Despite not even appearing in their conference championship game, Ole Miss has earned the right to appear in the 2016 BCS National Championship Game against #1 Ohio State. With Iowa's loss in the Big Ten Championship Game along with Florida State's defeat in the ACC Championship Game, Ole Miss jumped from #4 to #2 in the BCS Polls. Oregon jumped from #6 to #3, and has the same .989 BCS score as Ole Miss despite the Ducks having a conference championship to add to their resume.
In fact, the team that won the SEC Championship - Georgia - has not one, but two SEC teams above them in the BCS Rankings. With Ole Miss heading for a shot for the title, Texas A&M is sitting at #4 in the BCS polls and almost knocked the Bulldogs out of a BCS bowl altogether. Thanks to the SEC champion having an automatic bid to the Sugar Bowl, Georgia will take their #5 ranking against American champion #18 USF.
"We may not always agree with the decisions made, but we just have to go out and play the game on our schedule and show why we are deserving of being in a national title game." said Georgia head coach Mike Richt. "By no means are we going to overlook our opponent, we want to end the year off strong just like everybody else."
Some coaches were a little less nice with their words.
"I don't see how the committee thought they were more deserving." said Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich. "I hope they figure out a way to get a college playoff soon, because we deserve our shot at a National Title. No disrespect I'm sure Ole Miss had a good season, but two losses and they didn't even play in the conference championship? Our resume and our record is better hands down. Put us on the field and we beat them."
Will a College Football Playoff appear on the horizon? Talks of such have constantly been brought up in the last few years but for the most part that's all it has been. If there was such a playoff this year, you'd have to imagine Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oregon, and Georgia would have been the frontrunners.
