on our front is to stop the run on the way to the QB by beating blocks and changing schemes on the fly. We are not a read front, we are an up the field attacking defensive front. We will bring both zone and man pressure throughout games to change up our mode of attack. Our players will be trained to learn our schemes each play. We want our players to always be in attack mode. Thinking is done between plays and on the sideline, not during plays - that is when we react and run - always attacking.

2013 Blue Mountain State Mountain Goats Special Teams Philosophy

This 1/3 of the game is a phase that we firmly believe can be our greatest advantage over the course of the game. There are 6 teams within the Special Teams family (Kickoff Coverage, Kickoff Return, Punt, Punt Pressure, PAT/FG, and PAT/FG Block). Each one of these teams is coached with great passion and energy by our staff. Every member of our staff, including the Head Coach will be involved in coaching our special teams. We know that field position can win games and special teams is a phase of the game that involves a large change in field position on every play. These momentum plays can and will be the difference in winning and losing championships. Special teams are call "special" for a reason. Our players are graded on every snap at every position and they fight to be the most productive 11 members of our team over the course of the season. These 11 players are put into the "Elite 11" and receive special standing on our team.

NEW BMS HEAD COACH ANNOUNCES DEPTH CHART

Quarterback

1) Freshman- Alex Moran- 82 Ovr.

2013-07-09_23.08.01.jpg
Mountain Goat fans expect big things from freshman signal caller Alex Moran.

The fate of the Blue Mountain State offense rests on the right arm of Alex Moran. The fans believe the team is destined for greatness, but who’s the new guy, Alex Moran? Experts say all position players on offense are proven or sure-things, but the biggest question mark is Alex Moran. The expected weakest link of the offense, Alex Moran. Yes, I’d say there’s a lot of pressure on this freshman quarterback named Alex Moran who’s expected to jump right in to a starter’s role at Blue Mountain State.

Moran, a five star recruit and the number 1 rated high school quarterback this past recruiting period committed to Blue Mountain State expecting to have fun, drink, and have relationships with girls, while learning and studying the playbook as a 2nd string quarterback during his first season on campus. Little did he know, Travis Amell, BMS’s senior projected starting quarterback, would be kicked off the team for accusations surrounding a male prostitute. Suddenly, Moran will be expected to start at quarterback despite being just a freshman. At 82 overall, Alex is the highest rated starting freshman quarterback in college football this upcoming season, so he knew expectations would be there, but he had no idea they’d come this soon.

Alex.jpg

Alex Moran is from Cheyenne, Wyoming. He was the first 10,000 yard passer in Wyoming High School history. Despite that success, and a potential four-year starting role at Blue Mountain State, it is still believed that Alex does not see college football as a stepping stone for the NFL and is content to spend have a life as an "Average Joe" once he graduates from college. The chance of going pro doesn't seem like a possibility to him, and he expects to go back to Wyoming to become a gym teacher. Alex Moran comes off as a slacker, but he is driven to succeed by his desire to have fun and sleep with women.
Though not noble, people understand Alex Moran, but that alone doesn't make him likeable. His high school fans rooted for him because he is charming, honest, and even naive. Alex isn't cocky or a showboat. Alex has just as many doubts about himself as regular people do, which makes him relatable. He gives that goofy drunken smile, and the fans and coaches alike feel like he is a guy they’d want to hang out with. He is nice to everyone when so many others are not. He shows the nerds who do his homework a good time. Alex Moran is the common man, who is stepping in to a ginormous starting role.

2) Sophmore- Reggie Lawrence- 81 Ovr.
3) Junior- Dan Golden- 81 Ovr.

Running Backs

1) Freshman- Craig Shilo- 86 Ovr.

#33 Shilo takes the hand-off from QB Alex Moran on photo shoot day

Running back is a true strength for this ball club, and usually is a strength for C. Massey coached teams. BMS has unusual depth, as all half backs on the roster could start for other D-1 teams across the country. It all starts up front with #1 running back recruit in the nation Craig Shilo. Shilo is a running back from Columbus, Ohio. He was the national High School Player of the Year last year and became the first running back in Ohio history to become the national high school player of the year AND the number one running back ranked by scout.com in the same year.

Criag Shilo.jpg

A 5-star blue chip prospect, Shilo is expected to shine as a freshman. Craig is rather straight-laced and committed to his ultra-manipulative girlfriend Denise, who wanted Craig to go to school at Georgia or Georgia Tech where they both have family, but Shilo couldn't resist the program at Blue Mountain State.

2) Senior (RS)- Nick Poole- 86 Ovr.
3) Junior- Steven Harper- 86 Ovr.
4) Sophmore- Erik Ginn- 85 Ovr.

Fullbacks

1) Junior (RS)- Kellen Chandler- 90 Ovr.
2) Senior- Joel Robison- 82 Ovr.
3) Sophmore (RS)- J.T. Wall- 75 Ovr.

Wide Recievers

1) Junior (RS)- Jeff Dortch- 93 Ovr.

Junior, Jeff Dortch catches a ball in the endzone on picture day

2) Junior (RS)- Tony Waller- 93 Ovr.
3) Freshman (RS)- Brent Mayes- 90 Ovr.
4) Freshman- James Fraser- 87 Ovr.
5) Freshman (RS)- Tyler Dunham- 86 Ovr.
6) Freshman (RS)- Kasey Miller- 83 Ovr.

Coach Massey's thoughts: "We have what I like to think of as one of the best wide receiving groups in America here at Blue Mountain State University. With two juniors at 93 overall, and four freshman rated 83 or higher, freshman QB Alex Moran should have no problem finding targets during his career here at Blue Mountain State. We also have a very fast, large-bodied group, which is a rare combination to begin with. All four of the freshman wide-outs on this ball club are over 6'3, with two being 6'6! Not to mention, every wide receiver on campus is above a 92 speed rating. That's just dangerous. How'd I get so lucky to fall right in to the lap of a potential dynamite air attack?"

Tight Ends

1) Senior (RS)- William Dowdell- 91 Ovr.
2) Sophomore (RS)- J.T. Wall- 87 Ovr.
3) Sophomore- Trey Thornburg- 86 Ovr.

Coach Massey's thoughts: "Seriously? As if our passing attack wasn't already deadly, you throw in 3 tight ends that all stand over 6'4 and could all potentially catch balls on Sunday? God bless you coach Marty Daniels. Thank you for all of your great players you recruited for me."
