Great start to the season, and looking like you might be able to run away with the conference, or at least get to the conference championship in your first year, keep up the good work man.

UNLV's Hot Streak Brings In 4 More Commits

UNLV Rebels Recruiting - 2013
NAMEPOSCLASSHOMETOWNHTWTCALIBER

Michael TaylorDTHSTemple City, CA6'2254

Frank BaileyWRHSPittsburg, CA6'4202

LAS VEGAS, NV - The UNLV Rebels are on a 5 game winning streak and beat the Fresno Bulldogs last week, a game in which many had it heavily favoring the Bulldogs. With wins coming in plenty this year for the Rebels so far, coach Simon has also been bringing in recruits on the plenty. With these 4 new commits that brings his recruiting total up to 12 on the year, leaving roughly only 3 spots remaining for recruits. This new group that committed this week include 3 more players from California and the only recruit from Oregon for UNLV.

Joseph Fontenot, running back from Oregon, had teams recruiting him such as Oregon and Wisconsin, but chose UNLV. Fontenot, one of the best recruits that the Rebels were pursuing, will most likely become a change of pace back, being the bruiser type runner behind the two freshmen speed backs on the roster.

After Fontenot are two big receivers in JUCO player Jeremy Doty standing 6'6 and high schooler Frank Bailey standing at 6'4. These guys instantly become the tallest receivers on the roster and could provide coach Simon with some bigger possession guys, which the Rebels currently lack.

One of the biggest disappointments in the recruiting campaign has been the lack of interest from the defensive tackle position, which could lead to a cause for concern as UNLV's top 3 defensive tackles are graduation after the season. 1/3 of that group has been replaced though with the final recruit in this group, Michael Taylor. Taylor is a bit of an undersized defensive tackle, but has real good strength that has allowed him to plug holes in the middle this year in high school.

Thanks! It's entirely possible, but San Diego State is looking pretty tough this year so it'll be between us for our side of the MWC

Game Notes
-------------------
Even though the Nevada Wolfpack are having a terrible season with a 2-5 record, they are definitely a team that will most likely give UNLV fits. Cody Fajardo is the clear leader for a Nevada team that doesn't really throw the ball a whole lot, but rather runs a read option in which Fajardo usually rushes for a decent amount. This is exaclty the type of offense that gashes UNLV because of their lack of discipline on containment. They usually always buckle down on the running back, leaving huge holes for a quarterback, which will be dangerous with the dual threat Fajardo.

For UNLV, they're coming off of an impressive win against Fresno State, where the defense caused pressure on an elite quarterback and forced a turnover on him. Even though Nevada doesn't throw a whole lot, when they have Fajardo has made a lot of mistakes, which could be the key to this game. If UNLV can cause more of that pressure this game against Nevada and cause turnovers they might actually put up a good fight against the Wolfpack.

For Nevada, they'll have to commit solely to the read option game and let Fajardo do his magic. They should most likely limit the amount of passes he throws just to limit the mistakes made this game to as few as possible. This could be a turning point for both teams as Nevada could rebound their season to at least an ok season, while the Rebels could fall with a loss here.

Recruiting Notes
-----------------------
The Wolfpack might have extra motivation for this game as they are playing host to 14 recruits and might look to have a marquee game at home. Highlighting the group of recruits is 4-star recruits Damon Lockerty (#4 SS), out of Las Vegas, NV and Tyler Wilson (#13 TE) out of El Cajon, CA

Re: A Fresh Start: UNLV's Search for Success (NCAA '14)

Fajardo Proves To Be Too Much For UNLV, Wolpack Roll

LAS VEGAS, NV - All good things must come to an end and that was ever so present today in the Battle for Nevada. The UNLV Rebels came into the game on a 5 game win streak, while the Wolfpack were on a 4 game losing streak. One of the streaks had to come to an end today and unfortunately, it was the Rebels'.

Nevada won the coin toss and gave the ball to UNLV to start the game and promptly shut down the run game the Rebels were trying to establish. They then came out and on the first play of the game Fajardo would keep the ball and run 44 yards. That is when UNLV knew they were in for a handful. Nevada would continue to work it down field, but the Rebels would hold and force a field goal. The two teams would then go back and forth a little bit, but an untimely interception thrown by Troy Hawthorne would give Nevada the upper hand once again.

Now back with momentum, Nevada turned to their tailback, Don Jackson, and started feeding him the ball. Since UNLV was so worried about Fajardo, Jackson was easily able to slash the defense for big gains, including a touchdown from 17 yards out. The Rebels would gain some momentum though as they started feeding their own running back, Tim Cornett, and he would bring his team back into the game on a 1 yard run. Nevada wasn't about to let the Rebels go into the half with momentum though and so Fajardo would continue to run and brought his team within field goal range and the Wolfpack would go ahead by 6.

Coming out of the half neither team could manage the advantage as both quarterbacks would continue throwing interceptions. Tajh Hasson would pick off Fajardo on a short pass and try for the pick 6, but was caught after 53 yards. The Rebel offense couldn't make the big capitalization on the turnover though, only managing a field goal, but were back within 3.

Unfortunately for UNLV those would be the last 3 points that they would score on the day, as Fajardo and Jackson would combine for over 300 yards rushing on the day. Not only was Nevada's rush offense too much for UNLV to handle, but the pressure they were dialing up on defense rattled Hawthorne. Troy was sacked 6 times on the day and on a certain play was hit as he threw the ball and middle linebacker Jordan Dobrich would return it 23 yards for a touchdown. That was pretty much the nail in the coffin as the Rebels would be unable to come close to a comeback.
