FLORIDA STATE TOPS NATION AFTER TITLE WIN IN 2013
Florida State and Jamies Winston are odds on favourite to retain the national title in 2014
Florida State broke the SEC’s seven year hold on the national championship last season with an undefeated season that ended up with a win over Alabama in the national title again ending the Crimson Tides hope of a treble, not only that but Jameis Winston made it a college double for the Seminoles when the redshirt freshman took home the Heisman last season.
The Seminoles come into 2014 ranked as the top team in college football and for Jimbo Fisher another shot at the national title will mean doing it all again without both of his coordinators who were offered head coaching jobs off the back on the title win; offensive coordinator Lawrence Dorsey is now the head coach of Ohio and Jeremy Pruitt replaced Gary Patterson at TCU who ironically then took Pruitt’s old job with the Seminoles and none other than Lane Kiffin will be coaching the Seminoles offense in 2014. Jameis Winston’s chances at another successful season were helped in the offseason when the Seminoles lost just three key players on the offense, senior’s Bryan Stork (OC) and Kenny Shaw (WR) both graduated whilst junior Devonta Freeman (HB) declared early for the NFL draft, replacing Stork is another senior in Austin Barron with the drop off in talent only being minor if any at all. It will be on the defense where the Seminoles will find it tough this year after losing four defensive starters; Lamarcus Joyner (CB), Terrence Brooks (FS), Christian Jones (OLB) and Telvin Smith (OLB) all graduated or left for the NFL and the guy tabbed to take over Joyner this season sophomore Ronald Darby transferred away from Florida State to Marshall.
Alabama come into pre-season ranked #2nd in the nation which is fitting for Nick Saban’s men even though they lost to Florida State in the national title the season past but take into account it was the Crimson Tides third consecutive national title trip and fourth in five years. The Crimson Tide look like the best all round team on paper this season on both sides of the ball but if it comes down to special teams then the Crimson Tide will struggle, two freshman are charged with the task of potentially kicking the Crimson Tide to another national title and neither look all that special (on paper). It is also the first time in a long time where Nick Saban goes into spring with a quarterback battle on his hands all four of the quarterbacks on the Crimson Tide roster believe their good enough to start, senior Blake Sims comes in as the favourite but sophomore Alec Morris and redshirt freshman Cooper Bateman are not far behind in talent then there is four-star recruit out of Norman High School north David Cornwell whoever wins the job must be able to deal with the expectations of a state when it comes to winning.
The third team in the nation comes in the form of the LSU Tigers from the SEC, the Tigers stock hasn’t been this high for such a long time and the team enters the 2014 season with soaring expectations. Although many are pinning the Tigers game against the Crimson Tide on November 1st as the make or break point for the Tigers this season it could be before that in October when LSU travel to the returning Johnny Manziel and the Aggies in Kyle Field and should the Tigers come away from both games unscathed then who knows. The Tigers will pin their hopes on offense on a tripod of players made up from Heisman hopeful runningback Jeremy Hill and two senior receivers in Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry. Under center will be sophomore Anthony Jennings who will helped by a diesel powered offensive line. It will be along the defensive line where the Tigers get many opposing quarterback hot stepping in the pocket, defensive ends Danielle Hunter and Jermauria Rasco will pounce from the outside whilst Ego Ferguson will smash through the middle.

Braxton Miller returns for his senior season after believing he couldn’t leave without finishing of some “business” he felt was not complete. The Buckeyes finished last season 12-1 and another unbeaten season in the Leaders division and the Buckeyes defense recorded the most sacks in college football with 40, can I add that the defense lost just two starters to graduation. Defensive End Noah Spence led the team with 8 sacks as a sophomore and hes back again bigger, brighter added to Spence is the return of defensive tackle Michael Bennett who finished with 7 sacks last season and to cap it off Joey Bosa the true freshman who recorded 6 sacks may be the best of the bunch on that reason alone the Buckeyes are ranked #4 this season.
Closing out the top five are the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Mike Gundy’s men are going to struggle this season to hold down that spot although the team is good it may not be even the best in the Big XII behind the likes of Baylor and Oklahoma in 2014. Junior quarterback J.W. Walsh is the best player on offense and he will continue to shine this year but the lack of depth at runningback for the Cowboys may hurt this offense should starter Desmond Roland go down injured at any point, JUCO recruit Tyreek Hill will be able to break the field but at just 5-foot-9 and 185 he isn't going to be an every down back and true freshman Devon Thomas has redshirted so that leaves it up to sophomore speedback Rennie Childs to carry the load should he be called upon.
Jameis Winston returns as the pre-season favourite for the Heisman trophy and why not, he could be on the best team in college football in terms of dynamic downfield receivers and a ball busting offensive line that will open holes for him to run into when he’s called upon to do so. Following up Winston are three runningbacks in Melvin Gordon of Wisconsin, Ka’deem Carey of Arizona and Jeremy Hill of LSU then there is Teddy Bridgewater the quarterback out of Louisville who captured the nation with his play as a junior and now returning for a senior could be the best all round quarterback in college football and a dark horse for the Heisman in 2014, but he is in a new conference in the ACC and will have to compete one-to-one with Winston for the title in both conference and individual.
