In their previous match-up this season, UCLA took a 34-30 close victory. Surprisingly, many experts are picking Nebraska to win in this one, probably due to their high-octane offense. But with this being essentially a home game for the Bruins, the Huskers will need to overcome the odds and win, basically, on the road.
In Nebraska/UCLA III, it was Nebraska who finally got a win over the Bruins after losing to them earlier this year and last year. Senior Quarterback Taylor Martinez had an excellent final game as a Husker, throwing for 231 and a touchdown and running for 90 and a touchdown.
However, it was a play by Martinez's backup, Freshman Tommy Armstrong Jr., that proved to be the difference in the game. In the 3rd quarter, it looked as if Nebraska was going to attempt a 35-yard field goal on 4th and inches, but it was a fake. Armstrong, the holder on the play, rolled out of the pocket and threw a perfect lob pass to Sophomore tail back Imani Cross for the touchdown. The momentum changed hands, as the Huskers outscored UCLA 20-9 in the 4th quarter.
For 1st-year Nebraska head coach Wesley Darrellson, this is a HUGE win, especially for his first year in the program. Darrellson led a young Huskers team to a Big Ten title and a Rose Bowl trophy. Hopefully next season, he can take another step forward.
Nebraska Player of the Year: SR QB Taylor Martinez
Offensive Player of the Year: JR RB Ameer Abdullah
Defensive Player of the Year: JR DE Randy Gregory
Freshman of the Year: FR LB Michael Rose
What a year for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. After former Head Coach Bo Pelini resigned from the program, new Head Coach Wesley Darrellson stepped in and led the team to a Conference Title and a Rose Bowl victory. Sure, there was an ugly loss against Michigan, and a couple of losses that shouldn't have happened, but the team overcame the odds and closed the season on a 5-game winning streak.
