Really enjoyed your thread. I was hoping to do a Jets dynasty as well, as I am a Jet fan( I know, tough.) But just signing up, I can't create new threads yet Oh well maybe in due time I'll be able to start one. I'll be looking forward to see your progress, and maybe even lift the Lombardi trophy, even if it's only in Madden, lol!
Thanks for checking in.
You'll be able to start a thread after been around long enough and make that secret number of posts.
With Matt Schaub nuring a sore elbow in his throwing arm Raiders rookie QB Derek Carr makes his NFL starting debut against the Jets on opening day. Gang Green would like to give him David Carr Syndrome, but with Dee Milliner out with an ankle injury, Carr's chances of winning his first game are enhanced. If Carr falters, Schaub, who was a full participant in practice during the week, is available for relief.
Despite giving up 170 rushing yards, turning the ball over four times while not getting a takeaway, scoring one touchdown in five regulation trips to the red zone, and spotting the visiting Oakland Raiders a 14-3 lead, the New York Jets were able to scrape out a 17-14 overtime victory in their 2014 season opener. They did it in part by harrying rookie quarterback Derek Carr into a completion percentage of less that 50% while sacking him 7 times- 4 by 2011 first round pick Muhammad Wilkerson.
After both teams scored the first time they had the ball, the score was still 7-3 late in the second quarter when a roughing the passer call on Oakland’s Justin Tuck put the Jets in the red zone. But Geno Smith was shaken up when he was sacked on the next play by a blitzing Tyvon Branch. It was a development that might have pleased Michael Vick supporters, but on his first play as a Jet, Vick threw off-balance while evading a sack by Lamarr Woodley and was intercepted by rookie linebacker Khalil Mack at the Raider 4. Darren McFadden capped the ensuing 94 yard drive with his second touchdown run of the day. Saalim Hakim returned the kickoff to the Oakland 43 , and the Jets reached the 14 with 10 seconds left before the break- time for a shot at the end zone before having to settle for a field goal- but Geno was picked off by Keith McGill, who returned his theft to the New York 29. Fortunately time expired and the Raiders were unable to try to convert the turnover into three points.
In the first series of the second half, a 37 yard reception by Greg Salas put the ball at the Raider 14, but then after runs of 4 and minus 3 yards by Chris Johnson, Geno was sacked by McGill and the Jets ended up doing nothing more than cutting their deficit to 14-6. Nick Folk’s three-pointer was the only score of the third quarter. A critical moment of the game came with 10:50 left in the 4th quarter, when the Jets were in a 4th and 4 at the Oakland 43 and Sexy Rexy decided to roll the dice. Geno’s completion to Jeremy Kerley converted, but the ball squirted loose when Kerley was tackled and it was collected by Charles Woodson. After a booth review, however, the Jets retained possession. By the time they reached a 4th and goal at the 3, it was too late for another field goal to be of any value, and the Jets gambled again. The payoff was Geno’s touchdown toss to second year tight end Zach Sudfeld, followed by a tying two-point catch by rookie second round pick Jace Amaro. Holding calls on consecutive plays put the Raiders in a 1st and 28 that became a 3rd and 23. Carr’s completion to David Ausberry picked up about 22 and 2/3 yards, and the Raiders punted- with Marquette King’s coffin corner kick going out of bounds at the 5. There would be no 95 yard drive- Johnson dug the Jets out with a 15 yard run, and the Jets made it out to their 39, but they punted from there. The Raiders had the ball at their 13 with 59 seconds left, but a false start flag drawn by Donald Penn pushed them back to the 8. The Raiders did move the sticks, but another false start and sack by corner Darrin Walls put them in a 2nd and 21 at 00:22. A sack by Quinton Coples made it 3rd and 32, and the teams allowed the clock to run down to bring on overtime.
After the Jets won the overtime coin toss, a pair of three and outs that included Wilkerson’s 4th sack put the Jets at their 49 after the exchange of punts. Johnson got a yard before a 44 yard catch and run by tight end Jeff Cumberland advanced the ball all the way down to the 6, and in came Folk to boot the game-winner.
