Game 9: #20 SMU 38, Connecticut 20

Stampede
SMU throttles Huskies in Texas

DALLAS, tx -- The Connecticut Huskies are facing adversity. The Huskies have lost their second consecutive game, this time at the hands of the SMU Mustangs. Last week, the Huskies were taken down by Top-10 Louisville. This week, #20 SMU had its way with UCONN.

Going into the game, the Huskies knew they were going to be facing an aerial assault from SMU. Garrett Gilbert, the QB of SMU, and former Texas Longhorn, led the charge the entire game. By the end of the day, Gilbert racked up 321 yards through the air, including three touchdown passes.

SMU hit the ground running (metaphorically speaking) against UCONN. In the first quarter, an 83-yard drive was capped off by a 3-yard touchdown run by running back Rishadd Wimbley. It was the first of two touchdowns on the ground for Wimbley, who picked up 87 yards on 18 carries.

Rishadd Wimbley scores the first of his two touchdowns

In the second quarter, SMU added to their lead quickly, as Jeremiah Gaines caught a pass from Gilbert on a 4th-down-and-one for a touchdown. After the game, head coach Paul Pasqualoni was asked about the play, "It was a gutsy move on their part. We were sure they were gonna take the three points, so we were more than surprised they went for it on 4th." A Chase Hover field goal with 1:24 remaining gave the Mustangs a 17-0 lead.

That was the lead SMU was destined to have going into the 2nd half, however Huskies QB Chandler Whitmer was not on the same page with that. Whitmer, like he has done numerous times this season, led a drive in the last two minutes of the half, culminating in a Sean McQuillan 3-yard touchdown pass. Whitmer described the play as follows: "We were looking for a short pass, because we only had 6 seconds. If it was incomplete, we were gonna just take the three points. But luckily, I was able to find Sean [McQuillan] open in the end zone."

Darius Joseph scores one of three touchdown passes from Gilbert

SMU did not let up in the 2nd half, as they scored three of the first four touchdowns to put the game out of reach. UCONN answered a SMU 49 yard TD with a 3 yard TD of its own, but back-to-back touchdowns put the game out of reach with a little over 3 minutes to go in the game. A Dhameer Bradley touchdown pass from Whitmer came during "junk time", but it was way too little, way too late.

The Huskies drop their second game in a row, falling to 6-3 (3-2) on the season. They will welcome Temple to Rentschler Field next week, hoping to bounce back.

Recruiting Roundup

Tack on Four More

EAST HARTFORD, ct -- Paul Pasqualoni and his coaching staff have added four more recruits to their Class of 2014. This week, the Huskies were able to add commitments from DE Robert Copeland, TE Mark Doyle, MLB Steve Hadley, and CB Josh Smith. Here is some information about the newest Huskies.

Robert Copeland, DE - This defensive end comes to Connecticut all the way from Cerritos, California. Ranked the #92 defensive end in the country, Copeland ended up choosing Connecticut over BYU, Bowling Green, Boise State, and Rutgers. Copeland's favorite activity is playing video games, especially the Call of Duty Series.

Mark Doyle, TE - Tight end Mark Doyle joins the Huskies via Swainsboro, Georgia. Originally born in New Haven, CT, Doyle has been a lifelong Huskies fan. His favorite sports moment was when Kemba Walker hit the step-back shot against Pittsburgh to send UCONN to the semi-finals of the Big East Tournament. He ultimately chose UCONN over the likes of North Carolina, NC State, Penn State, and Clemson.

Steve Hadley, MLB - The #34 MLB in the Class of 2014, Steve Hadley, hails from North Fort Myers, Florida. He ultimately chose Connecticut over Western Kentucky, San Jose State, Marshall, and San Diego State. Hadley hopes to be able to contribute immediately on the defensive end, but will "do whatever is best for the team". It is clear that Hadley has a good head on his shoulders.

Josh Smith, CB - Ranked the #128 cornerback in the Class of 2014, Josh Smith is coming to UCONN with a chip on his shoulders. The Rosedale, Maryland, native has won three consecutive state championships, and looks to win his fourth in four years this season. He broke the Maryland single-game record with 6 interceptions in a game his sophomore year. We will all be very surprised if Smith contributes early in his career. He seems destined to be a redshirt for the 2014 season.

Below is UCONN's entire Class of 2014.

BCS Rankings - After Week 12

BCS Rankings - After Week 12

The BCS Rankings are out. At the top of the list are the five remaining undefeated teams in the country - Alabama, Oklahoma, Louisville, Boise State, and Georgia Tech.

In a major upset this past week, previously #2-ranked Ohio State was dealt its first loss of the season, at the hands of the Illinois Fighting Illini. The 34-31 loss at home was the first loss suffered under head coach Urban Meyer. OSU falls from #2 to #9 in the latest BCS rankings.

Making the biggest jump since last week is Florida, who comes in at #9 in this week's poll. Ranked #16 last week, the Gators took down previously-ranked #4 South Carolina in a 31-24 SEC dogfight. The Gators improve to 8-2 on the season.

The #2, #4, and #8 ranked teams in last week's poll all lost, and all fell in the polls significantly. This week, the teams on upset alert include #2 Oklahoma (traveling to take on #24 Kansas State), #16 Washington (on the road against #22 Oregon State), and #22 Missouri (squaring off against #25 Ole Miss).

Some tough losses in the past couple weeks, looking forward to seeing if you can turn it around against Temple and what the future holds for UConn football.

Yeah they were definitely tough games. Louisville is almost unstoppable, and SMU had a great aerial/ground combo that was really tough to stop. I should be able to bounce back against Temple, as they're not nearly as good as the previous two teams.

Game 10: Temple 28, Connecticut 10

Hoot Hoot
Temple Gives Reeling UCONN its 3rd Straight Loss

PHILADELPHIA, pa -- The Connecticut Huskies are going through some major struggles right now. For the third consecutive time, the Huskies have been defeated by the Temple Owls, giving the Huskies a record of 6-4 on the season. It is understandable that Connecticut would have a tough time against conference favorites Louisville and SMU, but Temple, really?

"I put this one on myself," said a disgruntled Chandler Whitmer. Whitmer, who had been so consistent all season, fell apart in the 3rd quarter. In the 3rd, Whitmer threw his second interception of the game, which led to a touchdown for the Owls to take the lead. Things unraveled from then on. "I was trying to force the issue when I shouldn't have. It was a close game. I shoulda kept feeding Lyle [McCombs]."

McCombs had another great day for UCONN, carrying the ball 21 times for 110 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, Whitmer and the Huskies offense ignored him, despite the close game.

Lyle McCombs eludes defenders and knocks down the pylon on his touchdown run

After the touchdown gave the Owls a 14-10 lead, Whitmer tried to regroup the Huskies. Unfortunately, his very next pass attempt was also intercepted -- his second in two attempts, and third in the game. The interception set up another touchdown for the Owls, this time a 6 yard touchdown pass from Kevin Newsome to Jalen Fitzpatrick,

Once again, Whitmer took the field, trying to get the Huskies out of a hole. And once again, his next pass attempt was intercepted. And once again, Newsome found Fitzpatrick in the end zone.

Jalen Fitzpatrick dives over a UCONN defender to score his second touchdown in under a minute

That spelled the end of the day for Whitmer. His final line was 11 completions on 19 attempts for 111 yards. The threw for no touchdowns and was intercepted a season-high four times. He had a quarterback rating of just 64.8.

Whitmer was replaced in the lineup by redshirt freshman Casey Cochran. Cochran, a Connecticut native and fan favorite, did his best to keep UCONN close. He helped sustain a long drive in the fourth quarter that ended at the one yard line after Deshon Foxx could not stretch over the end line on a 4th-down-and-goal play.

Head coach Paul Pasqualoni summed up Cochran's game: "Casey was good, real good. It's not easy to come into a game like that without taking first team reps. We're proud of him." When asked about any potential battle between Cochran and incumbent quarterback Whitmer, Pasqauloni was coy: "That's something that my staff and I will have to discuss. Chandler is a 2-year starter. It'll take a long discussion to replace him."

The loss drops the Huskies to 6-4 on the season, and 3-3 in conference play. They return home to The Rent to take on rival Rutgers next week. We'll have to stay tuned to see if we have a quarterback battle in the coming weeks. One thing is for sure, though: Pasqualoni will have a quicker hook on Whitmer, knowing that Cochran can perform against good competition.
