Heartbreak in Hartford Huskies' Victory Drive Falls Short
EAST HARTFORD, ct -- "Game of the year. That's all I gotta say." That's how UCONN head coach Paul Pasqualoni started off his press conference. And boy, game of the year it was.
Tonight, the top two teams in the newly-minted American Athletic Conference squared off before a sellout crowd at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. The #6-ranked Lousiville Cardinals came in, boasting a 8-0 record on the season. Led by Heisman hopeful Teddy Bridgewater, The Ville wanted to make sure they left Connecticut with a win.
Bridgewater, the star quarterback, made sure he brought his game with him. Said UCONN star middle linebacker Yawin Smallwood: "He's the best in the conference, bar none. I mean, Chandler [Whitmer] is good, and everything, but Teddy's DAT DUDE! We couldn't stop him." Bridgewater had a field day with the Huskies' defense, completing an astonishing 21 of his 24 passing attempts and tallying 235 yards and one touchdown. Oh, did I mention his 66 yard touchdown run as well?
Louisville started the game fast -- real fast. In fact, when the Huskies looked up at the clock with just over 2 minutes remaining in the first half, they found themselves in a 17-0 hole. Touchdowns by Dominique Brown (16 yard run) and Damian Copeland (1 yard catch from Bridgewater), coupled with a John Wallace field goal gave the Cards a large advantage.
UCONN was able to answer on their final drive of the half. A huge 37-yard return by Kamal Abrams set the Huskies up with a 1st-and-10 on their own 44. After a number of short and medium-length passing completions, Whitmer was able to find Deshon Foxx over the middle for a 17 yard touchdown. Foxx, the slot receiver for the Huskies, broke out in the game against The Ville, catching 5 passes for 66 yards and 2 touchdowns.
In the 3rd quarter, after a Lousiville touchdown run (9 yards, Senorise Perry) made the score 24-7, Huskies fans started filing to the exits. Shakim Phillips put them back into their seats. Phillips, the Huskies' leading receiver all year, pulled in a catch on a short slant route then deked three defenders with one spin move. Once he stopped running, it was 47 yards later, and a touchdown for the Huskies, cutting the deficit to 24-14.

Now, the fourth quarter was pure mayhem. A second field goal make by Wallace stretched Lousiville's lead to 27-14. A two-touchdown deficit would be a lot for the Huskies to overcome with just over 6 minutes left on the clock.
Finally, with 2:34 remaining, the Huskies broke through. Whitmer found Foxx again, open in the middle of the end zone, for a 3 yard score. "They all thought it was gonna go to Lyle [McCombs]. But I was open, and Chan threw me the ball," said Foxx. With the deficit now 27-21, the Huskies would need a stop on the next possession to have a chance.
Unfortunately, that's when Bridgewater's legs decided to come to play. On a 3rd-and-8 from his own 34, Bridgewater called an option play. Said Smallwood: "There was a miscommunication. I tried to tell Ashy (UCONN OLB Jefferson Ashiru) to play QB, but we both ran to cover the running back." The miscommunication cost the Huskies - to the tune of a 66 yard TD run by Bridgewater, who went untouched.
With just 1:38 to go, the Huskies faced the impossible, trailing 33-21. Another long return by Abrams gave the Huskies a short field to work with. After three decent passes, Whitmer again found Phillips for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 33-28.
After a failed onside kick, the Louisville had the ball with just 1:05 to play. After a quick first down run, the Huskies stalled the next three rushes by the Cardinals. For some unknown reason, Louisville coach Charlie Strong decided to try a 53 yard field goal. It missed, giving UCONN the ball on their own 45 with 12 seconds to go. A touchdown would win the game, and send Rentschler Field into hysteria.
Whitmer pulled the huddle together, and called what he could: a Hail Mary play, looking for Phillips. Unfortunately, Louisville read him like a book, intercepting the pass. Bridgewater's kneel-down sealed the victory for the Cardinals, propelling them to a still-perfect 9-0 record on the season. UCONN falls to 6-2 overall, and 3-1 in conference play.

Louisville, Houston Tied for Lead
Cincinnati takes 3rd spot
And then there were two. Undefeated teams in the AAC, that is. After a 33-28 showdown ended in a Louisville victory over Connecticut, and a Cincinnati victory over SMU, just two teams remain undefeated in AAC play this season. And luckily for us, they are scheduled to square off against each other this week.
This week's matchup between Houston and Louisville may likely decide who will take The American's BCS Bowl Bid. For Louisville, a title chance may be on the line. For Houston, it would be the first conference championship since winning its conference in 2006.
In the cellar of the AAC are winless Rutgers, Memphis, and South Florida. Memphis takes on USF this week, so mercifully, one of these teams will end up with a conference victory, or so we think...

Re: The King of the AAC | A UCONN Huskies Dynasty (NCAA 14)
Tough loss to the Cardinals. I've noticed in most of your games the CPU qb's comp percentage is astonishing, in my dynasty the same thing is occurring so I turned the qb accuracy slider down for both CPU and user (coach mode) and I'm liking the results. Anyways love the back story on the recruits, very creative.

That's a good idea for the QB accuracy. I am gonna do a full stat breakdown at the end of the year and compare this years stats to the average of the last 3 years of UCONN stats. I will definitely be changing some sliders after this season is over.
Thanks for following. I want to give the players something of a history, and will continue to profile players in future years. It is easy to do for recruits because I can really say anything I want haha. It's a little tougher for actual players because I want to be as authentic as possible.
Anyways, I won't be posting for about a week. I'm volunteering at an overnight camp this week, and won't be back home until the 27th.
