AutoZone Liberty Bowl: Connecticut (8-4) vs. Tulsa (11-2)
PHILADELPHIA, pa -- It has just been announced that the Connecticut Huskies (8-4, 4th in American) and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (11-2, 1st in Conference USA) will play in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl at Lincoln Financial Field on December 31st, 2013.
Connecticut Huskies (8-4, 5-3): After a decade in the now-defunct Big East Conference, Connecticut played in the inaugural season of the American Athletic Conference. Connecticut was led all season by its stellar defense, especially the play of linebacker Yawin Smallwood and defensive end Jesse Joseph. Smallwood and Joseph anchored a defense that ranked among the top 20 in the nation all season, and was best in the nation against the run. On offense, the Huskies were led at skill positions by running back Lyle McCombs and wide receiver Shakim Phillips.
Key Wins: Maryland, Cincinnati
Bad Losses: None
Offensive Player to Watch: Lyle McCombs, HB. McCombs averaged 112.1 rushing yards per game on the ground in Huskies' wins, but just 69.2 yards per game in losses this season.
Defensive Player to Watch: Jesse Joseph, LE. Joseph is a finalist for three national awards (Bronco Nagurski, Chuck Bednarik, and Rotary Lombardi) for his stellar play. His 22 sacks leads all FBS players.
Question for Gameday: Who will the Huskies start at quarterback? The majority of games were started by Chandler Whitmer, but he has been recently criticized for his inconsistency and poor decision making. Redshirt freshman Casey Cochran started the Huskies' final regular season game against Memphis, but was removed after suffering a concussion.
McCombs needs to play his A-game for the Huskies to win
Tulsa Golden Hurricane (11-2, 8-1): Tulsa's high-powered offense has been matched by few this season. Led by senior quarterback Cody Green, who has thrown for 3269 yards and 30 touchdowns this season, Tulsa has averaged 34.2 points per game, good for 10th in the nation. Tulsa has scored 104 points in its last 2 games combined, including the Conference USA championship game. Since its loss to Rice in the 5th game of the season, the Golden Hurricane have rattled off eight consecutive victories. Their two losses have been by a combined 14 points, including a 45-37 loss to then #3 Oklahoma in overtime.
Key Wins: Marshall, Middle Tennessee State University
Bad Losses: None
Offensive Player of Watch: Keyarris Garrett, WR. Garrett leads the team in all receiving categories. He has 70 receptions for 1308 yards and 16 touchdowns on the season. His 100.6 yards per game is among the nation's best.
Defensive Player to Watch: Dwight Dobbins, DB. Dobbins leads Tulsa with six interceptions on the season, and is a main reason that Tulsa is 6th in the nation with a +13 turnover differential this season. Look for Dobbins and the rest of the Golden Hurricane defensive backs to key in on Whitmer and Cochran.
Question for Gameday: Will Tulsa be able to repeat as Liberty Bowl champions? The Golden Hurricane defeated the Iowa State Cyclones in the 2012 AutoZone Liberty Bowl in a wild 31-17 contest. If so, Tulsa will have to overcome the loss of sophomore defensive tackle Derrick Luetjen, who broke his leg in the Conference USA title game victory over Middle Tennessee.
